  • are you sure it doesn't go to -4 +4 exposure comp? my 50D goes to those levels so i doubt mine has a wider ranger in exposure comp than the 5d mark 2

  • Good video mate, i subbed. What you said about the 5d2 boosting image quality on the LCD really made me ponder.

  • i got my 5d mark II a couple of days ago now..migrating from sony..however the only thing i find difficult is moving from an slt with digital viewfinder..which showed me the exposure before i capture it ...to optical and really having to use what i know to correctly expose the picture

  • I'm sure the fact that Canon is a major printer manufacturer has a thing or two to do with the direct printing button being present on their cameras.

  • nice review, which kind of nikon dSLR did you have and talking about?

Wondering cuz' Im thinking myself to chang brands aswell, from a Nikon D7000 to Canon EOS 5D Mark2

  • Hilarious. Spunk £1500 on a camera that has the lamest AF ever. Stick to your D700, or you would have been much better off not wasting money on a 5d mk2 and a very expensive 16-35 and buying the D800 when it's released which will be far superior to the 5d mk2 and will make use of all your lenses.

  • Used both systems, they both have pros and cons - ergnomically I have become more accustomed to the canon, odd as I used to hate how it handled.

Love the 5D II, af in low light is probably what I preferred the most about the D700 but still they are just tools.

Dom, know how much you like the samyang 85, I can't recommend the Sigma 85 1.4 enough for the 5D, results are cracking from it.

  • The preview that you get is actually a jpeg preview not a RAW one , that's why it looks so pleasing to your eyes Dom.

  • Is there not an upgrade firmware that allows you to customise where your points are?

  • Hey Dom, where did you get your shirt from? I quite like it!

  • direct to print a lot of pro does that especially if you shoot jpeg and you are a photojournalist!

  • I bought a D7000 recently – what a waste of money. I should have gone with a Canon.

  • @Zephear you should try D3000 its one of my favorite cameras , had it , like it

  • @WetOct0puS thanks, but I've had it with Nikon. And it's not just the camera it's lenses also.

  • @Zephear Maybe your right , btw now i have canon 50D , at first I was like "damn that if world most user unfriendly camera'' but after 4 months i toke d90 from my friend and i couldnt do a simple thing in Manual mode

Nikon cameras does tend to have a lot of buttons on camera , sometimes with no practical use at all

  • @WetOct0puS for me it's not about controls, I kinda like them. What I hate is AF, the colors and the display, which doesn't give a smallest idea of what what's going on. The 50mm 1.8g prime i got with my camera was very dissapointing too. It's terribly soft on wide appertures up to f4. It seems like some kind of joke after my LX3 compact camera, which lens is waaay more sharp.

  • i have to ask you Dom if you where a canon shooter from the start do you think you would of bought a nikon d700 or just more glass for your canon? im asking because if nikon is that good and shits all over canon in glass and bodys like some people are saying why not just spend the money on more nikon glass?

  • @dombowerphoto what's that cube thing on you hot shoe?

  • Dom, what is that cube thing on your hotshoe? Spirit level?

  • @Wandomphoto i think its to protect the hot shoe

  • @Wandomphoto It looks like a spirit level cube, yeah.

  • Canon's JPGs always have contrast and saturation pumped right up. Since it's the JPG embedded in the RAW you're looking at on the screen, that probably explains what you're seeing. Same with Canon movie footage. Nikon footage is truer to real colours by default, Canon footage is tuned to 'look good' to your average punter.

  • The grass is always greener on the other side.

  • More importantly, where did you get that great t-shirt?

  • @ToxicBear Sorry but you are completely wrong when you say the ISO settings are a pain with having to navigate through menus when on the Nikon you can press an ISO button and turn a wheel. You can change the ISO on a 5D MK II by pressing an ISO button and turning the wheel, so 'voila!' - it's the same!

  • The reason you like the shot on the LCD is because you are seeing the Jpeg version embedded in the RAW file with all the processing you specified in the picture style ( sharpening vibrance, contrast) + picture styles have their own color balance. Only gets that way on the computer, after you do your processing. BTW get a grip and you will really like the ergonomics of the camera.

  • I, also have to confess I was a Nikon user, till I tried the L glass from canon and I was confused what camera to use, and well canon L glass is awwwwsome, contrast color every thing is better focus speed, noise etc. but between cameras Nikon and Canon are great camera makers but the L glass is wonderful.

  • Also I've found the focus points a bit lacking...the 5D has less focus points than my D90! However, as you mentioned I've found them to focus quite quickly and accurately whereas my D90 struggles when I'm using a focus point other than the centre...At the end of the day I still consider myself a "Nikon guy" but the 5D MK II is an excellent camera and I'm a proud owner despite the quirks and differences between from a Nikon

  • Dom I'm almost in the exact same boat...Was a Nikon guy but I got a good deal on a 5D MK II so now I have both....I agree with you on the ergonomics on Nikons vs Canons...I think the Nikon controls are more intuitively laid out and the bodies have a better feel in the hand...It's funny you mentioned about the pictures on LCD of Canons looking better than on Nikon's screens...I've noticed this exact same thing. Working in retail selling SLRs to customers I notice it all the time

  • I'm a canon user. I used a a nikon on a photoshoot. and I was totally lost. I didn't know how to change the auto-focus points, and even to change it to RAW... Bu over all.. i still like Canon more. I find the nikon bodies more bulky.

  • All the buttons on the right (upper) side is about the same om all Canons.

  • Thanks for the vid Dom. Would like to hear your updates on the camera because I am considering getting one in the near future, either before some weddings I have coming up, or hopefully when they release the Mark 3 and the price dops a bit.

    Cheers.

  • I have a 550d and my friend has a D3100. Both he and i find the 550d much easier to use, the menus (in my opinion) are much easier to navigate, the buttons are more logical and its much easier to use in manual mode! But I'm sure its all subjective to what brand you prefer!

  • What do you have attached to your hotshoe?

  • I agree, it's mostly down to what you are used to. Played with my friends Pentax the other day and it was not easy, not because it's a bad camera but because i never tried on before.

  • To me Nikon is a better camera. I have a D700 and I find it better than the 5D

  • I remember having the 60D and the 7D in my hands before and I didn't like it compared to my D7000. The ergonomics was sooo much better in my hands. I also prefer the high ISO performance of my D7000 vs the 60D and 7D. I also like the button layout on my D7000 vs the Canons, but thats because I been use to Nikon for years now. I know people like that like the ergonomics of a Canon and vs Nikon... I mean its all preference.

  • Hey dom, the reason it looks more vivid on the screen is the picture control button and settings. On canons, the picture control will affect your previews of RAW files before you get them to the computer, and I always set mine to faithful for original reproduction on the photo on my preview screen.

The picture control only affects JPEGs permanently but it also the temporary previews on the RAW files.

Hope this helps and may the canon be with you. :)

  • The picture shown when talking about bracketing/Exposure compensation looks suspiciously similar to one of Ken Rockwell's most recognizable pictures. Was it intentional?

  • Actually, I'm a Canon user and I always find Nikon cameras much more ergonomic!

  • Aye. With my 600D, the pictures on the LCD screen on the back appears more saturated than what I get when opening them on the laptop. I'm still trying to figure out if that's a good thing or not.

As for the exposure compensation being limited to 2 stops, you could get a lot more out of your camera if you're willing to mess with a few technical details (i.e. installing Magic Lantern). That software started off specifically as an enhancement for the 5D mark II, so it's worth taking a look into.

  • I Have a 5D Mk II and a D700 by Nikon ..

I definetively prefer buttons from Canon .. i can get them all without see where putting my finger ..

speaking about ergonomics .. Nikon wins .. no way

  • The downsides you mention on your Nikon are a model or userfault ,because my Fuji S3 Pro(D100) does +2/0/-2.

Before I chose Nikon I used a couple of cameras at a camerashop for 2 days each model and I think that every brand has i pro and cons.

Just look at the buttons on the camera. Things you find on a Nikon somewhere, have a button on a canon. That just shows you what the brand think is important.

    Nikon -> flash

    Canon-> Movie

    Sony-> ...maybe Bokeh? :D

  • @ToxicBear no he didnt say that you have to go trouh the menu to change the iso. you also just press a button and turn a dial. but you have to unloch h1 and h2 in thr menu.

  • I have the Nikon D3 and D7000 and tried the Canon 5D Mk11 for two months and was really impressed. I would have bought one if I had not invested so much in Nikon glass as I really like the video quality and skin tones are really nice. I think Nikon and Canon are both winners in my book but think the Nikon D4 will be a step forward for better video.

  • glad you finally noticed the good side of Canon.

  • The reason I went with the D3100 instead of a 550D is because it felt better in my hands. Sturdier and the button layout was way better. The D3100 just felt right in my hands I dont want a stupid print button on my camera! The back of it was just way too clustered. And the 550D does make images taken look better on screen than the D3100 but I found the D3100 to have (IMO) richer colors and a warmer look which I preferred.

  • From talking to Nikon and Canon users, it seems Nikon long-ago hit upon an ergonomic formula which works, and they have been able to stick with it for decades (including through their F5-D1 transition). Canon are either still in flux, seeking ergonomic formulae which are different from Nikon but which work, or haven't recognised the importance of ergonomics or design consistency. I doubt the latter. I think Nikon simply got the ideal formula first and Canon just obstinately refuse to match it.

  • Thanks Dom.. Just wanted to add that I found Canons are better suited to womens hands, they're very easy to hold & sit nicely in the hand.(i've got the7D & it feels comfy) Where as Nikon felt way to big & cumbersome for me, built for a mens hands I think...

  • I'm okay with 9 AF points, not so much the fact that only the center one is cross type. Shooting in low light requires that center point.

  • Your spirit level is monstrous. There are versions that sit flush with the hotshoe.

  • audio levels. intro is way louder than the following video.

also compare low light focusing capabilities and accuracy, thats where the 5d mk1 i used had problems. especially the centre cross type point was a lot worse than nikon's D50 center point in low light.

i think that canons color is better and you can see that in back screen and also in jpg AND RAW when you choose a profile in camera calibration in lightroom.

  • Well you have hit on the obvious. If I was the Boss at Nikon or Canon, I would make sure that what I put on my cameras sets me apart from the competition. Be it a button in a weird location, I would then say something like "In this camera we have listened to all photographers and have the worlds best". Of course all the followers (should) go out and buy one (This is the aim..SELL) and they get use to these buttons. But given an opposition camera, they will say Ugh can't use this...Job Done!

  • Comment removed

  • Have you ever seen the screen of a 5d mark1 ? And do you hand a Nikon d5100...try to compare that screens

  • Yes, there is a huge difference in ergonomics, after 2 years of using Pentax system, in which I could configure each button as I wanted.

I miss this things in Canons (50d, 5dm2). there no much to play with setting, everything is really close to default settings.

I really would like to be able to autolock exposure when using center point metering mode (spot metering),unfortunately, this isn't possible in canon. Autolock works only with evaluative/matrix metering.

  • Have you switched to Canon fully now?

  • oh, I see you have chosen the dark side.. unfortunately we don't have any cookies!

  • The preview is a jpg file on any dslr. The canons just have better resolution screens, possibly due to video mode.

  • Welcome brother too CANON :D aka canon 5D mark ii user!!

  • @dombowerphoto I think you forgot to link the two video previews at the end. Nice video. I also think that the biggest difference between Canon and Nikon is just ergonomics. Nikon just fits better to my hands and brain but the pictures are the same if i use a canon

  • Did you sell your D700?

In my opinion Nikon is way, way nicer to hold and use...

  • I started with Canon and then switched to Nikon's D7000. Now, I only use the Leica D-lux 5.

  • We knew sooner or later you would come to the dark side!!!

  • @LASTCALLNEWS its called the darkside but it seems so bright!]

  • You went to the dark side.

  • another brilliant video!

  • when you say your getting confused are you taking about button layout or placement? my 7d has the same button layout as the 5d mark2 and i find everything to be very fast and smooth to get to but you can always change what the buttons do

  • Between all the Canon models you have to re-wire your brain a bit. I went from the 400D to the 7D and it took about 2 weeks to get totally used to the difference. The same re-wiring thing takes place when I'm going to shoot with my mates D7000. Totally different.

  • dom do you only use GIMP or do you use PhotoShop too?

  • Dom, i have the 5D with 24-105 and 430EX II canon speedlite. I want a wireless trigger for my flash, and would appreciate your advice on which one to get. Pocket Wizard is in the mind but thats quite pricey! Cheers from Canada!

  • Hi Dome- love ur videos wat type of lense u got on there n price wise thanks

  • I tried Nikon and there were a few things I liked better, but many things I hated. For one the shutter button and aperture dials are in unnatural locations and put my fingers in a strain during use. You have to do many things with 2 hands instead of one, like adjusting the ISO. I sold my Nikon D7000 and went back to Canon. Love my 5D, best camera ever had.

  • Hi Dom. I also love my canon 5d- its amazing I own the 70_200mml ii lense. wat kind of lense is the one u got on there. n price. thanks. gracias-

  • Good video m8!

  • I love that your a nikon fan but not bias. well done, i think i would struggle using a nikon.

  • where did you get that shirt? i really wanna see it up close

  • Dom you should try instead of framing then choosing the focus point, but using the center focus as your only focus point then recomposing the shot. I think majority of 5dmk2 users have switch to that way of shooting as the other 8 focus points arent as sharp. focus recompose focus recompose haha

  • @tommyrave011 Thats exactly what i do with my 5D! i want to focus on the eye and recompose and after doing so for 6 months, i know exactly the angle i need to be to still maintain my focus sharp on even after recomposing with focus lock! cheers!

  • He went to the cheap side.

  • which one you like holding it ? physically

  • I like Canon because of the layout, although the modern consumer ones are getting a bit ugly with the button arrangement, and different shapes.

  • Dom has turned to tha dark side of Canon.... yes!!

  • @LASTCALLNEWS Gradually...

  • Hi Dom,

Knowing where yours fits in the canon range may be useful to know its intended audience.

    Essentially; 600d-Entry, plastic,3.7fps,18.9mp,9 AF-1 cross type,small

    60d-Mid level,nearly 5.3fps,fibreglass resin,18.9mp,larger/more ergonmic.9 cross type AF

7d-Pro,weather resistant,8.2fps,18.9mp,19AF cross type, magnesium alloy. Aimed at sports tog - packed with features.

    All above have crop sensor.

    5d MK2 - Pro,21mp,mag alloy,9AF 6 cross,most importantly FULL FRAME-aimed at non sports tog.

    hth

  • I didnt want to start with the 1d range as its even more complex but hopefully that helps. Essentially the main point is that the 5d is a particular camera with a particular point. The point being full frame. It has great video too but in terms of features it lacks in comparision to the cheaper 7d but again the reason to buy it is the same reason as the original 5d - it made a full frame sensor camera affordable - relatively.

  • @m4drx By the Canon website's standards (just a better way to think of it).. 60D: Low range Enthusiast 7D: Mid-Range Enthusiast 5D: High-Range Enthusiast

The 1D/1Ds series is what's in the Pro range

  • @BrandonKingVloggin i beg to differ my good sir.... the 7D can be for a High range enthusiast as well but.... with out a budget. and ... that is me... ^^

  • @truknayr23 Upgrade to a 5D you'll never look back.

  • @SunsetRC Eventually mate... eventually... but as of now with my budget... i will stick with my 7D for a while.

  • @truknayr23 >< i meant on how the site usually shows it haha Of course it can be used with Pro's but it's high range enthusiast :)

  • @BrandonKingVloggin Hahaha.... if these light boxes weren't this expensive I'd go with a full frame anytime. but... the only weather sealed body that fits my budget is the 7D... so this will do for me for now. cheers!

  • @truknayr23

And the 7D has a killer AF system. All the 19 points are cross-type. This is why I decided for this one as well.

  • @mariokluser Yeah true... true...

  • @truknayr23 True. I'm thinking of selling my 60D for it (because I actually regret not buying it in the first place). So far I'm relying off gigs I don't have and competitions that don't start until halfway through the year for money haha oh and birthday money

  • @BrandonKingVloggin LOL! true true.... counting the payment of gigs that has not even happened is just so true... hahaha... now i am relieved to have found somebody who has these thoughts as well.... cheers mate!

  • @truknayr23 No worries mate! There's always a person that can relate to another and it's very true about the gigs that just haven't happened haha

  • 7d has way more focus points...I tried a nikon 2 weeks ago and was lost lol

  • I tried this camera, it's a good one. But I was surprised when I found that it has a very poor auto-focus in very dim-lit areas. I'm comparing it with my very old canon 40D.

I'd like to know if the difference in auto-focus and high-iso performance worth the price of changing the system in favor of nikon.

I see that there is a t least 1000 dollar difference between them (I'm thinking about a 24-70mm)

  • I switched a year ago from Nikon to Canon and must admit I found it a little strange, everything seem to be in the wrong place, lol. But know i'm used to it and find Nikon puts everything in the wrong place. ha ha :D 1 thing with Nikon it's easy to move from one Nikon to another model as the buttons are all fairly similar and in roughly the same place, Canon tend to move things slightly, model to model.

  • I shoot on Nikon mainly, and from my time with Canon I recall some of the buttons on the 7D and 5D being a little too small for my thumbs. Canon's grips are much beefier but I don't like the shutter release on the 7D or 5D, it feels a bit plasticy. Doesn't get in the way of using the camera though'

  • @Arkasai i agree the shutter releases on nikon are much nicer, although after switching to canon i do like the button layouts better on my 7d

  • The images look good on the back because you're viewing the small jpeg with the embedded image style you have selected. If you want something more realistic you should set the picture style to faithful or neutral.

  • What's that on your hotshoe?

Is your 16-35mm the version 2? How are you liking it?

  • @jnskyliner34 the thing on his hotshoe is a bubble level; probably for video

  • Might I also add. The auto focus way better for shooting extreme sports(7d) over my old d7000. If they combined Nikons layout and menu with Canons everything else. Life would be good.

  • That's the thing with Canon..+1 saturation, which makes it more vibrant.. sometimes its easy to spot a Nikon & Canon.. Both great cameras used both personally I find Nikon's quick Aperture & Shutter dials fast n straight to the point.. also Canon has funny way to name its A,S,M,P modes.. again both great camera's but Canon's marketing is way better than Nikon..

  • The Canon button scheme seems crude at first blush, but it is possible to hold the camera in just one hand and adjust most non-menu settings (EC, FEC, WB, ISO, etc.) at the same time.

I've borrowed Nikons and found them baffling. Some simple non-menu settings require both hands and sometimes several fingers (Holding two buttons while turning a dial). Feels like playing Cat's Cradle, not fast or straightforward.

I think you're right; it's mainly a matter of what one is accustomed to.

  • Went from Nikon D7000 to Canon 7D. One month in and Im still lost. Nikon way easier to use.

  • i left nikon for canon im so so happy its easirer to understand canon its user friendly and im happy with my t2i gonna upgrade to a 5d mark ii soon

  • I haven't used the 5D, but on the 7D, you can reprogram the buttons. I have the focus as a separate button so I can set that up and not worry about it when I frame the shot.

Also, the shot you see *is* more vibrant. They have different "picture styles" that have more saturation (or less) or sepia, or B&W, and custom ones you can set yourself. So, yes, the picture you see there is more saturated, higher contrast, and sharper than a plain raw image.

  • @ManicEightBall ya same here the 7d is amazing it took some time to learn but know forget it being able to remember af points or being able to shoot in single shoot then press a button and be in ai servo or even picking what you want the shutter botton to do and the list goes on lol. i have my DOF set to ai servo

  • if I shoot flat or superflat (e.g. Cinecolor profile) with my Baby7D, the display shows exactly that: a flat and boring pic without enhancements. Good video, Dom.

  • I swapped early from an EoS Digital Rebel to the D80.

This was before I knew much about anything DSLR related and I just wanted something with more poke than my ti.red Canon.

The reason I got the Nikon? It felt better in the hand and the lenses just seemed crisper in motion. Since then I've never looked back. (Now shooting a D700 & D7000)

  • I would say ergonomics and i'm nikon user and i tried a canon and the sensation it's little bulky.

  • bit loud intro there dom, atleast compared to audio when you are talking

  • Comment removed

  • I have had them both and Nikon is far easier to use!!! ...and I started with Cannon.

  • It applies picture styles to the preview on the back and to the jpegs permanently if you're shooting RAW+JPEG. It's also 6.3 burst I think. . . I never use that feature on mine to be honest.

  • is that 17-40mmL a new purchase?

  • @MrEdb94 16-35mm*

  • I'm a Canon user and when I used my friend's Nikon I was completely lost !! Also, the screen on my 550D looks incredible and mainly because it's one of Canon's highest res screens :D

  • Dom have you ever used a 7D? do you know how they compare? everything seems to be better on the 7D as well as it being cheaper? along with cheaper lenses? only thing the 5D has is the full frame?

  • What's that little thing that you've got on top?

  • @NZappletech It's a spirit level.

  • can i ask why did you buy the 5d mk2? when you have your other cameras

  • Comment removed

  • I want one soooooo bad !
