@truthbeeeetold The strains of HPV that cause warts are different from the strains that cause cancer. Because there is no routine testing for male HPV, it's hard to know if a man's HPV has cleared up or not. In the case of women, we generally get tested for the symptoms (PAP) yearly. If there's an abnormal result, the person being tested can have an HPV strain test to check what strain that they have. The vaccine inoculates against the 2 most prevalent cancer causing strains and 2 for warts.

In 2000, Dr. Maura Gillison published an article on the relationship between HPV and oral cancers, in the Journal of The National Cancer Institute. Since then more studies have been conducted proving that HPV 16 & 18 can lead to oral cancer. However, you are correct smoking and alcohol combined are currently the main cause but I expect we will see a shift to more from HPV in the next decade.

The most important message to take away from this video is that the only way we will reduce death rates from oral cancer at this point of time- is screenings.
