My gf s from Sisaket Province too. Close to Uthumphon Phisai, the last train station before Sisaket city. I have been there 3 times. Very different life as from Bangkok. It seem like her family is rice farmer, mine also. Amazing. Nice video, wish u the best :)

I'm going to Sisaket in May to visit my girlfriends family. Thank you for posting this video- gives me an idea of what's in store for me. Their family are farmers, and rather poor. Could you possibly tell me how much of a "donation" is expected in those parts? I was told by my girlfriend "up to you what you want to give". I don't suppose 200 baht will do, so maybe you can shed some light on it. Either way, congrats on your engagement.

The amount for the family is a tricky one.

The main thing when u get engaged is the gold necklace and gold engagement ring, to show that you have the "monetary power" to support your future wife and/or family ;) At this time I gave about 20000bahts cash, a gold necklace worth about 14000bahts, and the ring worth about 3000bahts. But this is very subjective and varies from family to family etc. Communication with ur girlfriend is key :)

For the engagement, it was a pretty relaxed ceremony, with usually just family and close friends attending, but of course it can also be the whole village is there, depending on how popular or wealthy the local family is. Traditions vary a great deal from village to village so hard to say. I had a blast, really cozy and good atmosphere.

@tarestyles : The gold necklace and gold engagement ring is standard, also usual to give a certain sum of money to the family; the higher the amount the better and as to not lose face it should be maybe discussed with your future spouse and family. Being a scheptical farang I made quite the minimum "donation" but like I said, our case was very relaxed and there were no problems ;) Now the actual wedding is alot more elaborate... Hopefully I can one day get around to making a real video of that.

Thanks for the reply. Every time I ask my Girl for a solid number she just says "up to you". Oi vay! I told her that instead of a dowry, I will just send her mom and dad money every month if she comes to my country to help support them and then maybe they can finally get a hot water heater for the shower. Such a simple life compared to my city of Los Angeles. I envy it completely.

I wish I could speak Thai, but my vocab is still limited to like 30 words/expressions... Very big Thai community in LA by the way, you should check out Thai town if you haven't already.
