One of the best television series EVER produced ! However, I noticed the very beginning of Episode One is missing. This shows an elderly Charles Darwin walking along the " thinking path " reminising about his past life and saying that his teachers and others considered him " a very ordinary boy. "
However, I am so glad this superb B.B.C. series is finally on Youtube.
I saw this first time round '78/'79 - as a ten-year-old! Would a ten-year-old today sit through a fifty-minute drama set in Victorian England? I wonder...

I saw this series about 1980 and have wanted to see it again ever since. The question of why this is not out on DVD has been asked by many. There is a rumor that the BBC is (US)/are (UK) nervous about a backlash from the creationist lunatic fringe, which seems unlikely considering the rich assortment of new programs about Darwin they've produced lately. It may have to do with the impossibly arcane and complex BBC copyright regs. Star Malcolm Stoddard bears an uncanny resemblance to Darwin.
This was a great series. I'm surprised they didn't repeat it when the Darwin bicentennary was being celebrated. Presumably they have it on record.

A really superb TV series that captivated me as a kid; very trippy to hear that theme music again after all these decades!

@sw1pe Agreed. Was that Iain Cuthbertson as Darwin's father?

As and ocean sailor I find the thoughtful absorption of this series the best way a landlubber can comprehend what a life at sea is like.
