I'm doing an entire Wildwood boardwalk and piers in RCT3 based on 1980, it will include Castle Dracula (mine's better) and all the old rides of that time including Fun Pier and Hunt's Pier. Fun Pier had a "Castle Frankenstein" opened 1978, closed 1982, burned Aug 1984 probably to compete with Castle Dracula.
who??? well here i am i work out of stone harbor n.j. service all of the wildwoods and still no new castle. stop spreadin' rumors. to hell with you. in 1991 i was 13yrs. old and my aunt had a small place on Roberts Ave. in W.W.the summers between 1991-1995 was AWESOME!!! R.I.P. castle dracula, this past summer i took my kids to the arcades(Schelingers,Supercade and it is great nighttime experience
Wildwood in the 80's ruled, it really was wild .You could drink under aged anywhere and could smoke a joint right on the boardwalk. There would be so many thousands of people even after midnight no one would even know where it was coming from. Don't think you could get away with that stuff these days. Thanks for posting, this is truly part of NJ history.
I also want to go back to WW and go through the Ghost Ship on Mariner's Landing, do the two indoor blacklight mini golfs, one was new last year and the other one was built where the Den of Lost Thieves ride was, and the new haunted house on Sportland inside the former arcade if it opens it was supposed to open August 2010 but they got held up by the city of NWW, fire marshals, etc. It looks good from the previews, though like on funchase and there's a website house of haunts dot com.
The music playing here used to play continuously in front of the castle at least from the mid-90's on. My first time through was August 1995, then June, 1996 and June, 1998. I haven't been back to WW since then. I also visited WW in 1980, 1981, 1982, and 1983 with my father (passed Mar 8, 1986), mother, and younger brother (born June, 1978). I was born Jan 14, 1974, I just turned 37. I also loved Hunt's Pier in the early 80's, shame it's gone. I want to ride the rebuilt Golden Nugget at Knoebels
i never got to go to castle dracula because i was born in 2000 so i was only 2 when that place was burnt down and i can tell how many memories all you have so i feel the pain because it makes me sad when i never get to go on a ride before its gone
@Hazeleyes52172 it was awesome-i got to see it when it was relatively new and had people running around it in costume. i was sad when it was torched. the boat ride was one of the oldest rides in wildwood at the time. the castle had been erected on top of that ride.
wildwood was a special place for me growing up. i will never forget the wax museum or dracula's castle. those places were one of a kind. i was heart broken to hear that the castle burnt down. it really would be great if it could be rebuilt. wildwood just isn't the same without it. i was fortunate, as many of you were, to go inside the castle as a young kid... and yes it did scare the hell out of me. truely a unique experience and venue. really a shame to see it go.
That was the Golden Nugget ride. It ran from about 1960-1998. They tore it down earlier in the year and the rails and cars were sold to Knobbel's Grove in PA.
There's a whole street of haunts on a slope at Niagara Falls, ON Canada including a different Castle Dracula walk-through, it has up and down stairs inside, about 6 haunts total plus other amusements. Ghost Blasters dark ride, etc. The street and amusement area is called Clifton Hill. I was there July, 2006 first time. I was also at Lake George, NY Aug 2004 and they have 3 haunts, Dr Morbid's Haunted House, House of Frankenstein, and Alien Encounter.
Intriguing! So glad I was brave enough to walk through this haunt and float through the dungeon when I was about 11 or 12 in the early 80s. Why do all of these places seem to perish in flames? They're great, but are they just money pits that need to get 'disappeared'? It just seems odd.
It would cost $10,000,000 roughly for the Nickel's family to rebuild the SAME castle dracula. a bigger one might cost more. besides, it would need newer things that are very expensive. it costs 100,000 dollars to remodel a small-grade dark ride. this one would cost millions to build. dont blame the nickels family, blame the 2 idiots who snook in and burnt it down!
Ok so we cant bring back the "old castle" but why cant we build a new bigger better dark castle to honor its memory? Come on since 01 us horror buffs have suffered without a real dark ride...so lets create one...
The family owning the attraction made $400,000 a year on the ride. Sounds like a lot but I believe I heard that to rebuild the castle would take millions of dollars [I don't remember the exact amount]. I divided their annual income by the amount it would cost to build it, and they would finally finish paying it off roughly 20-30 years later. That's 20-30 years without any profit and there's a huge chance THAT one would just burn down too. It's not worth it.
Wildwood is a shade of its former self from the wildwoo I rememember from the 80s. Not is there no dark rides, there are very few arcade games either. Most of the games are now prize related and fading fast.
Dantes Inferno is still there only its called Dantes Dungeon. Castle Dracula was the best but Castle Frankenstein on the old fun pier was WAY creepier.
Might I add that currently, NJ has NO permanent summer walk-through horror attraction anywhere! You now have to go out of state for summer or year-round haunted attractions. Like at Lake George, NY 50 mi north of Albany, and Niagara Falls, ON, Canada which has about 6 year-round haunts. Or, Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach, and Gatlinburg, TN which have permanent haunts. Orlando's Skull Kingdom haunted castle closed down and was torn down for condos. Also, Terror in Orlando new upstart haunt closed.
Yeah, but kickflip the sad thing is that it's almost impossible to rebuild the way it was, the props, paintings inside were created by retired Disney artists in 1976 and many of them are no longer alive. One of the Nickels himself said on the news in 2002 after the fire that it's irreplaceable. Wildwood lost too many other dark rides so as it is. Like former Hunt's Pier, etc. There has been no effort by the Nickels to rebuild it or a similar attraction. WW now has no walk-through haunt.
No, Brigantine was in Brigantine New Jersey (North of Atlantic City) Brigantine, Dracula's Castle and Long Branch Haunted Mansion were all rivals for the Jersey Coast's best Haunt. Brigantine burned to the ground in 1987. Dracula's castle didn't burn until 2002. It should still be up to this day. I run a tribute every halloween up in Bergen County for those people who still very much miss it. But now i'm looking for a new place to do it. Any one willing to give me a place to run it in NJ!?
If you want to check out some creepy haunted attractions this year, go to Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada, they have a Castle Dracula, House of Frankenstein, etc. Indiana Beach has Dr. Frankenstein's Haunted Castle. Lake George, NY has House of Frankenstein, Dr. Morbid's Haunted House.
Great job on the video Carrie!! I was hoping that the Nickels family would rebuild the castle, or at least something close to it. I am still so bummed that this happened to our beloved Castle Dracula. Can't wait to see how you will resurrect it (hope it includes the Boat Ride, too :) )
you're welcome. I never will forget the summers I spent on the Wildwood Boardwalk, and every time I passed the castle and heard that music. I would always say "This is the year I'm visiting the castle, but I would chicken out. The year before it burned, I finally did go and I'm glad I did. It wasn't as scary as Brigantine Castle was, but it came darn close. It's so coincidental that Castle Dracula, Brigantine Castle and the Haunted Mansion in Long Beach Island all perished by fire...or is it?
Dude, I'm so jealous. I said the same thing every year, "I'll check it this year". As soon as my family and I arrived on the boardwalk, I'd chicken out, like a little pussy. Around the Christmas holidays of '01, I thought about it and I thought, "Summer of '02, I'll check it. If I freak before I go on, tough. I'm checkin' out". Then, of course, those little pyromaniacal pricks decided to torch it. Oh, well. As long as I was able to check out "Eastern State Penitentiary"/
Wow!! You actually went through "Terror Behind The Walls?!! What was that like? I watched the info on the prison's website and a friend of mine that I work with and I were supposed to go, but I chickened out. Was ESP as scary as I have heard? Did you go through Lock Down with the little flashlight?
You may have heard ESP was scary, but what you heard is an understatement. ESP is so much scarier than you've heard. UGH! I practically shit my pants, but it was very cool. There are five sections you go through: INTAKE, LOCKDOWN, 13 ROOMS, THE EXPERIMENT (IN 3-D), & NIGHT WATCH (which is the room you go through the little flashlight). The whole thing was very, very cool, though, as scary it as it was. I'm definitely goin' back this year. You ought to try it, it's amazing.
NIGHT WATCH is the one where it's all fogged up, which is why you have the little flashlight. It's very, very, very scary. I literally felt like I was in a horror movie. It's so dark in that particular section, you don't know what the fuck is gonna pop out. But it's all good, though.
Cool!! I try to be brave with these kinds of things, but I've heard horror stories about ESP and how scary it really is. I'm going to try and psych myself out to go this year like I finally psyched myself to go to Castle Dracula. I never will forget that summer following the fire; the first time I was on the Boardwalk and walked down to wheere the castle used to be. I wanted to cry, it was so sad not to see the castle and hear the foreboding music.
I know what you mean. Soon as I heard about the fire, I was pissed. I remember the first time I ever saw Castle Dracula. It was in the Summer of '91 (Damn, I was 6 years old at the time, now I'm 23). Just the exterior and the dummy Dracula on the small terrorist scared the living hell out of me. One of the actors, who stayed outside the castle, was actually nice to show me that he was just an actor. I look back on that now, I laugh my ass off.
lol..that's funny because the first time I saw it, it scared me, too. I'm okay with going through haunted attractions when I'm riding through them, but walking is another story. I thought that maybe I would go through the dungeon boat ride, but scrapped that idea after I heard the people screaming and the face of one of the people. She had a look of absolute terror on her face. It just makes me so mad that the castle was destroyed, especially since a lot of props came from Brigantine Castle.
"Then, of course, those little pyromaniacal pricks decided to torch it."
yea well grow up because i was one of the two arrested and it wasn't something we planned on doing...it was an accident and i miss it as much as anyone else does
Go fuck yourself, you little asshole. You fucking deserved to have been arrested for what you did. You think I give a fuck about you being arrested? No fucking way. I don't give a fuck if it was something you planned on or didn't plan on. You still fucked it up for Wildwood fans.
And don't fuckin' tell me to grow up, when you're the one who needs to do the growing up. After all, only a little immature fucker, like you, would set an amusement park ride on fire.
well first you little 15 year old moron it was an accident...and trust me time in jail is well worth the punishment of what i have done. I have paid for my actions and don't need some little prick like you try to bring me down. I am sure you no better than the other pieces of shit that want to "kill me" for what i did, i have apologized for what i did many times and i was a fucking moron for even being there. so yes grow the fuck up. you have no idea what i have been through
FYI, you stupid little cocksucker, I'm a 23 year old. I don't give a fuck what you've been through, while you paid your dues. My family and I are going through something much fucking worse, than what you went through. I've read the fucking report. You didn't serve time in jail. You served three months worth of probation, (included community service, Fire Hawkes Program, family counceling, an essay stating your apologies, and having to fork over $2500 to the Violent Crime Compensation Bureau)
Exactly, such a ROUGH due paid there. Do you realize your burned down a historical "landmark". So do not come here flaunting your words thinking we care what you have "gone through," after this. You F*cked up, end of story.
kickflipvictim, If it really was you who torched the castle (accidental or not)... then why would you come on to a FAN video, say what you did and then expect sympathy? This is the absolute worst place for that. We miss you Castle Dracula!
im sry but i to also miss the castle and was hoping to find some footage me and my friend took while going through the ride one summer....he said he put it on youtube but i can't find it...i reacted to people comments saying all this stuff about 2 people they don't even know or even what happened, im not looking for any kind of sympathy because i know what i have done was wrong but people that don't know me have no room to talk about the kind of person i am
It's in Roller Coaster Tycoon 3. It's a 3D amusement park sim, and there are two expansion packs for it plus tons of user created scenery, tracks, and buildings for it most at the Atari RCT site. This was a haunted house and boat ride that opened 1977 and burned Jan 2002. The boat ride opened 1919 as Ye Old Mill and was rethemed over the years and became the Dungeon in 1976. I did one myself, but not finished in a Wildwood boardwalk park.
Hi Carrie, great job. I miss this attraction so bad! I visited it in Aug 1995, June 1996, and June 1998 although I saw it but didn't go in between 1980-1983 when WW still had most of their dark rides, they lost some back then to fires in 1981, 1984. Please post more videos of this! I made one myself in a WW park but didn't finish it.
My name is, Ed Harrington and I had many memories of Wildwood and castle dracula. I am 37 years old now and the first time I went through the castle was in 1981. My grandparents and I would go every summer and let me bring a friend. The castle was the only reason I would love to go besides playing dragon's lair in the variety corner. So sorry it is gone.
Hi Ed, my name is Tony. I'm close to your age, 40. I also have great memories of the castle. It was great exciting, scary fun. Do you remember the Chamber of Horrors/Wax Museum next to the Screem Machine coaster? That was plenty scary too. Dragon's Liar was a great video game I played as well when I visited there on my summer vacations. Just in case you didn't know, they have it on dvd rom now for your computer. It's not the same as the arcade cabinet in Variety Corner, but it's still fun.
Hey Tony, it is, Ed Harrington. Yes I do remember the wax museum. I went through it a few times. Also thank you but I do have dragon's lair for my computer and dvd. Tony do you remember frankinstein's castle on fun peir? It burned down in 1982 I think. Also do you remember the haunted house on hunts pier? How about wacky shack? Tony I tried to get a dvd of castle dracula. The owner was selling them. If you or anyone knows how to get one, I would really be thankful. Thank you.

yea well grow up because i was one of the two arrested and it wasn't something we planned on doing...it was an accident and i miss it as much as anyone else does

Haha, this little asshole's account is closed. I hope he wakes up every morning with guilt and shame clouding his thoughts.

Thank you.
