  • The way he speaks, he seems even smarter than Jon Stewart

  • I love this! He's great in character, but even better (if that was humanly possible) out of character.

  • I have sooooooooooooooooooooo much love and respect for this man.

  • charlie rose is so undervalued. He produces the DEFINITION of interview.

  • holy shit.

  • at the beginning of the video, when he answers charlie saying "Yes I did"....his voice is deep....very sexy. He is such a great man.

I wonder how old his oldest sibling is? must be like a 20 year difference. Just wondering.

  • God he looks so much like Robert Downey Jr.

  • I dont think schmoozes is an appropriate word for discussing such a tragedy

  • Stephen Colbert is my role-model.

    Laughter will always trump tragedy.

  • stop posting that everywhere columbus....colbert steamrolls ppl on his show's interviews...the best ones are usually those where the person doesnt let him just have his way...

  • @hippossa That is when he is IN character, When he is out of character, He is always nice and respectful. But on his show, His interviews are always pretty crazy. He does that to everybody he interviews, Everybody knows what to expect when they go on the Colbert Report. By the way, Stephen always gets his way. Even when he is on Papa Bear's Show. :)

  • This guy interrupts Stephen WAY too much! Colbert very rarely does interviews out of character, I just wish there were somebody else doing this interview. We want to know more about Stephen....Not what he thinks about Stephen. He needs to ask the question and then shut up. But anyway i think Stephen is entertaining whether he is in character or not. And i think he's a great person. I'm a proud member of The Colbert Nation. Thumbs Up If You Are Too!!

  • @columbusbobby23 I so did not mean to do a thumbs down. Thumbs up all the way!

  • What this proves, among many things, is that art cannot be taught. You have to have an inclination to be really good or great, or flat out excellent. You're just born with it.Experience doesn't hurt at all, but, hey.

  • How can anyone dislike this video?! They must be Republicans that thought he was like them in real life.

  • I love this entire interview. He's so fucking great.

  • he is intelligent and funny, to top it all off, he;s incredibly fucking hot and handsome. Just a dreamboat.

  • Sorta looks like Bob Saget

  • @dak879 Once when I was in the hospital, doped up on morphine, I was watching Full House, and I was all "MOM! STEPHEN COLBERT IS DANNY!"

    Drugs are bad, bro.

  • People who are accomplished comedians have suffered immensely at some point in their life. For example, Jim Carry, Tim Allen, George Carlin, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, and Robin Williams, all suffered from depression and had very tough lives in their younger years. Isn't that weird?

  • @kirikakirikakirika

don't forget greg giraldo. he was going through tough times until the end. R.I.P. Greg Giraldo.

  • @kirikakirikakirika very true and I see it as evidence that through tragedy laughter is always prevalent and a healing factor

  • he's a great guy

  • I adore this interview, every last bit of it. Just watching it can cheer me up. Stephen is a truly wonderful person when he's not being "Stephen Colbert."

  • Fascinating to see him out of character speaking so personally. Seems like a great guy.

  • I love Stephen Colbert

  • This is the most intelligent conversation I've ever seen on television.

  • 4 people had their dads die in plane crashes and never became famous

  • ive been watchin him since he was on "strangers with candy"

  • "You need threats to have discipline, and nothing seemed threatening to me" - Stephen Colbert

  • Stephen you're the real hero

  • He looks like Bob Saget in this interview.....lol

  • He is just amazing

  • It amazes how Colbert remains joyful even after his parents died.

That's the joy God has given to Him to coup with his loss.

  • I just want to curl up in his English professor(esque) jacket and sleep like a newborn baby.

  • thats fucked up what happened to his fam

  • i love him so the most.

  • STILL AMAZING!!

  • such a great man.

  • its so sad that he had family died in a plane crash

  • poor man. he just seems so warmhearted, its horrible that he had to go through something like that.

  • it is. But as he hasn't fully discounted. It probably had part to do with shaping the great man that he is today.

  • I've never seen this side of Colbert, what an incredible guy. He is a legend of our time.

  • this is the second exposure/look i've had of this guy. I'll be definitely checking him out more.

  • this is great to see him out of character like this

  • You can't "shmooz about family deaths" you can talk but not "schmooz"...

  • you can do anything you want.

  • It truly is incredible to see such a great person like Stephen Colbert do an interview like this. The real Stephen Colbert, not the character. He really is a brilliant man. Thank you for posting these! What are these clips from, anyway?

  • The Show is Charlie Rose.

  • Surrendered his need for importance? He has achieved extreme importance... HE LEADS AN INTERNET ARMADA!!! (and owns his own internet nation)

  • Maybe that's a lesson we can all learn.

I've never seen the reason call celebrities...celebrities. My favorite heroes and people aren't wildly known like that, don't have a lot of power, and aren't always hounded by paparazzi.

Paparzzi, the most stupid job possibly ever.

Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Douglas Adams, Ricky Gervais, Lewis Black...

    I like comedians too much.

"I should be toasting to my absent friends

    rather than these dead comedians."

  • i love him

  • i think mesquissto means "fucken things that he had to go through sucks" mebz. chillll.

  • what other things would i be talking about?

    plus i was quoting billO

    colbert is a hero

  • dunno, but you got 6 negative votes :S

  • Has anyone heard of the word he uses at 6:08? Is it like the spanish word for easy, fácil?

  • no, it's English, 'facile'

  • And that's from French (latin based), meaning easy.

    Web def:

    1) arrived at without due care or effort; lacking depth;

"too facile a solution for so complex a problem"

    2) performing adroitly and without effort; "a facile hand"

    -so same thing :)

  • wat does it mean

  • By far the most intelligent , neutral comment thread I have ever seen on YouTube.

  • Watching this video made me fall about 10x more in love with him than I already was. What a tragedy... BTW, I knew he was a sci-fi and fantasy fan and a D&D player but I didn't know he had the same attitudes towards reading and homework as I do.

Someone once said "life is a comedy for those who think an a tragedy for those who feel," and Stephen, obviously very brilliant, went with the first option :)

  • Really like his explanation for why he did comedy.

  • cover it accurately is to laugh at it. He's overcome a tremendous amount of obstacles in his upbringing. He's obviously down to earth, kind, caring, charismatic, witty, and just generally an amazing person. Stewart/Colbert 2012. Nuf' said.

  • Steven Colbert is a godsend to this country, and I say that with all my religious impiety. Can you imagine how bleak our political landscape would be if we didn't have intelligent men like Stewart and Colbert keeping our elected officials honest; and make no mistake, for all of the talk about integrity and honesty from the mainstream media, Colbert and Stewart are the only two providing candid coverage of current affairs, because our political process has gotten so ridiculous, the only way to

  • I want to see him be Hamlet! Go, Stephen! Do it! Share the misery! Man, how good that would be!

  • God, I love him. He is just...amazing doesn't even begin to cover it.

  • It's so horrible what happend with his family... It really makes me sad.. I could never imagene, how it must be. Omg, just tragic:( i don't know what to say about it, cause it's to horrible for me to rap my mind around. I just hope, everyone in his family is well now.( they best they can be, considering what happemd) Colbert seems like the nicest guy. Really good person. and obviosly funny aswell.

  • His dad did some amazing things for the civil rights movement. Look him up.

  • Aw, that was sad...

I can't imagine such loss, and at such a young age as well.

  • wierd.. i like normal steve just as much if not more.. he's funny but very very well spoken and has great stories... such a shame that happened to him.. thank god he's been blessed with such humor.. i'm sure it was helpful

  • i interned for Daily show in 04-05.. got to do a small sketch w/Cobert (playing the intern)... amazing experience there

i will say (b/c i've posted it elsewhere) that Colbert is a funny, but not over the top, absolutely normal, kind, family oriented guy

  • can you put the video clip of you and colbert up?

I would love to see the link

  • wow i never thought of that.. well it's vhs so gotta do a couple conversions here and hope the quality stays intact.. but yeah.. it's very short.. but it was definitely icing on the cake for that internship

  • What a terrible thing to have happened to him and his family. Poor Stephen :(

  • Stephen Colbert is just amazing. Intelligent, funny, charming, nice, and all into fantasy, science fiction, and D&D. He's my idol.

  • What is... what is with this 'shmoozes' descriptor? I don't get it.

  • i think 'shmooze' means to chit-chat? the poster of the video can correct me if i'm wrong.

  • Intelligent, witty, funny, influential, eccentric, imaginative, fresh, and charming.

    I could go on...

  • Stephen Colbert is so hot ... beyond George Clooney hot.

  • Dude, that's a severe understatement!

  • @BonnieBecnel and that is hard to do my friend :)

  • Yup, I love him even more after this interview. Sigh. <3

  • I love you Man!!! you are awesome :)

  • simply amazing.

  • This interview makes me love Colbert even more. Fantastic stuff.

  • pt 3 is here

  • He is great both as the character and as himself.

  • This is the best part of this interview. Essential Colbert.

  • I just love him out of character. He seems like a really sweet and genuine person.

  • @jcnsync1 The great thing about him is how even without seeing him out of character you can kinda tell what a good person he is, but I totally agree I love seeing interviews of him out of character. He's just such a nice guy.

  • @jcnsync1 He really is a cool and nice person. He is my teachers brother :D

  • lol his whale sound is awesome!

  • Are there any more youtube videos where he is out of character?

  • phil ken sebben on harvey birdman attorney at law lol thats a good one

  • That whale gag story's great. Making the setup, the punchline worked better.

  • funny shit funny shit

  • Like Nightworks said, you can watch the entire interview by going over to the Charlie Rose website and typing "Stephen Colbert" in the search engine. I can also give you the link to the page if you'd like. Just send me a message, and I'd be glad to :)

  • I love the "humorocracy" thing. That's exactly how my family is, too. xD

  • Oh my god, I'm in love!

  • he has an elf ear!!!!!! LOL

  • aww he is sensitive about his elf ear. lol

  • He's deaf in that ear (the right) -- childhood tumor.

  • whats the name of the show? i'd love to see the whole thing in one sequence

  • Charlie Rose shown on PBS

    best interviews around

  • If you search for "Colbert Charlie Rose" in google video you can see the whole show. ^^

  • "Yes I DIIID" Haha, I love how he said that. XD

And I'd also love to see Stephen do Ballet.. x3

  • There's all sorts of clips and videos of him dancing in general.

    The man's hips are mesmerizing...

  • What a wonderful man!

  • here is a very real person.

  • This entire interview is great. Colbert seems like such a genuine guy.

  • This is so sad... Poor guy - and to get over that and go on to become such an incredibly humourous person. Ta 4 posting

  • i like the real stephen colbert much more than the actor he plays on the report

  • same here

  • i agree. he seems like such a patient, good guy.

  • I completely agree. He's so much more agreeable and you feel like you can actually sit and talk with him.

  • Charlie Rose, stop interrupting!

  • dude, you got -32

    haha

  • thats because people are stupid and dont see that my comment was NOT about stephen colbert but that charlie rose dude, my comment was a reply to sundnick who has +4 and mine -33 by now, cuz people think my comment is about stephen colbert. its all youtube fault by putting the comments in a missed up order

  • no one thinks your comment is about colbert, I guess 33 people are fans of charlie rose

  • maybe

  • lol, what a mystery.

  • Wow his dad and two brothers, poor guy.

  • this is very touching and it's nice to hear the ambitions and motives behind his career in comedy. I come from a very similiar family, who also value comedy a lot... Thanks for the upload.

  • This made me cry.

  • Do you know how long the whole interview is, and where I can find it? (or if you can post it?) Btw THANK YOU SOOOO much for posting these? I love stephen like no other, and these totally made my day!!

  • I'm guessing the video is about an half hour long - try google video.

    thanks for uploading btw!

  • Yes - I also worship the ground he walks on... and when he and Jon get together it is like Martin and Lewis - it's that classic... Hey, did you all know there's finally a 'best of" DVD of stuff from the Colbert Report coming out later this fall?? I will so buy it - too bad it's only going to be one disc...

  • are you serious?!! really?!! ::jumps up and down and knocks things over:: now if only they would do that for the Daily Show! damn youtube for taking all those stephen clips down, seriously, I wept. but thanks for telling me about the dvd, I'll be sure to keep an eye out for it!
