Great books... really hard to read. Especially if you're not a fan of the "all good characters must die, because the story is real" type of writhing. Really curious to see how that kind of stuff would do on TV.
I remember the first time I read the "Red Wedding". I shouted "NO!" threw the book across my bedroom. It took me two weeks to come to terms with the depths of the author's writing style. I was glad I did.
Well, all I have to say is that if one wants to make a show about a story of violent fantasy and struggles for power, there is no better place to have it air than on HBO. Other networks may shy away from such violence, but HBO embraces it, good thing this adaptation is airing on HBO, at least we will get the full scale of its epic stories rather than polished and politically correct versions.
Ok what the hell is going on at 9:50 just after the Sam shot, there is a shot of what looks like Ned with a bloody face, a noose tied around his neck, and the iron throne in the background. Anyone got any ideas?
@JackoThe1st Yeah- it's actually not Ned, but his older brother in a flashback scene (notice the white-haired Targaryen on the throne behind him). You can do a google search for "Brandon Stark" if you want to know more about what's going on in the scene.
@raptormeat Oh your right. That makes more sense. Here's hoping we see Jaime in action earning his unofficial title as well. I think it shows how dedicated they are to making this series faithful to the books when they include and actually film all the back story.
@JackoThe1st Great points, and thanks for bringing my attention to that scene. Like you, I just sort of thought they'd gloss over that background stuff. Man, it just keeps getting better and better!
i find perfect Dany; great Ned (even if i was skeptical about "Boromir"), very beautiful Cersei, ok Arya - don't really like Robert, Jon Snow and Jaime...
Btw, seems everything faithful to the books and can't wait to see it!
Come to think of it, the sopranos/csi metaphor is pretty fitting here -- starting from the fact that pretty much every protagonist from aSoIF would be considered profoundly evil in Tolkienverse.
I have read both the series, and pretty much the only thing they have in common is sweaty guys in armor hitting each other with swords. Seriously, given the constraint that they are based in a medieval fantasy realm, I cannot think how they could be more different.
So, without commenting on the quality of the works, saying LoTR and aSoIF are similar is like saying the Sopranos and CSI are similar -- sure, the props look alike, but that's pretty much it.
Yes. We are horribly spoiled. Did you know that the first book was released in 96? Then 98, 2000, and 2005 respectively. We dearly want to know what happens to the characters we have come to know and humbly apologize for this making you sick.
God, I'm sick of spoiled fans bitching about GRRM not finishing his book yet. Just...shut up. Your whining isn't going to get the book finished any faster.
@sarsi212 If you look at the pictures on Entertainment Weekly's website about the show there is a picture of Sansa Stark walking next to her direwolf Lady. Check it out.
Can't wait for that!!!! I particularly love the disturbed characters like Ilyn Payne and the Cleganes, Cersei's lust and Snow's burning desire to become a great knight... Thanks GRRM!!!!!!!!
My question is if this HBO series is going to be as violent and sexual as in the book. If they want it to be as loyal as possible to the books then it has to be R as much or even more than Spartacus.
@Talazorn You're right, and apparently this video is also available in HBO dot com in better quality. But why not release it in good quality here too?
the hounds face isn't burnt for 1 of 2 reasons.either the actor playing has it written in his contract or they couldn't get the special effects right.if you care so much write a letter to MR. martin and ask him
I agree, Robert Jordan could be a bit wordy, but, as little as that takes away from the novels it never drops below Malazan in any shape or form.
I'm not saying that Malazan is a particularly bad series, but it is definitely not of the caliber that WoT is, and because of this, it is below WoT in my opinion. And yes, it is just an opinion, and no one opinion is correct.
Now i read the Game Of Thrones. I am very happy because it was translate in my language, romanian. Is a very good fantasy book. I like very much. Martin, please finish fast the book A dance with dragons. The movie seems to be very good.
Cool!!! I would be interested to read them in Romanian (O Balada Despre Gheata si Foc?) especially because I am interested how some of the more medieval names translate. I've read the books in English. Please tell me how the titles are actually translated. thnx
'Cantec de gheata si foc'. Iar prima parte (2 volume) se numeste 'Urzeala tronurilor'. Numele proprii probabil ca sunt identice, diferenta va fi la 'The Hound', de exemplu, sau alte astfel de porecle.
Just to stress that it takes a lot of planning with any book and he's writing a FANTASY series! He's had to have come up with the world, the history. Everything. Which adds to the time it takes to write because it has to be perfect (in the writer's eye). So give him a break that it's taking a while. We don't want it to be anything less than brilliant. Brilliance takes time.
Haven't started on Malazan yet (I've heard good things), but Wheel of Time doesn't deserve mention in this. That drivel hardly qualifies as fantasy. It hardly qualifies as a literary work unless you like reading endless pages about how a barrel looks or some girls sniffing on their horses circlejerking for chapters and chapters. Plus, Jordan never finished it because he was too busy dragging it out for coin. That crap should have ended about 5 books ago.

Best Fantasy Series ever? I think Malazan and The Wheel of Time would have something to say about that...not to mention that Martin can't even finish the damn thing.
Everybody is entitled to their own opinions; here is mine: The Wheel of Time is the best, ASOIAF is second; Malazan is good, too. Now if you like ASOIAF, which I suspect you do since you are here, then I don't understand how you can say the others suck, because the writing is great in all 3 series.
@AndrewCorvin No, it really isn't great writing. Yes, it's all opinion, but I feel WoT is second to ASoIAF, and Malazan is just really bad writing, period. Malazan is nothing but a succession of deus ex machina every book.. It's ridiculous.

@crinoss2 no, I just saw this. Are they original? It's harder and harder to find new good concepts... what they said here doesn't make me want to see this at all.
Really, it's really impossible to describe what is different, it's easier to write what is similar: it's set in a fantastic world roughly similar to our middle age. That's mostly it.
LotR is an epic history of heroes, fighting to save the world from the evil one(s). GoT is a dark and gritty history of people cheating on each other for power, where the evil ones are just the ones cheating better.

@Alazare1 thank you and thanks to everyone who replied to my comment. As I said I based my opinion on this trailer, and it doesn't seem like much, but you all convinced me to read the books. They seem interesting.
Of course my thanks exclude that rude "iamrafsusername", whom either is a highschool snot that still has his mommy wipe his butt, or he's a 40 something living in his momma's basement, jerking off to WoW dark elfes.
Get a life, and learn from all the others that replied.
Trust me, the books really are awesome, and if the show is as close to the Book and George says it is, it'll be worth it.
I do disagree with Alazare that Martin is better than Tolkien. A song of Ice and Fire amd Lord of the Rings are different subgenres of Fantasy and thus IMO can not really be compared.
@Alazare1 Problem is GRRM was inspired by JRRT and other fantasy writers. And fantasy books can be written in every manner be it dark fantasy, mythical fantasy or romantic fantasy etc,.
Harry Lloyd is a scarily good actor based on what I've seen here. And it must be said that most of the casting is spot on. Iain Glen is a great actor and a terrific piece of casting in the role of Jorah Mormont.
typically covered in unhygenic acne and delusional by nature, they hide in shame within the shadows of their maternal parent's underburrows. The possess the amazing ability to provide oral pleasure to themselves.
I think to say that this story has "so many twists and turns" is an understatement. That's how shockingly unpredictable it is. I'm actually jealous of those people who are gonna watch this without having read the books first.
So far there are only two gripes I have with what we've seen, and those are Catelyn's lack of attractiveness (let's face it, she was never as enticing as Cersei, but she always struck me as reasonably beautiful) and the Hound's lack of... horrid disfigurement. But maybe once we get a better definition than fracking 360 P!!! we'll get a better picture...
@WiredDragoon Yeah Catelyn is the only character who looks completely wrong here imo. I thought the actress who they initially had playing Catelyn was absolutely perfect for the role.

this could have been soooo great - currently starting with the first book, but probably skip it, because why would i chose the book over a audiovisual medium (always better) - but.. it just doesn't look very good production wise unfortunately :( still gonna be a good series obviously, but why does it looks so bad (digitally shot?). ah well, looking forward even more to Camelot anyway (Eva Green!!)
@Ybrethar I agree. I respect Tolkien but killing orcs instead of humans isn't my kind of thing :) I have only read the first book but I already love the series and my brother tells me "Clash Of Kings" and "Storm of Swords" are way better than the first one. Game of Thrones / ASOIAF will be a phenomenon like LOTR. I can't wait for the first videogames either :)
@Zubirrex Yeah, from the descriptions in the book I always thought that half of his face was hideously disfigured. Wasn't it even mentioned that the flesh had been burnt off down to the bone at one spot?
@WiredDragoon Yep, the ear was gone, etc. From the description in the book, I pictured him looking like Two-Face in the last Batman Movie. I understand they can't afford to CG one actors face for a whole season, but I expected it to be more severe. But I'm just nitpicking, I just hope the show doesn't suck.
@WiredDragoon I always picture the scar being around specifically in and around the left eye, but leaving his lower left side and the rest of his face untouched. Like, it's only horrible because of Sansa's view of the Hound.
@Zubirrex Look closer. His ear is missing and the left side of his face looks ashen. It's hard to tell, because his left side is facing away from the light. It's probably not gonna be as horrible as it appears in the books.
Thumbs up if you have trouble distinguishing Catelyn from The Hound in this video...yikes.

@JoaoAlv3s I think the only similarities between this and LotR is that it has swords, Sean Bean, and it was written by a guy with four initials.

@JoaoAlv3s really....really...you don't fucking know what you'r writing!really!read the books!

@JoaoAlv3s LOL not even close. Tolkien can get a few lessons of fantasy from GRRM

@JoaoAlv3s
KngSol 1 year ago
@Alazare1 Problem is GRRM was inspired by JRRT and other fantasy writers. And fantasy books can be written in every manner be it dark fantasy, mythical fantasy or romantic fantasy etc,.

Harry Lloyd is a scarily good actor based on what I've seen here. And it must be said that most of the casting is spot on. Iain Glen is a great actor and a terrific piece of casting in the role of Jorah Mormont.

Thank you HBO for making this possible.

fattkattz55 1 year ago
@fattkattz55 I don't even bother to reply. You must be a obvious troll.
tontsa911 1 year ago
@fattkattz55 Why should they? There are already several of those out, like The Tudors and Pillars of the Earth.

@evilyig agreed! it ended when it should have. It was a complete story.

@fattkattz55 This isn't a movie. With all the pre-series fans they have, they should HAVE no problem getting the ratings they want.

@fattkattz55 Your parents failed. At everything that involves you. I hope someone goes medieval non-fiction in your ass like 1100 times. Fag.

WiredDragoon 1 year ago
@WiredDragoon Yeah Catelyn is the only character who looks completely wrong here imo. I thought the actress who they initially had playing Catelyn was absolutely perfect for the role.

WINTER IS COMING!!! YAY!!!
And so is the 5th book, if the rumors are true.

There are two actors in this show that look like Gaius Baltar: Jon Snow and Viserys Targaryen.

this could have been soooo great - currently starting with the first book, but probably skip it, because why would i chose the book over a audiovisual medium (always better) - but.. it just doesn't look very good production wise unfortunately :( still gonna be a good series obviously, but why does it looks so bad (digitally shot?). ah well, looking forward even more to Camelot anyway (Eva Green!!)

Best fantasy series ever written.
Ybrethar 1 year ago 43
@Ybrethar I agree. I respect Tolkien but killing orcs instead of humans isn't my kind of thing :) I have only read the first book but I already love the series and my brother tells me "Clash Of Kings" and "Storm of Swords" are way better than the first one. Game of Thrones / ASOIAF will be a phenomenon like LOTR. I can't wait for the first videogames either :)

The Hound @ 8:40. Looks like the scar is pretty small.
Zubirrex 1 year ago
@Zubirrex Yeah, from the descriptions in the book I always thought that half of his face was hideously disfigured. Wasn't it even mentioned that the flesh had been burnt off down to the bone at one spot?
WiredDragoon 1 year ago
@WiredDragoon Yep, the ear was gone, etc. From the description in the book, I pictured him looking like Two-Face in the last Batman Movie. I understand they can't afford to CG one actors face for a whole season, but I expected it to be more severe. But I'm just nitpicking, I just hope the show doesn't suck.
Zubirrex 1 year ago
@WiredDragoon I always picture the scar being around specifically in and around the left eye, but leaving his lower left side and the rest of his face untouched. Like, it's only horrible because of Sansa's view of the Hound.

@Zubirrex Look closer. His ear is missing and the left side of his face looks ashen. It's hard to tell, because his left side is facing away from the light. It's probably not gonna be as horrible as it appears in the books.
