There are innunmerous Maximuses throughout the Roman era however, the russel crowe character seems to be a compilation of a real roman general and a real roman gladiator. Most of the important characters existed at some point in time, but in some cases, years apart. The setting and culture is historically accurate though.

Do it really matter in the end? It's a sick movie!

mongolia was bigger and Ghengis Khan a strategic genuis but although they controlled imense land mass, they couldn't control it haha. If anything it was probably the best, for starters it was the first to ban slavery, it introduced Education and Health Care etc if anything it is a story of contradiction.
