My guess is that he met with these men before hand and they had it all planned out. The big secret here is that it is easy to fool people from the tv.
some observations: derren shook hands with the last subject. He also had him lie differently (with merely thinking the statements and the lie and not say them vocally). Why? The third subject was the most timid. His body language (arm barriers and facial expressions) communicated that he felt frightened or possibly threatened by Derren. I have noticed these choices that Derren makes...i wrote about more of this in my book.
he changes the routine to suit a person's (in this case, lack of) rapport. And you can see in the clip, the previously timid, reluctant, possibly frightened or intimidated subject is genuinely awed by Derren's ability. Also all three salesmen lied about the engine, so guessing the engine as a lie (after the first two lied about the engine) is not too flabbergasting when you scrutinize it, but initially at face value, it seems nothing other than pure mind-reading!
I can understand that. I think that you need somehow practicing and also being natural in fake.. And finally I don't know pretty much but I can tell that those people are definitively instinctive people who love to study and guess things, especially human reactions. You can do almost the same things on the Internet. But you have to 'get used' to one's reactions if you wanna be sure you're right about him/her. I know it's hard to believe, but with confidence that's not that hard. ~Thanks^^"~
For the last guy, my guess is that the trick was eye contact. The first one after he says okay, the eyes continue at the car. The second and third one he looks at Derren after each.
first guy raised eyebrow when he lied , last guy did not nod head in yes fashion when he lied . i guess if they lie once there is one noticeable difference in the three responses .
from what i saw (the third guy) the only thing that i saw that he did differently is that when he said the first fact (which ended as the lie) he didn't look at derren in the eyes.
the end of the vid cuts out but theres actually a 4th vehicle which is a camper van and they bundle derren into the back of it and take his arse virginity.
Where do you learn this stuff. I have a buddy who told me he learned this working for anti-terrorist organization. But I mean for those of us without military background, where can you go and genuinely learn this stuff?
He begins with dominating them with cameras and tell me your name first to shake hands, I bet you derren Id turn you tomato red if you tried your stunts on me because I know what you gona do before you do it.
@Wisdombluetooth no, you dont. we all use techniques like this every day. only we cannot do it consciously. derren can, but while we often just have a hunch or strange feeling about sth, he learned how to consciously examine.
@seinfeld548 Indeed, they are looking stupid clicking on a 3 minute video expecting to come out with what is taught in books of several hundred pages lol
If someone ever got that close to me and started touching me,I would be like "get the fuck away from me!" People actually get distracted by this,& let people get in their face. One person bad,but if any group came up to me,I would just walk away.
@bicepsca Learn NLP, neuro linguistic programming if you want to read people. Person 1: Nods forcefully and excessively, Person 2: Interjects with urgency, Person 3, Looks straight ahead when lying, and looks at Derren when telling the truth.
@bicepsca The lesson is called pay attention. The method of instruction is called repetition. When you watch this video enough times you will learn what to look for. ;-)
I'll tell you who's the biggest liar among those guys... It's Derren!

@AirSandFire Actually, none of it is staged. Darren Brown has a few publications on some of his methods. They're all sound methods.

I was right on point with each lie as well but he knocked it out the park on that last one by being able to specify what the guy was thinking.
