I don't necessarily object to this. Gibson's objective as a business is to sell to as many demographic niches as possible and this may appeal to those with a geek orientation. At $3500 (is that MSRP or street?), though, and with underemployment in this country as high as 23% in some places and likely to stay that way for a while, continuing to put out high end stuff is a risky strategy. Good thing they have Epiphone. But qualitatively, ESP eats Gibson's lunch.
Epiphones are cheap imitations. no wonder you're bitching about an expensive real les paul. Keep saving the pennies, mate, and you might be able to afford a real guitar one day.
@superstriker00 : Look, mate, stop laying semantics with me. Let me put it in less controversial terms then: Epiphones are budget replicas for people who are too broke to afford a real man's guitar, a Gibson.
@samdathi - Having a more expensive "real mans guitar" doesn't mean shit. If you can play guitar well then you can make any guitar sing. Don't be such a snob, there are many better guitars than les pauls even though I love em to bits and many are cheaper. It doesnt matter how expensive your guitar is, it matters what you do with it.
i beileve it is a really ugly guitar also right there with you budy who has grey pickups with a black pickguard looks absolutly terrible the only part that looks good is the back of the headstock
I dont know about robots and the darkfire. They look cool and sound great but i sure hope they don't stop makind the amazing original les pauls for these. It doesnt feel as real unless you tune it yourself and theres no charging of batteries or anything like that. The good ol les pauls are the best to me hands down.
@samdathi The technology or cost doesnt frighten me at all. Particularly when an old les paul can cost ten times what a robot or the darkfire does. They are more precious and more valued and they just feel more real. Wheres the fun in having a guitar that does everything for you except play itself. Im all for the tech being created and i think its amazing stuff that gibson have done but i just know that im never gonna want a darkfire over a classic les paul.
@Olie23231 The Darkfire doesn't do everything except play itself. That is a gross mischaracterisation and exaggeration. You say you're all for tech being created but the underlying tone of some of your comments clearly suggest the contrary.
I'm growing a bit tired of so called 'true' guitarists bitching about any advances in our instrument. As I say, the same kind of people bitched about the first solid body guitars like Strats and Les Pauls - they believed that guitars had to be hollow.
@samdathi I never bitched about anything XD i stated my opinion about these guitars and some must feel the same cause i got thumbs up for my comment. The technology is truly brilliant but i just dont want it to take over so you can only buy robots/darkfires etc. I want to still be able to go to buy a gibson in a couple of years and have a good range of guitars including darkfires and new guitars to old classic les pauls.
@Olie23231, Ok fine but I think it's slightly irrational to fear that robot guitars will take over. This is not Terminator. I'm sure there will always be a market for those who want to tune their guitar themselves.
@Olie23231 i no what you mean because to me, there is nothing more psecial them pciking up a guitar and just tuning it and playing it all day long, its my pashion. love the originalg gibsons and im on board with you man
The self tuning thing is a great idea, but I would've put the tuning motors under the back stop in the body where they would be less vulnerable. It may be cool to watch the tuning pegs turn, but you could use a more robust/ reliable mechanism inside the body of the guitar. And if it kept the guitar in tune as you played, that would be a real plus, boy.
Never understood the whole 'modeling' thing, why not just play a Strat? A lot of this stuff just seems gimmicky to sell to fans.
haha, love the "pie zone" pickup ;) seriously though, all this futuristic stuff, is it really necessary? i mean who is so lazy they can't be bothered to manually change their tuning? or pick up a different guitar?
so does this combine the robot tuning with the digital output featured model from last year? Does the breakout box digitally give you the six separate strings?
my friend had said they got them in at a music store and apperently they're not that great, i think the fender version makes more sense. You leave the guitar tuned to standard but the electronics magicly makes the sound another tuning, non eof this robotic tuning stuff.
Never buy a Gibson at all! The quality is sooo bad. Buy a Heritage! Ive been playing for 15 years and never came across a a really good Gibson. The best sounding one was a 68 Les Paul Custom and guess what, it was crafted only so so. Gibson is only about making money, they don't care about the guitars. They have the name that sells itself no matter what!
You're a dumbass. If you read further into the guitar you would also see it has an electronic intonation feature that tells you if it is set up properly.
How cool would it be to buy a Gibson Les Paul for $700 that played great and didn't have Made in China stamped on it? Gibson, if you're reading this I want to tell you that I refuse to buy a new Gibson guitar until you guys pull your heads out of your asses and make a quality guitar that costs under $1000. Now go oil your robots and think about what I just said.
Here's a thought, how about making a quality guitar for an affordable price that's made in America by Americans? Personally I don't want a guitar that emulates other guitars, tunes itself and costs $3500 friggin' dollars. Do you or do you not know that one of the first things guys do when they buy your new guitars is rip out the electronics and replace the caps and pots?
Right on man. I feel the same way. If they stopped wasting all of this money on the stupid fucking robot guitars, they could actually make a decent fucking regular Les Paul (the new standard and traditionals suck).
I hate all this emulated sound crap its taking away all the fun of buying the equipment to find your sound. I could not be happier with my Marshall and Gibson and I certainly never want my Gibson to sound like a telecaster who the hell would?
apart from the robot things, this is the most beautiful guitar gibson's ever made!

The only use I see for that guitar, is in a recording studio. It's a great idea but the end result is ugliness and too many fiddly bits.
Gibson have been flogging this dead house of an idea for years... and I fear they will for many years to come.
Although I do like the intonation functionality.

i completely disagree ...
if you got used to solid state amps and so on, you'll be satisfied with modeling shit.
if you want a real, full, genious guitar sound, you HAVE to change the tuning and HAVE to use an EQ instead of the fender vg mode knob crap.
