If the priority is vengeance, then lock the fuckers up and throw away the key! 10 years is a large chunk of life. The US has extreme sentences in many cases, and having the world's highest imprisonment rate still doesn't make it especially safe. Just politicians acting "tough on crime" in the only way their small minds can devise.

Absolute hogwash. There are currently half a dozen court-related shows on American television (including a dedicated court tv channel), and at least that many prison-related shows. Having lived in Germany for many years, I can say with certainty that country has nothing similar in numbers or depth. Actually, when there are such shows on German television, they're most often focused on the USA in a critical manner. Like you, Germans seemingly love to criticize the USA.

In the 80s and later there has been a set-back, neo-conservatism or whatever, but since America is a modern, western country in many ways they will eventually mature, develop like other modern countries and get rid of things like the medieval punishment and so on. Become more european like, more modern and liberal again. Incararating teenagers for life is medieval or Saudi-Arabia like. That's it.: )

Pete Wilson administration, the majority of people seem to have been conned into voting for the 3 strikes law, who did not really understand it's actual power. Offenders comitting petty crimes would be convicted for 25 years to life in prison. You do know that the 3 strikes law in California is draconian, don't you?

Bei Mord liegt es in den USA bei 25 Jahren bis lebenslang, es hätte also gerechtfertigterweise auch 25 Jahre sein können, was zweifelsfrei für deutsche Gewohnheiten sehr hoch ist. Allerdings halte ich max. 10 Jahre als Jugendstrafmaß und max. 25 Jahre (evtl. plus sog. Sicherheitsverwahrung) für unterdimensioniert.

Prison for her is wrong. In Sweden she would automatically be turned over to the social services and serve a sentence of about 4 years at an institution for juveniles.

Hintergründe und Entwicklungen, wie es zu dieser Tat gekommen ist, werden völlig außen vor gelassen. Es fehlt jede Differenzierung. Menschen wie Courtney Schulhoff gehört mein ganzes Mitgefühl, auch wenn ich die Tat natürlich keineswegs gut heiße. Aber eine derartige Strafe ist maßlos überzogen und tritt die Menschenwürde mit Füßen.
