Facetime video calling works over wi-fi, not networks, so the iPad needs to have back and front facing cameras like the other tablets. Oh, and real multitasking (not Apple's sem-multitasking) is essential. I want to be able to play a Youtube video in the background to listen to, but no, you can't do that on the iPad. Also, I have had my iPhone 3GS for almost a year and a half and it is amazing, but if it is the best computer you have ever owned, then I feel very sorry for you :'(
Yes, I can imagine the next iPad coming up whit Retina display, new camera and the OS X Lion. Probably the next iMac will also come whit the OS X Lion, multi-touch features and Retina, but not on the MacBooks as they said in the new MacBookAir's video, it wouldn't be convenient. I tink that the NoteBook market is getting close to the end.
Hi Don, I have also just got a MiFi and intend on buying the midrange iPad. Just one thing I have found with the MiFi is it's not to great keeping a 3G connection when in motion, well at least on my train line. Would be interested to hear anyone else's thoughts.
The Data centric world takes shape. ISP's provide data now. Mobile phone companies will also "provide data" as a primary activity in the very near future. Computers that simply work (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) bring it all together. My next mobile phone plan will be data centric rather than call centric, or perhaps just a MiFi device, a iPod Touch an iPad and VOIP for calls, with the Desktop for the "heavy stuff".
Are they SSD drives in the iPad I thought they were Flash Memory like is currently in the iPod touch and iPhone? I would think an SSD drive would make the price of the iPad a lot greater than it currently is. Flash memory is what is listed on Apples Website as well.
@xox1011 SSD is Flash Storage Dude. Flash Memory is Super Fast, so developers decided to cram a bunch of flash storage into a 2.5' or 3.5' casing to put in a computer (Actually Apple does not put theirs in casings, they put them right on the main board).
They Call it SSD because unlike the Hard Drive the Solid State Drive does not have moving parts, making it Super Fast, Quite and Low on power.
So When you hear SSD and Flash Storage, just know they are the same thing...
@entouchgraphics technically yes, but usually SSD is referred to in a hard drive form factor where as in flash memory they don't necessarily put the memory in the same space or size a drive would take up. I do know that they function the same. I think I was just being technical as it was a year ago, I really don't remember what I was thinking.
@xox1011 Oh, Also, One more thing. I know you said that "If it was SSD it would make the price of the iPad a lot greater"... Well when you add SSD to a mac book... They add a 512 GB drive in there adding $1,300 to the bill. The iPad is only 16GB, 32GB, 64GB so if you look at the price increase each time the data is doubled, and multiply that by 32 (The amount needed to get 512 GB) the price is..... $6,400 even 1/2 off is $3,200
So yes SSD is expensive on a large scale, but the iPad is not that.
@entouchgraphics yes that is true, they also buy them in bulk for all the ipads which helps to lower the price. But again I was referring the technical difference between the naming where they don't have an actual SSD in the iPad but rather flash memory which fits the size of the board in what ever position Apple wants it.
@xox1011 True. Apple Also calls their Macbook Air 's Drive SSD... But you pull one of them apart and you will find flash modules on the main board. lol
@entouchgraphics Not anymore, lol any place I can find a listing for it on Apple's website it's listed as flash storage. At least under the tech specs, and the actual ordering page
Well I think Apple have it right with the iPad, as we are going to see a new step change in how software and OS's develop to bring in the future of our computing habits. That is why I am excited as I can see the development of hardware moving along this route for the coming 'evolution' of computing!
As one who has done computer support for 30 yesrs, I think that computers still need to get dramatically easier to use. The iPhone/iPad to me show you what computer operating systems, not just phone operating systems, are going to look like in 10 years. A five year old can figure out how to use an iPod Touch.
I would love an OS X tablet, but it wouldn't be anywhere near $500.
The iPad WILL multitask, and soon (OS 4.0?). Like cut/paste, screaming until then, no one will care much later.
Your comment bout the cam def makes sense from a 3G perspective, but mind u tht half of the iPad versions come with WiFi ONLY n its the CHEAPSET half. Surely there r no or very small performance issues with WiFi n video conferencing. I use it all the time through Skype on my laptop. As such, I only agree half way with u. For me, the lack of camera might be a deal breaker... But it definitely has great potential. Would love if someone made an app to convert the the iPad into a graphics tablet.
I think the lack of webcam is about ergonomics. Think about how you'd have to hold the device to get a good shot of yourself for the other person. You would tire of it very quickly and it would be a poor experience. If you were holding it how it's comforable for you, then the person would be seeing up your nose or maybe just the sky.
I totally agree with you Don. The iPad will really come into its own with the 3G. We'll simply have to see what to do. With iPhone v4 coming this summer, I might get that one and wait for iPad v2 or get non. My iPhone 3G works perfectly with the jailbreak so no need to upgrade right now, just for the sake of it.
Didya catch the news ab0ut da new IPAD2s? It seems that now you can get one from this place.
Ready to get one of these? See my channel for the low down.

Yes but both are solid state devices rather than mechanical platter based devices. Just pointing out the benefits of moving to a solid state device.

Yes, I suppose I omitted the wifi aspect! Still think lots will want to use VC over 3G though!

It's also Tuesday in Denmark, but we are also in the same timezone as Germany (most of it) :-)
