I just read her book. This was her first hit and the first time she performed the song live. The same day of this performance Natalie found out that her friend and heroin supplier was dead. She asked his girlfriend to give her some heroin to deal with his death and was walking the streets of Harlem spaced out on heroin. When she showed up for this performance her manager wanted to cancel the show when he saw how messed up she was. But she did the performance anyway. She was high as a kite here.
