Fighting is part of the game Period. No If's and's or butt's.... Sometimes bad things happen and every player that is willing to drop the gloves knows and accepts the consequences. I agree with timmyboy1970 about the fact that it didn't need to happen right from puck drop, but like others have said, its raw emotion and the majority of people that watch hockey enjoys what fisticuffs can do to electrify an arena. Props to Westgarth for that nasty uppercut / haymaker combo x2 to end the fight.

I don't mind the occasional battle in the heat of the moment but when a couple of guys square off as soon as the puck drops it loses any credibility that is 'part' of the game. No, thats absolutely opposite of what it is. Obviously you don't play hockey. No one fights to make themselves some sort of fighting all star. They do it because almost everytime you start a fight, it pumps up your teams momentum, and many teams thrive off that, hence the reason the Minnesota Wild have Derek Boogaard, a 6'9" former semi-pro boxer. He's a hitter, a playmaker, and a momentum winner.

These guys dropped the gloves at the start of the game and that has absolutely nothing to do with the momentum because there isn't any yet. It's just a couple of guys that want to pound on each other because they enjoy fighting.
