@Drawinglegend Where in the Iliad is said that they had a sexual relationship? Give me a verse.
If you mean the analysises that Plato does in his works, note that some people oftet try to alter some things to fit in their theories. Xenophon e.g. had a different opinion.
But of course your greatest mistake was the reference to a pederastic (not just sexual) relationship. Don't you know that Patroclus was older, how could he be Achilles' eromenos??
@davecolombia My friend, why do you copy and paste MY COMMENTS as yours? I don't care if you agree or disagree with me, it's stupid and rude to steal another man's words. Don't you know english? Put one word next to the other and make your own statements to express your thoughts.
i love this movie, abut in this scene there is something (apart from the obvious greatness of it all) that always caught my atention, there is no sparkling white teeths in this movie, specially for poor people, its a detail that im always greatfull,
This scene captures Odysseus perfectly- he's my favorite of the Greek heroes. In fact, he's the only one I really like. I admire his slippery cleverness.
@Michaletosjr yes in homer's original story most of the heros aren't what heros supose to be alway do something bad like achilles he killed anywone who standed in his way good or bad and he was homo lol in the movie he looks really cool and im NOT sure but i think odysseus killed his doughter in honor of poseidon for god to help them cross the sea x)
Not Odysseus. Agamemnon did that to Ifigenia. But in ancient Greece things were a little bit different. Nowadays, a hero is a beautiful, strong guy who is always doing the right thing. In Greece, a hero represented something different. The hero had to suffer! Hercules, Odysseus, Ajax, Perseus etc they all did cruel things. The hero's fate had to be bad. So being a hero wasn't always good! ;)
@Michaletosjr yeah i totally agreed with you and its precisely because of that that this movie is so nice only shows the "good" thing in the way that the people that are watching the movie want to see x)
@Michaletosjr i agreed with you and this movie is so awesome because shows to the people that are watching the "good" things that this heros did in the way we would like to see.
In other words if i had to tell a story about trojan war would be exactly as it is told in the movie
he was without his wife for many years he needed sum1 to take care of his sexual needs. and odysseus was awesome and he wasnt wimpy havent u read the illiad? when he tied himself to a post so that he wouldnt go afte the sirens he managed to break the chains around him and beat every crew member he had
Sure, sure. I read the Odyssey and I'm disgusted by him. The only reason I look at him in this movie is because Sean Bean Boy plays him. Odysseus was too afraid to stand up to Agamemnon, so he sacks a city that never harmed Ithaca. He also shags to goddesses. Goddess or not, you don't sleep with another woman because that is called adultery. Oh, and not to mention the whole book all he does is piss every1 off.

Is it me, or is Odysseus the Odious an arse? Odysseus is so evil! He didn't want to defeat Troy, he annihilated Troy! BIG difference! He killed everyone, not soldiers. He had no right to live after what he did. He killed too many families so he shouldn't have seen his. Not that he cared about his family. He was too busy pissing off Poseidon and shagging Circe and Calypso. Definately an arse to me.
Do you really think he had a choice? In the book, Hermes told him what he had to do in order to escape from circe's island. He was told he could not deny a goddess. Yes, he pissed off Poseidon. How else was he going to get around Poseidon's cyclopse son. He was trapped. He did what he could, and later redeemed himself in Poseidon's eyes. On Calypso's island, he was thrown into the same situation with another goddess. He couldn't deny her, and escaped as soon as he could. Go read the book.
I have read the book and that's why I'm so disgusted. All Odysseus does is piss people off. Goddess or not, he's still sleeping around with someone other than his wife. And after Calypso forced him to sleep with her, when the Gods told her to release him, he willingly slept with her. That's why he's so disgusting. And he didn't have to destroy Troy like that. It's one thing to kill soldiers. It's another to kill civilians. The Trojans didn't harm him at all.
@orlandogirl213 You are judging Odysseus by your own standards, by today's modern society's standards. The world of the old Greeks is very much different, their societal standards are not the same as ours. In their world, Odysseus is a hero, a man who is cunning, smart, and survived things that would easily break other men. And you clearly understand nothing of Greek culture and warfare. If he didn't help fight the Trojans, there would be no wife, no son, and Ithaca to protect.
@BetaArtemis I know. However, if Odysseus was so smart, why did he have to end the Trojan War by slaughtering every Trojan man, woman, and child? He thought he was a hero for killing innocent people. I know nothing of war, but I do know that his method of taking Troy is not how to win a war, in ancient Greek or not. His sacking of Troy was so barbaric. In legend, he and his men threw babies off Troy's walls. Knowing that and what he did later, I wonder why we praise this creep.
@orlandogirl213 -Because it's fiction. You can take a fictitious dude and keep showing him in different lights. In this version he's a pretty cool guy. I mea, don't get so upset here. In another version, he could be a total monster like you describe, but in the ancient world, slaying every soul wasn't unheard of. War is by nature barbaric.
@Bimfirestarter I know. Still, the Odysseus that I read about is not cool. I can't see him as anything but a monster. War should only be fought with soldiers, never civilians. Odysseus slaughtered as many Trojan people as he could, down to the last child. If Odysseus was so smart, why did he resort to massacre? That's just a stupid thing to do, ancient world or not. The only reason I can stomach Odysseus in this movie is because I love my Sean Bean.
@orlandogirl213 What do you mean my ancient world or not? Time changes, and morals changes. Vaules changes. Look how girls are looked at today, compare that to a long time ago. He followed the vaules of that time. If he didn't start killing, what would happen, trojans strike back and completly ahnillate them all.
@muyangdong Yes, times change, I understand that. However, nothing excuses what Odysseus did to the Trojans. They were never his enemy. The Trojans would never have done anything like what the Greeks did. They just wanted Agamemnon and his men to leave. If Odysseus was wise, he would've left Troy instead of slaughtering them.
@orlandogirl213 well actually if he did just left the greek would have burned ithaka to the ground he did what he did to protect his family his men and his country the only thing odyseus did wrong was cheating on pelelope his wife
I completely agree with you leadedmoose, we cannot attach modern ideas of morality to ancient ideas of love.
Men took mistresses (it isn't fair) but it happened. What is important is *how* he went about it, he didn't force anyone (a-la Achilles) or drag home a mistress to wave under his wife's nose (like Agamemnon). When it came down to it he chose Penelope over immortality.
And the Trojans had some questionable conduct too, Paris ditched poor Oenone for Helen, and Priam had multiple wives.
I'd like to add too that this movie is only loosely based on the Iliad. Gods have been thrown out, for example. It is, you could say, a more modern version of the story - what if the Trojan war REALLY happened? Plus, later in the movie, Odysseus says he can't afford to have Agamemnon as an enemy.
Well, it's not like he's really happy to be going here... he just knows he's gonna have to. And you know this is a hollywood movie, not an Illiad play... And Achilles was what we would call bi nowadays, back then they had no terms for it, but he liked both women and boys like Patroclus...
