@strababitus My 17 inch MBP is like this as well, bit shit, because I have an angled stand above my technics decks for djing with traktor, my 450 pound HP laptop sat on there just fine but my MBP cant sit on there as the lid just closes, what a joke. Apple takes the complete piss - Now they make laptops that you can boil eggs on they are so hot.
An update for anyone else suffering. Basically I kept working the lid up kind of pushing it right up forcing it a bit then letting it down slowly then back up, and this seemed to tighten things up somehow. MY MBP is now on my stand on an angle and staying open..Not sure if it will last or not, working for now.
@BenyaminTieh Well, this isn't a proper solution, you have to keep doing it, not practical if your on the road and probably not a good thing to be doing. I have now bought a glide kit to tighten the hinges but I don't think I am brave enough to do it, its obscenely complicated. Apple are such con merchants.
Thats because before the unibody designs, macbooks and macbook pros were as shitty in quality as any other consumer-grade PC laptop. now, the new unibodies are as rigid as a business-grade PC notebook.
i've had the macbook 13.3 white for like 2 years and a half now. it's still in fully working order. i believe that apple macbooks are the best computers around the world. by the way my macbook still takes like 25-26 second to restart ( never been recovered ). it's not about the unibody which is a great looking machine. but it's the heart of the machine which has the highest standards which can handle all the heavy working.
the old macbooks are as good as the new unibody macbooks.
I can show you hundreds of 5 year old PC laptops that are still in working order. PCs and Macs have the exact same hardware platform. They'll both last as long as each other given that you're taking care of them.
Numerous owners of brand new 17-inch MacBook Pro are complaining that their video cards or perhaps notebooks are failing. The new $2,799 MacBook, which was debuted in January at Macworld, features both GeForce 9600M and GeForce 9400M mobile graphics cards from NVIDIA. Owners are now reporting that their laptops have started to show random green lines, artifacts on the display, blank screens and a certain symptom for failing video card.
No laptop, regardless of display size, should do this. The screen should stay where you put it regardless of the pitch or angle you have the computer at.
Look at the tilt angle when it folds... when and where are you ever going to be working at that 45 degree angle?!! Orschinger, at least be realistic and justifiable in your criticism! Then of course there there is the lack of consideration in the design to protect your fingers in that it stopped to ensure you're fingers aren't hurt.
you know, having a laptop in your lap is bad if you are a guy like me, cuz it makes the scrotom temperature increase by 3 degrees and make you have less sperm, scary
I edit with final cut, and wanted to wait for this 17 inch for travel/editing on the move. I now am considering getting the 15 inch due to the replaceable battery..and the 17 inch upgrades are way too pricey...WHY HAVE THEM?- ANTI GLOSS SCREEN...thats gonna be my biggest loss.. With money Ive got now, should I just buy a DESKTOP imac 24 inch, a mate said i cant go wrong, then buy a laptop when they upgrade next, cause right now, Appple's upgrade is ugly/black keys, half a keyboard, overpriced! AHHH!
kovyrosen: I don't think the problem is that the screen brakes before it breaks [sic!], but rather that it drops from its own weight to begin with. My 13" MacBook screen doesn't do this at all.
get it insured? why would people spend so much money on a product and not insure it? -_- mine is insured and I have never had problems, but its nice to know that if I do it can get fixed :P
I hate macs with a passion. I had to get one for school and i whined and moaned about get one. My macbook pro does the same thing. It's retarded. You spend around $3k to get a piece of crap. I've had a few problems with my macbook within LESS THAN a year of buying one for school. Hinges suck, power adapter broke, and now my screen doesn't turn on even tho the comp is on. I think I'm going to go buy myself a PC for 1/3 of the mac price.
I will say this again this is normal I just got another macbook pro today 17" worth 3400 and it does this my other 17" did this if yours are tight then they ran out of 17" hinges because the 17" hinge works different then the 15"
the hinge springs and clutches have weakend , i had this on my powerbook 17'' . only resolve is to replace them , and they will go again as the hinges and springs are not up to the job .. to fragile and small ! for the screen and excess weight . ps i'm an ex - apple engineer .
That looks normal to me i just got a 17" macbook pro with 4 gb of ram and it does that the 17 inch monitor is alot heavier then then 15 inch model the screen is the heaviest part of the screen if people do not have this then the tech people just got a little ancy thats all loosk normal enjoy it.
this is the exact problem. If you want the screen to move, it will do that. Either it goes down at extreme angles, or doesn't move easily at all... take your pick
My Macbook Pro 17 inch does the same thing. And guess what? Now the lower third of my screen is dead. I cannot see the pixels for the whole lower third of my screen. :( And I can't afford to replace the whole top lid (around 1000$). I hope they fix this, if not for me, for others who buy these apple products. :(
Design flaw. The hinges and structure that supports them should be strong enough to support the added weight of a 17" LCD panel. That glass doesn't travel for free. I work for a company that has two of these machines, both have the problem. We have a couple of dev guys that opted for HP nw9440 17" notebooks and the hinges are firm and tight. Of all of the machines in our organization, we have more IT calls on the macbooks and pros than any of the Thinkpads or the HPs we have.
you get that often afteraa period of time, i got thi kit and fix it myself now, to the point where i can lower the door to a mm and it sill does n ot drop, all you have to do is also get th tiny 1mmm screw driver, losses and re tighten the screws around the back and sides, you will be fine ;)
I think all 17 inchers do this. I've owned 2 17 inch powerbooks and they did this, and 17 inch MBP's in apple store had equally weak hinges. I've also owned a 13 inch macbook and currently own a 15 inch MBP and the hinges have more resistance. I think this is just a part of the design of the 17 inch model. I have to agree its annoying.
That is *not* an ordinary thing. That's exactly what happened to my Powerbook G3, and in my experience, it caused the monitor to slowly die. Get it fixed or replaced if you haven't already. If you don't, you'll end up with a really expensive paperweight, as I did.
tell me why you even should tilt it? what's the point? and if you say that's an excuse for not being able to use it in a train,c ar what so ever, that's bullshit!
