To everyone that is commenting on this movie yes it is a good movie but the whole point of the movie was to show how a small town band got big an only made one hit song then broke up cause everyone went there different ways
The "group" didn't "exist" in the 60s but the story happened many times. Whenever you hear a one hit wonder, the comparisons are uncanny. A favorite movie.
I'm a french drummer...Perhaps it is not a real band, perhaps...But Tom Everett Scott really play the drums ! Question : Was he a former drummer before becoming a movie star, or has he becoming drummer during the film ?
tom hanks ..you are great man, you create a phenomenon 'the wonders' ..even its just in the movie, but the wonders wave like really2 exist in real life..i like every song in this movie!
I have to set the record here straight. This song, "Little Wild One" was written by Phil Hurley (Formerly of The Gigolo Aunts). A call went out to musicians to write & submit original songs that sounded like 1964 era Rock. Phil submitted "Little Wild One" & it was chosen & used under the final credits of the film. They didn't use his original demo, but re=recorded it with studio musicians.
Great movie.....could watch it another 100 times and not get tired of it. These actors didn't record these songs, but someone did. That group should put out more tunes.
Yes, the movie was fictional, but the actors really did play their own instruments - at Tom Hanks request. At the end of filming, they could have toured if them wanted to. and PlayTone is also a "real" company owned by Tom Hanks. This movie is such a blast!
This isn't a Wonders song. It's from another group of the same era. The Wonders songs were much more complex structurally and lyrically. Great band. Loved seeing them when they opened for The Rascals (at that time called The Young Rascals).
@gmartinz01 I think you might be confusing The Wonders with a different band you saw back in the day. The Wonders were a fictional band created by Tom Hanks for his movie "That Thing You Do". They never existed in real life, The song "Little Wild One" was written by Phil Hurley (Formerly of The Gigolo Aunts", & recorded by studio musicians for the film. All the songs presented in the movie were written by contemporary musicians, & are not from the 60's.
@drumbeato You're so right. The Boston band Gigolo Aunts (lead vocalist Dave Gibbs, bassist Steve Hurley, guitarist Phil Hurley and drummer Fred Elringham) are all credited as songwriters on "Little Wild One," but Tom Hanks and soundtrack producer Gary Goetzman chose Candy Butchers lead singer Mike Viola as the voice of the fictional Wonders, backed by session musicians. Beatles fans will recognize the guitar lick from "Mr. Moonlight" and the vocal ending from their hit "It Won't Be Long."
but see they sung their own played their own instroments sure it was fake so was the monkees at first. Music is good that's all that matters. Difference between them and the monkees is that they played their own instroments and sung their songs
momosportsgeek is correct... it wasn't a real band, the characters were all fictional and they weren't really playing. They DID however learn to play so they could duplicate the chords and beats of real musicians but that isn't them you hear... the CD soundtrack credits others with instrumentation and vocal credits in the songs. Enjoy it for what it is, a great, fun film about a fictional 60's band rising to fame. :-)
Okay guys... This was a fictional movie.. the things at the end were just sort of mocking those movies that do that at the end i.e. glory road, october sky... :D
@momosportsgeek *sob* Thanks ....for showing me that my heroes were fake people In some stupid movie that wasn't even real. *sob* lol, but relay i thought these guys were real, that makes me feel stupid. lol
@momosportsgeek no it isn't.. maybe it's not completely accurate.. but it sure as hell and heaven isn't fictional completely.. It's based off a true story so suck that mr. know it all.
@moriahnelsonsings I did. there's no proof of anything. there's no proof that either of us are right so lets just pretend that it's real whether it is or not. unless you have reall proof and you can show me.
@moriahnelsonsings and there's a band called the knack that wrote the songs played in the movie and the actors actually learned how to play musical instruments and the songs for real for the movie so that it would be stupid and fake looking. that's why the movie was so awesome. and to be honest.. I don't give a flying f*** whether it's based off a true story or not so.. this is kind of a pointless conversation.
@dundundadadun The Knack didn't write any songs for this movie. They DID do a cover of the song "That Thing You Do". The song was written by Adam Schlesinger, the bassist of the alternative rock group Fountains of Wayne. Schlesinger did not expect his song to be chosen, but tried as "a personal exercise". Performers include Mike Viola of The Candy Butchers on vocals with Schlesinger on backup vocals.
OK yeah they did sing for the movie in the same way as many have sung in musicals (Sound of Music, Ella Enchanted, Enchanted, My Fair Lady etc) funnily enough I actually really like all the musicmfrom this film so was amazed to find out it wasnt from actual professional musicians. Pretty cool though
If they weren't a real band, why'd they make a movie about them? And what about the stuff at the end explaining what happened to all the members of the band?
@gmartinz01 because movies can be about fiction :) they were all characters :) if you dont beleive me just look up the actors, it will never say they were in a real band called the wonders
@gmartinz01 after the movie came out the actors did a few shows as the wonders, and there live album was probably from one of those shows, but no there wasnt a band in the 60's called the wonders. tom hanks wrote the whole movie.
To everyone that is commenting on this movie yes it is a good movie but the whole point of the movie was to show how a small town band got big an only made one hit song then broke up cause everyone went there different ways

They toured with The Archies, Steam and the 1910 Fruitgum Company. They played in Springfield, Gotham City, Bedford Falls and Metropolis.

They were actors playing a band in the movie and the soundtrack album "That thing you do".
Also they learned how to sing and play for real for the film & the album.
No they did not tour but they did release promotional Music Videos for TV.
