Evelyn was the "black girl next door" in my life,she reminds me of someone I would have gone to school with. She looking like a black woman,even in blk&wht,photos. Yes and a very mature voice at her age,she made black girls feel good about wearing short hair. Almost ever black girl had her hair style that had short hair. 16 she was when she was discovered. I thought "burning" was a man when I first heard it. You had to really listen to it to know it wsa a female singing it.
i met her brother John King in the 80's at a concert. He was really cool and gave me his autograph. I still have it to this very day and he still looks the same.

I don't think Unsung is putting down larger named and more successful stars, I think they're telling the true life stories of various artists. People are scandalous period and none of us know who back stabbed who. It is what it is.
I dont agree that they take cheap shots, when the featured artists admit mistakes they've made and whitney, diana or aretha have made mistakes too and they cannot cause an album to be shelved or promotions to go more to a certain artist than another music execs do though and berry gordy did great things but he did some scandalous shit too lets not forget that...no one is a true saint as a human being and especially in show business
I really do like the Unsung series and perhaps part of the challenge is trying to get a whole story of a performer in 38-45mins is a challenge. As a white boy from Australia who growing up in the 80s & 90s I can't explain how far away R&B music seemed. Other than Whitney & later Mariah we really heard so little. Unsung has the potential of being a good show but when I go back and watch other episodes they take cheap shots at artists who had highly successful careers in order to make the underrated artists look like their careers were more successful than what they were..Why should be someone made to look guilty or feel bad for their success?
@djguy1 Co-sign!! It's cool TV-One is giving very talented but less successful artists from the past the recognition they should have gotten. However, they should not attempt to mimize the artists who had very successful careers to make the "Unsung" artists look better. You can't get mad at Whitney Houston for Evelyn's career nor can you get mad at the Jackson 5/Jacksons for the Sylver's and Debarge's career, etc, etc.
@djguy1 i was thinkn the opposite. how can artist like teddy pendergrass be unsung? he was a mega star. i cant remember anybody saying he didnt get his just due. i love the stories, but i dont really like the title of the show. Most of these artist had great success. unsung to me means someones talent going without notice. big daddy kane was one of the biggest rap acts of his time. i think the title should be changed. it discredits most of these artist great success imo.

Check out her husband Freedie Foxx. I have 2 of his independantly released cds and there very good and near the top of the smooth jazz genre.

@PopCulture20 "Just for The Night" has a true 80's sound. Melba Moore's "Read My Lips" had a rock & roll vibe too & was mostly like underrated by the industry & black community. The only song of hers that I really did'nt care for was "Teenager". To me, it just did'nt go well with her, like it was meant for someone else. Regardless, she's one of my all time favorite singers.

Wow..50?! She looks terrific for her age. my goodness. But, I agree with you @Savvynlady this Unsung has definitely been the most optimistic. She bounced back from her family trauma and is still vivacious and receiving love at her performances.
