but St nicolas origanlly came from "TURKEY" and then people decided to move Father christamas somewhere that is Lapland. if you people are looking at this comment "FATHER CHRISTMAS IS FROM TURKEY NOT LAPLAND"
1. I'm from Austria and I've never heard a Turkey being called an Indian (or Inder which would be the German word).
2. Alan DOES look like quite a few St. Sebastian depictions, it's the wavy hair and the friendly boyish face, but I doubt it was the Mantegna one he saw. (the painting is in Paris)
@Singsonggirl Surely it's a bit of a non-point to say "I'm from this particular place and I've never heard of such-and-such", because that's the whole point of QI! A lot of the facts are about England, where I'm from, and I've never heard of half the stuff Stephen goes on about. It does sound like bollocks a lot of the time but that's what's good about the programme.
Our modern ideas of Santa Claus -- a fat, jolly man in a red suit, with flying reindeer, coming down the chimney, etc. all comes from the poem "The Night Before Christmas," aka "A Visit From St. Nicholas," first published anonymously in 1823 and usually attributed to Clement Clarke Moore. The first image of this incarnation of St. Nicholas is an illustration of the poem by Thomas Nast, the famous political cartoonist who also created the image of Uncle Sam.
St Bartholomew, who @polothinking and @loveandkaos point out does not look like Alan-- where he's from is unknown, as is what he did, how he died, even where he preached. But he was an apostle and tradition says he was flayed alive.
St Sebastian, now, was a Roman guard who converted the jailors and family of some other martyrs. He was shot full of arrows for betraying the Emperor. He's patron of soldiers and athletes.
...funnily enough, he's also called the patron saint of homosexuality XD
7:26 I love how Stephen blurts out Merry Christmas and only then gets the joke.
