Which basically means that Spartans killed in battle live on in humanity as a whole.

Without Noble 6, there would be no Cortana and thus, the Chief would likely not have saved humanity, he died but his death kinda directly resulted in the survival of the human race. So he didn't really die in battle, he gave his life to the people he saved.

Just like the forerunners, who died when they used the Halos for us

He faces almost certain death w/o hesitation, and when it's over, he just says, "it's finished" then goes to sleep so that he can one day return to duty.

The only action in all of John's life as a Spartan that isn't about him fighting for humanity, is when he says "wake me... when you need me."

It's pretty touching in a subtle way.

Notice how the last sub-titled section of the last mission was "Full Circle"? It indeed was a full circle from the first mission of the first game. They returned the original ring and finished things once and for all, and the Chief returned to cryo sleep (he woke up from cryo sleep in the beginning of the first game).
