The Flyers were the first team in history to get away with their garbage by the NHL the same way the NHL is allowing the Bruins to get away with their garbage today. NHL stopped being real hockey after 1970 and started becoming a bush league garbage joke farce since the 1970s.
@herosfire011 but too bad the B.S.B aren't big if you notice. Bobby Clarke is what 6,1 180lbs dayum players today are more bigger than that. Zdeno Chara, Ben Eager, Alex Edler, Jarome Iginla, and many more are BIG and B.S.B have no chance Zdeno Chara would just knock the fuck outta em.
@GoalHornDJ I'm a Flyers fan but i do agree. The hockey players have gotten a hell of a lot bigger. But it does sem that their not i don't wanna say as tough, cause they're still the toughest athletes out there, but they're not as tough. Just 1 example, during the night Bobby Clarke got his 1000th point, he took a slap shot to the head and didn't even touch the ice wiht his knee. He just shook his head to the side and kept goin. And it's just my opinion, but i couldn't see Chara doin that.
Notice the names of the arenas? The Spectrum, The Omni, etc., before the Corporations took over everything and named it all for themselves. Good ol' days of real sports players & sports fans.
If anyone actually thinks this was such a tough brawl, go to Boston - Montreal benchclearing brawl in 1971-72. Now that was a real fight. This was nothing but a few wimps scratching at each other.
In his autobiography, Boom Boom Geoffrion, in 1974 coach of the Flames, called this brawl "the war to end all hockey wars". He was right on the money with that line.
@7475flyersfan You ain't kidding. I loved watching the Flyers beat up on other teams. Looks like the Flames tried to take a page from the Flyers' book. Shame the Flames couldn't make it in Atlanta.
...and jiggs mcdonald with the play by play on the radio..as a kid, i listened to every single that wasnt on TV...and fights like this, just listening to jiggs..."AND BENNETT WITH A RIGHT!!..SHULTZ COMES BACK WITH A LEFT!!.....ahhhhh memories! :)
Maxkila , I wouldn't rip the Flyers cause , I always liked their style of play and though you guys beat us 4 straight ( and it was our first ever playoff appearance ) I like good hard hitting hockey and I'm glad that the Flyers won those 2 straight cups in 74 and 75 . I miss the rivalry that the Flames and Flyers had when whenever they played against each other , we had the big guys on our team ( Plett , Vail , Lysiak , Houston , Bennett , Brian Hextall , and others . I miss those days !
flyers have always killled everyone in fights and even to this day we are a scrapping team...our goalie will kill if he wants to ....suck it ladies try and skate with us
Thats bullshit...they hated playing the Boston Bruins during the 70's because they couldn't beat up guys like Terry O'Reilly or Stan Jonathan, Jon Wensink or Wayne Cashman. and they didn't like playing the New York Islanders either because they had tough guys like Clark Gilles,Gary Howet, and Bob Nystrom, so they didn't kill everyone in fights and they certainly handed the Flyers their asses on a platter in many a scrap, so you don't know what the hell your talking about.
The flyers were such losers. Flyer's flu? Ya right. The Flyers lost most of their fights unless they were gangfighting. Bobby Clark was the dirtiest player around. Mr. Stickman. Then of course he would hide behind his players and his diabetes. What a loser.
You are SOOO right about Clarke. A total loser. And he is still hanging in there with Philly. Are they afraid to fire him (again) because of the dirt he may have on management??
All you no-nut mothas are crying because your teams couldn't handle themselves back then!!! You should have traded for some goons and tried skating with Philly...too much useless chin music!!!

It was an exciting time to be a Flyer fan. The Flyers brought out the fans in every building where they played. The powers to be almost ruined hockey in the 90's, with their rules that turned hockey into an Olympic game. Boaringgggg.
I'm a Montreal Canadien fan, have been my whole life.I never liked the Flyers but I always respected them. Not many people realize that they didn't win those cups through scare tactics, they won with hard work and a sound defensive system They had Parent, best goalie in the league, snipers like Leach,Barber and McCliesh and an amzing passer in Clarke. This team had some serious talent
Agreed Wrappin...this team had talent. Aside from the afore-mentioned snipers like Leach, Barber ad MacLeish, the Flyers also had some good d-men in Joe Watson, Tom Bladon, and Van Impe. They also excelled at acquiring very good role-players like Ross Lonsberry, Orest Kindrachuck, Gary Dornhoefer, Bob Kelly, and Bill Flett. Freddie Shero also got the most of out his players with a good work ethic and smart tactics. Hey...he even got goals out of Dave Schultz! This was a good team.
Curt Bennett was a tough guy for a college boy (& American). He KO'd Dave Maloney with one punch when Maloney was a rookie, in a game at MSG. Maloney was too green yet to know when you were gonna fight, you had to get those gloves off quick.
Flames were one f%$#^& tough squad with Bennett, Bialowas, Quinn, et al...and the Flyers were...well...the Flyers....not really tough individually but formidable as a group. Flames were known for these too...see Flames vs Leafs same year.
Yeah, they won twice 35 years ago and became the most despised franchise in hockey which continues to this day. And the Russians did NOT forfeit that game. They came back onto the ice and finished the game. And that's the biggest tout of your team? That they were so dirty that an international team walked off the ice? flyers = shit
if you don't like the Flyers, why do you comment on the vids of them? Does it make you feel like a "Big Man" to do so from the anonymous safety of your own bedroom?
Oh, and the Flyers beat the Russians at "that game", and the Russians ONLY came back onto the ice after the Flyers' owner ( Ed Snider ) informed them that they wouldn't get paid unless they finished the game.
I don't like the flyers and I comment on their videos because I feel like it. I don't need your permission. The flyer franchise has been a disgrace to hockey for much of its existence. The dope above claimed that the Russians forfeited the game and it wasn't true. Not the only time that a flyer fan made up the facts as they wanted them to be.
Gee, as I remember, the Flyers won the series and then the Stanley Cup that year. Dave Schultz scored the backbreaking goal on Phil Myre in an OT win.
The Atlanta Crackers, that would be an appropriate name for a hockey team.
I don't think I need to explain!! lol. Was that not the name of a minor league baseball team in Atlanta decades ago.
Since Atlanta is the head office of Coke-a-Cola, they could have called them the Atlanta Crack Cokeheads, then they could have promoted the team in the ghetto and attract a stronger fan base. lol. Im sure that name would fit in line with Bettman's NHL. It is culturally inclusive isn't it..hahaha.
Maybe they should call them the Atlanta Gary Bettman's and only play their games in the US and not play any of their games in Canada...can you hear the chant"go bettmans " from the hugh crowd of five hundred atending the game...lol
Oh man ! I remember that game like it was yesteday . I believe that was the 74 playoff game between the Flames and the Flyers . It was our second year in the NHL and our first ever time in the playoffs . The Flyers swept us in 4 games , but one thing that I liked about the Flames compaired to the Thrashers that we have now , they didn't back down from any team ! I miss those days and the Boomer coaching us , God rest his soul ! Go Flames Go !
An Atlanta based NHL team has still not won a playoff game and it's now 2008, lol, haha. Is their really a decent fan base and corporate base to support an NHL hockey team there. I remember watching games on TV from the old Omni and the place looked virtually empty. I've seen some Thrashers highlights from the Phillips and it looks similar. Atlanta is also the only place where I saw a fan wave the confederate flag proudly after a Flames goal in the 1979 playoffs vs the Leafs. Leafs won of course
God yes. The Flames didn't get out of the first round while in Atlanta but they had HEART. The Thrashers are softer than single-ply toilet paper dipped in battery acid.
And if you think hockey couldn't work in Atlanta, check out the video. We'll support the product if its WORTH supporting. The Thrashers have never, EVER been worth suppporting. They need a guy with a clue who can run the team because Waddell stinks out loud as a GM.
@willc1975 The Flames had heart, and plenty of it too. Willie Plett would fight any body and had the respect of his oponents. I hated Philadelphia then and I dont like them know. the thrashers DO NOT HAVE THE HEART of the flames. for onece I would love to the team that goes out onto the ice and just demolish the other team from start to finnish. no mercy!,no pitty! blood and guts do are die hoorah!!
