  • Just to clarify, no computer animation here all done by hand by one guy, Dan Ivanick , I did all voices, my name is John Barilla.

  • I'm still amazed that a lot of people remember this character , I was the voice and if there were other characters like the elephant , Idid those voices also , I have I think 6 of these but I'm not sure , they are on video VHS so I hope I can convert them and post all of them because the two that are on here have gotten some welcomed attention , Thanks for all the nice thoughts , John

  • Thanks for all the kind thoughts. My name is John Barilla and there were actually six of these spots and they were fun to do. I was his voice. Glad you all remember the character so fondly

  • i love this cartoon! :D by the way do you have the other 2 episodes, one is the hippo and another one is the snake? cos i missed these 2 alot.. thanks. :)

  • yes yes yes i love this

  • Thanks my name is John Barilla and I did the voice for this character I appreciate the kind thoughts..

  • Know why he's my favorite character on sesame street? Cuz' he's cool. ^_*

  • Was this really your favorite character I did the voice and that's very gratifying , thanks so much. My name is John Barilla and I'm a New York based actor.

  • LOL at the end he's all like, "screw it."

  • Maybe its Morse code? :-) -...-...-...-

  • i used to find this guy soooo boring, dunno why! the voice i think

  • I REMEMBER THIS!!

  • I love the design of these---the detective is nothing but bunch of balloons wearing a hat, and the backgrounds are jagged abstractions of bright color----and dig them crazy panning shots with those tilted angles! Fun stuff.

Were there any others besides this one and the one with the hippo?

  • I don't know.

  • Yes there were. One with traps. One with a snake and one with clever ways to escape a crock.

  • yeah. there was another one i remember vaguely. from what it seemed, the detective was trying to do some exercise and run away from another guy.

  • There were two other of these detective skits. The first one was where a snake's head entered into the detective's office, the snake's middle was all knotted up in the office, and the detective was trying to find out where the snake's end was and where it would lead the detective while trying to find the snake's end. The other detective skit was where the detective found a lever at a dead end in a street and wondered what would happen if he pulled it and what he can do to avoid at what happens

  • Don't forget the one with the hippo. And if jx346's memories are right, the onw where he's running away from somebody. So that makes at least four, or perhaps five.

  • Yes, that makes five detective skits. Also yes, I do remember the detective skit where the detective was exercising but, I could be wrong but, I think the detective didn't know that there was someone trying to catch him because his back was turned while he was exercising. When he jogged while being chased, he didn't look like he was running fast. The detective was probably preparing himself to be strong in case a bad guy confronted him and he would be strong to face the bad guy.

  • Hahahaha! Those lines and dots were made by a malfunctioning painting truck!

  • That truck spits out the yellow oil on the centre of the street. Cannot concentrate.

  • i liked this series. i always thought those animations were funny b/c the detective's nose was so big and he moved so fast. thanx 4 posting

  • It's been years since I've seen these detective segments. I, too, would like to request the one with the lever and what may happen if he pulls it.

  • Anybody got the one with the lever that's pulled and the detective supects his potential happenings? Such as trap door, guard dogs, etc.

  • Wow-another segment I forgot and suddenly remembered all over again thanks to you. Thanks.

heh-the ending was hysterical! poor detective.

  • This was actually from the late 1980's.

  • If you got on Muppet wiki it says that these sketches were from the early days of the show.Unless it's just this sketch it's from the late 80's?

  • It's definitely 1980s. I remember it first appeared then.

  • And it's 1980s-style computer animation. If it were from the 1970s, it would look like the primitive Scanimate stuff on "The Electric Company".

  • Wait--what makes you say this is computer animation? This is definitely drawn.

  • @wattamack4 I just found out on that website being mentioned here it first appeared in 1987.

  • More like mid. I remember seeing this at three, and that would have been 1986. (And who knows how long they'd already been there)

  • Man, I love those kind of Detective cartoons! Thanks for putting it up!
