He served in Polish 1st Kosciuszko Infantry Division and he fought right from its very first battle of lenino till the last very bloody and horryfying battle of Berlin. Well, Ivan Kozhedub shot down 62 german planes, Pokryshkin 59. Guljaev 52, Rechkalov 57, so that is 240 planes just between 4 top soviet pilots. There is also an official list of about 50 more russian pilots having between 50 to 20 air wins. And there are hundreds under 10 air wins.

@bigrobcanuck Yes, far more Poles were executed, but then there were 3+ million Jews in Poland and only 350,000 Jews in France, so one would expect that the 1/10th as many French cases as Polish of the behaviour of gentile intervention were the same. The French collaboration was institutional (police) and limited to detection, arrest and transport, whereas in Poland the collaboration was active hunting, murdering and concentration camp participation work.
So the French action was merely "detection, arrest and transport", which is tantamount to murder as everyone knows where those transports went.
Claiming Poles were guilty of murder because they worked in concentration camps is a bit silly. If not Poles working in the camps which were in Poland then who else? By the same definition then the Jews would be guilty of murder themselves as many kapos in the camps were Jews.
Once in the camp it was work or die... some choice.
@bigrobcanuck You know Bigrob, theres is always the "I was ordered to do this" problem. The simple and UTTERLY HORRIFYING fact is that at Auschwitz there were never more that 100 SS men about. Most of the killing WAS done by the kapo's. The Israeli dealt with that as a legal matter. But what choice did these men have? Were they morally responsible? So what choice did he SS have when doing in Auschwitz as ordered? Saying "no" wasn't an option there either.
Ordered to do something and having a gun at your head... not quite the same. There may have been only hundreds of SS in the camp at any one time but there were many thousands nearby. As for choice, those in the SS enlisted, the cream of the crop.

The evidence and records show usually 60 TO 80 ON DUTY AT ANY TIME, AND THESE GUYS SORTED AND GUARDED. and NO major numbers of thousands nearby!. That's what I found so astonishing about it all. The main administration was for the work groups that laboured in the huge industrial complex built there because it was out of bomber range. The killing was actually a realively small part of the whole operation.
As for 60 to 80 on duty, it doesn't matter if it was half that. After all, who had the weapons and the power of life and death over every living thing within and close to the camps?

There was a hospital for those that needed care. There was the adjunct of the famous medical experimentation, no different than a experimenting on monkeys except these weren't monkeys. But while I'm not so deep into this subject I've come to most horrible view of it, namely the Hannah Arendt point of view. Ordinary people did as they were told, whether you were part of the SS administration, part of the senior capos who kept order or even the victim being led to death, or threw the zyklon. it just became part of "everyday". To those who understand German the Frankfurt trials are ghastly.

The basic hypothesis is that the Jews in Poland worked with and staffed the NKVD in the Soviet takeover of eastern Poland and the rage of the Polish caused them to commit massacres of Jews. The IPN admits the massacres, dozens of cases. Himmler used the defecting NKVD-hating Polish units. Stretch? Ask IPN.

If 720 polish soldiers fought with swords bows and arrows and arrows or not, germany now is the paymaster for all european countrys when the economic weather gets rough and you should be thankful because of that. Sorry but you got that wrong. Nazi Germany threw almost all its fighting force against Poland, leaving only a small defensive force just in case the French grew a pair. The end result was inevitable unless the British and French actually did what they were supposed to and attacked Germany.
You are correct though in that other than Japan, Germany was the only other nation prepared for full scale war.

He served in Polish 1st Kosciuszko Infantry Division and he fought right from its very first battle of lenino till the last very bloody and horryfying battle of Berlin. Thanks for the video - My grandfather ( Ludwik Wiktorski ) Polish soldier fought for Polska in WW2. He was a very brave soldier and managed to survive the war. After the war in had to live in Scotland as Churchill let the Russians take Poland. The Polish fought for our freedom and look how they got re-payed. My grandfather married had Children. Sometime during the movie it says that Polish aviator shot down 200 german planes, and says it was 12% of all german Air force.
Well, Ivan Kozhedub shot down 62 german planes, Pokryshkin 59. Guljaev 52, Rechkalov 57, so that is 240 planes just between 4 top soviet pilots. There is also an official list of about 50 more russian pilots having between 50 to 20 air wins. And there are hundreds under 10 air wins.
Check your math.

As was noted, many Poles (far more than in other conquered countries) were executed for trying to save Jewish friends. That some Poles collaborated is fact as bigots can be found everywhere but your claim is a bit more than a stretch.
Polish tanks were good, as were infantry weapons but lets not forget the actual quantities each side possessed.

@bigrobcanuck Yes, far more Poles were executed, but then there were 3+ million Jews in Poland and only 350,000 Jews in France, so one would expect that the 1/10th as many French cases as Polish of the behaviour of gentile intervention were the same. The French collaboration was institutional (police) and limited to detection, arrest and transport, whereas in Poland the collaboration was active hunting, murdering and concentration camp participation work.

So the French action was merely "detection, arrest and transport", which is tantamount to murder as everyone knows where those transports went.
Claiming Poles were guilty of murder because they worked in concentration camps is a bit silly. If not Poles working in the camps which were in Poland then who else? By the same definition then the Jews would be guilty of murder themselves as many kapos in the camps were Jews.
Once in the camp it was work or die... some choice.

Most of the killing WAS done by the kapo's. The Israeli dealt with that as a legal matter. But what choice did these men have? Were they morally responsible? So what choice did he SS have when doing in Auschwitz as ordered? Saying "no" wasn't an option there either.

Ordered to do something and having a gun at your head... not quite the same. There may have been only hundreds of SS in the camp at any one time but there were many thousands nearby. As for choice, those in the SS enlisted, the cream of the crop.

The evidence and records show usually 60 TO 80 ON DUTY AT ANY TIME, AND THESE GUYS SORTED AND GUARDED. and NO major numbers of thousands nearby!. That's what I found so astonishing about it all. The main administration was for the work groups that laboured in the huge industrial complex built there because it was out of bomber range. The killing was actually a realively small part of the whole operation.

The SS guard garrison including all adiminitstration of the entire system of camps in the area, including handling the huge industrial complex built there numbered about 2,950 with an expansion only when the Majdanek camp was closed and when additional staff was brought in for its evacuation. The total number of individual SS registrants who ever worked there numbered less than 7,900. (source: Yisrael Gutman)

@bigrobcanuck Its surreal to me, but somewhat like a stockyard operation. Even most of the paperwork was done by camp inmates given the assignments, and there was no shortage of that. There was a hospital for those that needed care. There was the adjunct of the famous medical experimentation, no different than a experimenting on monkeys except these weren't monkeys. It wasn't done deliberately for cruelty. It had a purpose. Cruelty in the name of science. I find that whole thing so surreal

@bigrobcanuck True, and i don't find any of it "funny". Dr. Mengele was working on specific, purpose driven experiments with INMATES as assistants (Did you know that?) Jewish doctors keeping his notes. Many many testimonies talk of inmates going into the hospitals, being and then coming out alive and going back to the barracks. I find the banality of it all so mind-boggling. You should read the notes of the Doctor trials and even watch the films. I don't know if the're in English

@bigrobcanuck So, if it is 'silly' for the Poles working in the camps after 45 (under guys like Shlomo Morel) was it not also 'silly' for those officers that you can see smiling in that recently releases set of photo's of SS personnel in the camp? However, how much easier is it to say, "I drove the transport truck", than to have to say, "I poured the Zyklon B into the vents" or "I only pulled the trigger". Its AMAZING how few SS people were actually involved in the killing program itself. ..

You aren't saying it was just a case of the inmates running the asylum, are you? That the It was a Nazi program set up and run by the SS. People compelled to move bodies or direct traffic flow by watching their friends and family tortured or shot is not exactly the same thing.

But while I'm not so deep into this subject I've come to most horrible view of it, namely the Hannah Arendt point of view. Ordinary people did as they were told, whether you were part of the SS administration, part of the senior capos who kept order or even the victim being led to death, or threw the zyklon. it just became part of "everyday". To those who understand German the Frankfurt trials are ghastly.

@bigrobcanuck Everybody did as they were told. The testimony (its on film, but in German) of the men who moved the people to the execution areas noted that nobody even pleaded, even when they knew... It was just one more cycle .. no significant force of brutality necessary.. everyone played their part .. almost silently...I think that's why even Commandant Hoess did little more than keep the machine oiled .. He didn't even keep proper count.

The basic hypothesis is that the Jews in Poland worked with and staffed the NKVD in the Soviet takeover of eastern Poland and the rage of the Polish caused them to commit massacres of Jews. The IPN admits the massacres, dozens of cases. Himmler used the defecting NKVD-hating Polish units. Stretch? Ask IPN.

Sorry but you got that wrong. Nazi Germany threw almost all its fighting force against Poland, leaving only a small defensive force just in case the French grew a pair. The end result was inevitable unless the British and French actually did what they were supposed to and attacked Germany.
You are correct though in that other than Japan, Germany was the only other nation prepared for full scale war.

There are many battles in this movie which werent mentioned like battle of Wizno often reffered as polish ''Thermopilae'' 720 polish soldiers with 6 artilery pieces and two antitank rifles fought for three days against 42000 german soldiers with 350 tanks, 600 guns, mortars and grenade launchers and with full airsupport. In opinion of many historians(non polish) its considered as a greatest act of bravery in ww2. Battle like Mokra, Muzylowice, Bzura, Kock, Market Garden, Tobruk, Falaise & Tobruk

Poles had the first concentatin camps in EU --Bereza Kartuska , one for example and also they killed the Ukrainian freedom fighter S.Banderra ! After WW 1 over 850 000 German civilians starved by the consequences of Versailles and Poland oppressed, harassed, deported millions of Ukrainians, White Russians, Germans as a minority in their own stolen country.

@Vulgus997 Except that it was NEVER Polish land, with Danzig 98% German. It was SETTLED by Germans from the beginning. And if you knew your history you would know that there were eight rail lines that Poland was obligated to keep open across the corridor under the agreements. Instead Beck tried to talk the French into a joint attack before German rearmament to grab more German land, and then started to squeeze the rail lines shut and committed the Bromberg massacres. It was a STUPID policy.

@licicaviki Old Prussions were not exterminated but assimilated and the language died out in the 19th Century.Polabian Slavs also not exteminated, like Kashubians and Sorbs either assimilated or left to carry on their culture in Germany. Sorbs are still around and in Lausitz and some of the street signs are in both languages.Again, I can reference the history books , none of which are Australian by the way, all in fact European. The Northern Crusade that you refer to was a Catholic Crusade.

However that is history, truth is it's time to move on.42% of people living prior to ww2 in Osterode ( Ostroda) were of Polish origin, yet they voted 97% to stay with Germany in the Plebiscite.The point is they lived with , married and got on with one another. Germans and Poles all living together, not for 20 years but hundreds of years, and so it must be again. There is no need for any more aggression or hatred.

I think you are surprised that there is a different point of view, based on documented, BUT NOT PROPAGANDIZED facts that give a completely different -- and truer -- understanding of what happened than you may prefer to believe. I don't need the 'last say", I only need the truth of things to be acknowledged. Without it there no future peace.

@historatia Sorry about that I didn't mean to reply to you, I was replying to sexyxrs regarding what defines Slavs, I was making the point that Germans and Poles have lived together for hundreds of years in East Prussia and all got on quite well, and need to get on if the future of Europe is secure.Sexyxrs doesn't seem to get the point as he/she equates Africa and Asia with the subject of German Polish relationships.

@brentano2277 Oh. OK well apology accepted. I actually agree with your sentiment (having been born there in East Pomerania and expelled with what was left of the family. I doubt that the future will unfold with the Germans and Poles getting along. The Poles are emotionally unable to accept that the behaviiour of their own leaders at the time (Pilsudski, Beck, Rydz-Smigly, etc.), had contributed greatly to the ingnition of a war situation that they thought they could win.

@historatia I know, sad truth is they all used to get along.They are all equally guilty at some point of expansionism.In the German territories Germans with Polish surnames were not discriminated against.
I cannot for the life of me understand why this silly German Polish animosity still exists.The lessons of history are not well learned. The Ruhr has many Germans of Polish extraction, they live and work and marry and have children as Germans, no problem.
