I guess that means everyone needs to destroy Peter Pan and his merry children as well ! Absolutely hillarious how humans look for a reason to hurt other's accomplishments in artistic expression. Iam of aboriginal descendant and actually i don't find this offensive in my oppinion im proud that another country see's us as traditional owners and our culture here in australia...and as for gracom1977 there are honest hard working aboriginals out there, the majority of our people may drink and have poor education,,but from who's hands these piosons passed on by mmm? i think your comment ment more than this clip,,now thats offensive mate,,!!!

@flyingwind66 First of all, not just Aboriginals found fault with the skaters. Secondly, the black tap-dancers in the link I provided weren't being true to Irish dancing either, working elements such as hip-hop into their routines. In the absence of hypocritical, anti-white double-standards, there would have been no complaints about the skaters OR there would have been complaints about both the skaters & the tap-dancers. In other words, equal treatment.
@Remorselesslymine actually irish were also subjects of oppression. Just because they are white don't mean they were "white". The "white" in this statement is made out as to be the current system that is leading to globalization and the take over of the white race. Oh and i am not racist I just aint a folk theorist like most of these people in this message board.
@mylabonte The Irish were and are White because they are genetically similar to other White European groups. I'm not interested in the old ethnic feud between the British and Irish. The opinion of some long-dead Brits with a vendetta against the Irish didn't and doesn't make the Irish non-white.
@Remorselesslymine yea i know they are white NOW....but back then they weren't....and seeing how the irish assimilated is very important to see how other colonialistic nations are trying to assimilate other nations such as the aboriginals or other Indigenous nations....like the asshole above me claiming aboriginal and not understanding the offense
@mylabonte The Irish have always been White. The opinions of some long-dead Brits who didn't like the Irish doesn' t count. In the past, many people, many of which were scholars, used to think blacks were non-human. Does this mean blacks were non-human until fairly recently? No.
I really don't see why people keep bringing up the tired old "Irish once weren't considered White" line. Really, why do you do it? What's the point?
those who are doubtful as to the offensive nature of this dance/ performance, should indulge in a little reading and study of Indigenous Australian culture and history. Not the sort you find in the education curriculum or those written from a colonialist point of view, but histories and stories written by Indigenous Australians! Then and only then should you comment on whether this was offensive or not.
seriously. all you people saying "i don't see how this is offensive" obviously aren't australian aboriginals. it's easy for you to say it's not offensive because it's not your culture. this dance is filled with stereotypical moves making the culture come off as simple minded and uncivilized. it's like watching children stretching their eyes to appear asian, they aren't aware that it's wrong 'cause their kids, they don't know any better. this pair should have known better. period.
@trueblue4686 if they didn't know any better, then they should have done some research. it was pure ignorance. sometimes you just have to use your freaking noodles before you do something. they obviously didn't, and being russian doesn't excuse them.
@pinto89100 Isn't ice skating technically a dance style? Also, don't the Aborigines have their own dance style they perform? Wouldn't this be considered flattery by imitation? Wouldn't it make more sense if one kind of performer took on another type of style to showcase it? Are you not preserving this as ignorant by you saying "OMG THATS SO IGNORANT".
Its a harmless dance. They didn't degrade any of their culture by dancing.
@trueblue4686 seriously? they aren't just dancing, this is an imitation of the aboriginals done on purpose, and a poor one at that. do you actually expect the culture to be all peachy about it? again, it's easy for you to say it's okay and harmless because you're not from the same culture. this dance was stereo typical, the moves represented simple minded people, and don't even get me started on the costumes and makeup.
@trueblue4686 1) get the damn spelling right (ironic that you were claiming me as ignorant) and 2) no, I'm not. but it doesn't take much too much of the noodles to use common sense, a little research, and a bit of 'put yourself in their shoes' to see why they would be angry.
@trueblue4686 Why must one have spoken to one, hm? Just do the proper research, see how the dance really goes, and one should know. It's simple really.
@trueblue4686 the misconception of labeling it as a honor has been a problem for quit sometime. Who has the right to label it as a honor the aboriginies or society? If I was to bring a virgin ice skater the stage and cut off her head and call it an honoring to all ice skaters would you call my action flattering?
If you're not a white Protestant, you're allowed to call anything offensive and have it censored then banned. If you are a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, despite the fact that your culture civilized the world, saved entire races such as the Jews from Nazis, and created havens of prosperous liberty wherever it's runs things, you will vilified, then attacked and forbidden from responding.
@jkirk1626 first off every nation had civilization what the white Anglo -saxon protestants did was COLONIZE the world. And by this thing called colonization white anglo-saxon has a whole system runned to keep them superior to others. You can sit around and think racism only occurs in the marginal people in rural areas. But by that statement and the contents in this message board proves that racism is alive and kicking escpecially among the white race.
i dont think they meant any offence by this. they were just ignorant. but still, they should have done better research and if they couldnt come to completely understand it, they shouldnt have done this.
Hmmm, yah yah - they should have come our dressed as Jesus and Mary Magdalene - and did a routine to Sympathy For The Devil by the Rolling Stones. That would have been a lot more entertaining since - as an indigenous person - I wouldn't find that offensive at all...
Hmmm...yah they should have come out dressed as Jesus and Mary Magdalene....and did a routine to Sympathy For The Devil by the Rolling Stones. I would have found that a LOT more entertaining since - as an indigenous person - I wouldn't find that offensive at all...
You see.....it would NOT have been offensive had they done some research and showed the dance video to some Australians etc.....It always a god idea to show such dances in advance to the ppl concerned so that its taken in positive spirit!
@FSAssynt its because they didnt think of even researching the anything about australian aboriginal culture... the music isnt even from australia it just a song by song uk pop singer with some bits of digeridoo stuck in... ii actually have an article written by an indigenous australian on why it is offensive and be australian myself i think is horibble i mean if they had researched or asked im sure it wouldnt be such a big thing
@Fridaey13txhOktober actually the only reason why any Indigenous culture was screwed over was because of the infectious disease brought over by the DAMN DIRTY EUROPEANS. On top of that the papa bulls by Pope Nicholas V. With their goal of starting a Christian European empire power because of the resources being degraded in Europe that was on the verge of becoming bankrupt. Aparantly you need more basic history because you are seeiming quit retarded.
mylabonte, WRONG CONTINENT hahahah! Keep on to that unwarranbted self-importance, you´d rather sell your soul, if you had any, than give upp white technology.
@Fridaey13txhOktober wrong continent....Indigenous people live on every continent. And white technology was only able to advance at the hands of minorities so to label technology as belonging to a single race is a fallacy on your part. What about the other non-white countires that had technology? And technology advances it doesn't mean i still can't decolonize.
@Fridaey13txhOktober you trying to dumb me down is impossible yes there are living forces that are in anartica that can be labeled indigenous if you want to be so god damn politically incorrect....and yes since minoirites been here on america since day one and technology has advance i can say that minorities have had impact on todays technology....and you are a idiot that can't tell left from right
@Fridaey13txhOktober sorry i dont fuck with kilos here in America we deal with lbs and that kind of shit....and your dumb little cute statement had nothing to do with proving me wrong so instead of insulting with words that have no meaning or associating with me you should come up with valid facts to prove my statements wrong.....but hey nice true that whole kilo thing was cute
Respond to this video... oh and i dont sniff...it may shock you but yes there are people out there who don't do drugs....just because your a crack baby don't mean everyone is
@Fridaey13txhOktober woah "emotional faggots"...the most depressing thing is that there are 5 people who agree with your narrow minded point of view...
@mylabonte Rather than just regurgitating comments you hear, explain what you mean by the white technology comment and your interpretation of technology, the computer your using for instance, the internet in general? Your blanket statement on race are, miserable and strange.
@bellynda1 i don't need to be so fucking correct....technology is technology your able to use something in order to advance or make life easier....the technology the whites brought over from europe to america was able to advance as much as it has (IN AMERICA) because of the contributions of all minoirites....i am not saying whites would have not advanced just more slowly if they didn't have such opposition
In my AP English class, we studied this as part of our representation of culture in the media unit. The reasons that this video could be seen as offensive, although obviously not meant to be such, is because the dance, costume, and song used do not have much to do with authentic aussie aboriginal culture. Because of this, those who do not know much about the real culture will gain false impressions and form stereotypes based off of this being the only knowledge they have of aboriginal culture.
no leaders where consulted and they admitted they got the dance from youtube.....yea some extensive research.....and the may not have been offensive but they were....to a lot of INDIGENOUS PEOPLE. and only the offenders can label the offense.
So then you're an offender, b/c you are labelling the offense. Just b/c YOU weren't consulted about the dance doesn't mean they didn't consult any leaders or tribe members.
@italianjen29 first off they didn;t consult tribal leaders plain and simple no tribal LEADERS ever came foward and said they got permission....they SAID they got the dance from YOUTUBE from traditional aborigines....they never consulted them they just mocked them.....and yes i was offended there for i can label the offense....sorry i meant to say the offended are the ones that can label the offense
@italianjen29 NO i am offended so I am allowed to label the offense. And once again they never consulted the aborigines to deem if the dance was offensive or not. There PR might have asked someone who knew someone who blew someone if these russians can do this dance but it don't mean the consulted the true owners of this dance.
@italianjen29 you actually want me to believe that two white skaters that proably spend months of practicing went all the way to australia to ask the culture if they can use their dance. I don't think so.
@mylabonte "Oppressed by civilization"? You do realize the colonial sentiments inherent in that formulation do you? The very classification of 'indigenous' is a colonial polemic, implying a distinction between civlized and indigenous peoples. It seems you don't practice what you preach. Also, less hyperbole please; accusing people of a lack of brain capacity is neither relevant nor helpful.
Indigeneous certainly does not imply non-civilized or is opposed to it! Even racists praise the pre-colonial indigenous civilizations like the Aztec Maya and Inca. Just because everyone is "indigenous" to somewhere doesnt mean it is meaningless. It obviously means a lot to Native Americans because without it there would be little else to protect their rights. Indigenous only has meaning in context to describe a relationship. Which is by definition a *colonial* one.
@allinllachu As far as praising' indigenous cultures goes, i think you have a slight misunderstanding. Although the idea of the 'noble savage' is archetypal in western consciousness, this idea is not positive but actually denies those peoples a history: they are the 'indigenous culture' of a specific area; something which is ofcourse utter rubbish. Empires rise and fall in unlettered societies as much as in modern ones and their (oral) literature, art and technology change as much as ours.
you make a good point about how indigenous people have been denied their history and culture. then see this performance representation is offensive since it reiterates again the stereotypes and misrepresentations of their culture. the context of the performance itself, the costume, movement vocabulary, and even musical choice reflect a rather uninformed notion of aboriginal culture. the routine is hodgepodge of diff. "indigenous cultures" from native american, to south indian. it doesnt work.
I think a lot of times people don't like to see their culture represented in a generic way. Also, there were a few things not shown (such as leading her around by her ponytail) that could have been interpereted as showing Aboriginal culture as "barbaric." Overall, though, the theme is to be blamed - it was "folk dances" or something like that, which has to be translated into another medium (ice skating). The whole thing was blown out of proportion.
it's offensive because your culture like all Indigenous cultures have been oppressed by the colonizers. And know you have "non-Indigenous" people portraying your culture as they see fit. Yes they should have consulted and aboriginal medicine man or notable traditional leader to get permission. I agree with andichan04 that what is to blame is the theme. But ONE THING ONLY THE OFFENDERS CAN LABEL THE OFFENSE. If your not offended then ask someone who is offended why, just like you did
can't wait to see the hard done by Aboriginals make the other countries say sorry, pmsl the worst day in Australian history when kevin crudd became PM.
AYEJAY666 you forgot about the carton of winnie blues under the arm as well.
It's OK for your culture to make fun of other cultures , try a youtube search for Aboriginal Greek Dance maybe the abo's need to say SORRY in case they offened someone who is Greek, oh thats right your hard done by aboriginies who don't have to say sorry for anything
K what is even more pathetic is that you clicked on the video and actually watched it. And yhen you have to put your ignorant two cents in. It's not crying around because they are sensitive it's called pointing out injustices committed by ignorant people. I am a grown women and fighting for basic human rights is what I do for a living, I love doing it and never regret a day in my life. Thats more I can say for you. You have problems if you get off on wanting insensitive people to suck your dick.
Sure in the closing BC ceremonies Canada can "...included a tongue-in-cheek revue of Canadian icons and symbols, featuring singing-and-dancing Mounties, tabletop hockey players, dancing canoes and flying moose and beavers.Canadian actors -- including William Shatner and Michael J. Fox -- made fun of national stereotypes."
But these athlete-artists can't use Aboriginal choreography?
I call bullshit on racist statements. Get over it. There are more important things to be upset over.
I guess they are saying that each movement in their aboriginal culture has specific meaning. I guess the designer for this piece of ice dancing doesn't really consider about the actual meaning behind the movement.
ok...not to disagree, but two things are wrong here:
1. you stressed the wrong word by putting "only" in capitals, the words you should have stressed was "offenders"
2. you say: "only the offenders" but just above "Only people offended can label the offense", which is contradictory. make your mind up mate...geez...
@Gottlichesalitter it is because you are a folk theoirst...which in its own is racist because you uphold white virtue even though you may not be white.
because it bears absolutely no resemblance to aboriginal culture...to say that it does is ignorant and culturally insensitive...they seriously could have just jumped on the internet for like 5 minutes to see that this is completely wrong but instead they've made them look like some sort of aztec/maori amalgam...totally un-aboriginal
I don't think they meant to be offensive or mean or mocking. But neither did the blackface skit on Red Faces.
The point is that people have taken offense, including the people they are supposedly paying homage to, and they have continued on anyway. It seems insensitive.
They also don't seem to understand Aboriginal people or culture enough to see why this would cause them distress and why they should have been consulted on this.
only the offenders can label the offense. You don't understand and never will because you have a western civilization way of thinking and this injustice matter goes way beyond your brain capability.
i just browsed through all of the comments cuz you replied and it made me check back on what i wrote. you have said 'only the offenders can label the offense' many many times to other comments like mine. ok, but that doesnt make us understand this situation any better, so stop pretending like youre so smart. and as for commenting on my brain capability when wanting to know what the issue is, you are a very ignorant person yourself. i just asked a simple question. get over it.
The skaters weren't trying to be offensive. They were trying to showcase the beauty of tribal dances. And actually, many of the tribes the russian team spoke with (to research the dances) fully supported what they put together.
@italianjen29 the skaters may not have been trying to be offensive but the whole theme was just calling for trouble. And trust me a lot of tribes spoke out against the dance I haven't heard of one that supported it and i lived among the aborigines and have many friends in that region. The only ones who proably support it are what we call APPLES red on the outside and white on the inside.
@roxyroxy34 It's offensive because the pair obviously have done no research. Doesn't look like aboriginal dance, looks like they've mixed up half their things with Maori culture (New Zealand, not Australia)..
At one point he drags her around by her hair.. O.o (check out 1:40)..
The Aussies were fine with singers with black face and the like. Now they get insulted. You can't have it both ways. You can't say it is just a joke when it comes to African Americans but then get insulted when Europeans dress up as native Aussies.
You don't know what you're talking about. "The Aussies were fine with singers with black face and the like". Were we? Which Aussies? Australians aren't just one big mob of like-minded people. That was a big controversy here, and it couldn't have been a controversy if people weren't divided over it.
You'll find the people here who were fine with blackface don't care about this, and the people who found blackface distasteful, felt this was wrong too. Indigenous Australians especially.
yes, he doesn't know what he was talking about... actually aboriginal people aren't wholey just based on australia. aboriginal ARE actually natives also in the sense
I still say what about the hula hoop? Was that offensive? The Hula dance has some kind of meaning to it. Mediocrity always has to raise its ugly head.......
I really don't see what's offensive about this. I mean, I'm not impressed. It's cheap, unimaginative and shows a clear lack of understanding of aboriginal dance and culture. They obviously haven't done much more research than watch Crocodile Dundee a couple of times. But offensive? I just think it's really rich for some people to cry foul over something like this, whilst being perfectly happy to sit back and watch other ice skaters do exactly the same to a bucketload of other cultures.
If you are not of the culture you cannot decide what is offensive or not...they claim to honor the aboriginal group but if the honree does not feel honored can it be called that. I am native american and this is a big debate when it comes to mascots. It doesnt matter if some people say its ok if the majority disagrees then STOP DOING IT. If it offends this group then they shouldnt of done it.

Remorselesslymine 1 year ago
those who are doubtful as to the offensive nature of this dance/ performance, should indulge in a little reading and study of Indigenous Australian culture and history. Not the sort you find in the education curriculum or those written from a colonialist point of view, but histories and stories written by Indigenous Australians! Then and only then should you comment on whether this was offensive or not.

seriously. all you people saying "i don't see how this is offensive" obviously aren't australian aboriginals. it's easy for you to say it's not offensive because it's not your culture. this dance is filled with stereotypical moves making the culture come off as simple minded and uncivilized. it's like watching children stretching their eyes to appear asian, they aren't aware that it's wrong 'cause their kids, they don't know any better. this pair should have known better. period.
pinto89100 1 year ago 2
@pinto89100 They're Russian, how should they have known better?
trueblue4686 1 year ago
@trueblue4686 if they didn't know any better, then they should have done some research. it was pure ignorance. sometimes you just have to use your freaking noodles before you do something. they obviously didn't, and being russian doesn't excuse them.
pinto89100 1 year ago
@pinto89100 Isn't ice skating technically a dance style? Also, don't the Aborigines have their own dance style they perform? Wouldn't this be considered flattery by imitation? Wouldn't it make more sense if one kind of performer took on another type of style to showcase it? Are you not preserving this as ignorant by you saying "OMG THATS SO IGNORANT".
Its a harmless dance. They didn't degrade any of their culture by dancing.
trueblue4686 1 year ago
@trueblue4686 seriously? they aren't just dancing, this is an imitation of the aboriginals done on purpose, and a poor one at that. do you actually expect the culture to be all peachy about it? again, it's easy for you to say it's okay and harmless because you're not from the same culture. this dance was stereo typical, the moves represented simple minded people, and don't even get me started on the costumes and makeup.
pinto89100 1 year ago
@pinto89100 So you're Aborigines?
trueblue4686 1 year ago
@trueblue4686 1) get the damn spelling right (ironic that you were claiming me as ignorant) and 2) no, I'm not. but it doesn't take much too much of the noodles to use common sense, a little research, and a bit of 'put yourself in their shoes' to see why they would be angry.
pinto89100 1 year ago
@pinto89100 So you put yourself in their shoes, but have you ever spoken with an Aboriginal?
trueblue4686 1 year ago
@trueblue4686 Why must one have spoken to one, hm? Just do the proper research, see how the dance really goes, and one should know. It's simple really.
pinto89100 1 year ago
@trueblue4686 the misconception of labeling it as a honor has been a problem for quit sometime. Who has the right to label it as a honor the aboriginies or society? If I was to bring a virgin ice skater the stage and cut off her head and call it an honoring to all ice skaters would you call my action flattering?

If you're not a white Protestant, you're allowed to call anything offensive and have it censored then banned. If you are a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, despite the fact that your culture civilized the world, saved entire races such as the Jews from Nazis, and created havens of prosperous liberty wherever it's runs things, you will vilified, then attacked and forbidden from responding.
jkirk1626 1 year ago
@jkirk1626 first off every nation had civilization what the white Anglo -saxon protestants did was COLONIZE the world. And by this thing called colonization white anglo-saxon has a whole system runned to keep them superior to others. You can sit around and think racism only occurs in the marginal people in rural areas. But by that statement and the contents in this message board proves that racism is alive and kicking escpecially among the white race.

@bellynda1 i don't need to be so fucking correct....technology is technology your able to use something in order to advance or make life easier....the technology the whites brought over from europe to america was able to advance as much as it has (IN AMERICA) because of the contributions of all minoirites....i am not saying whites would have not advanced just more slowly if they didn't have such opposition
mylabonte 1 year ago
In my AP English class, we studied this as part of our representation of culture in the media unit. The reasons that this video could be seen as offensive, although obviously not meant to be such, is because the dance, costume, and song used do not have much to do with authentic aussie aboriginal culture. Because of this, those who do not know much about the real culture will gain false impressions and form stereotypes based off of this being the only knowledge they have of aboriginal culture.

mylabonte 1 year ago
So then you're an offender, b/c you are labelling the offense. Just b/c YOU weren't consulted about the dance doesn't mean they didn't consult any leaders or tribe members.
italianjen29 1 year ago 7
@italianjen29 first off they didn;t consult tribal leaders plain and simple no tribal LEADERS ever came foward and said they got permission....they SAID they got the dance from YOUTUBE from traditional aborigines....they never consulted them they just mocked them.....and yes i was offended there for i can label the offense....sorry i meant to say the offended are the ones that can label the offense
mylabonte 1 year ago
@italianjen29 NO i am offended so I am allowed to label the offense. And once again they never consulted the aborigines to deem if the dance was offensive or not. There PR might have asked someone who knew someone who blew someone if these russians can do this dance but it don't mean the consulted the true owners of this dance.
mylabonte 1 year ago

@italianjen29 you actually want me to believe that two white skaters that proably spend months of practicing went all the way to australia to ask the culture if they can use their dance. I don't think so.
mylabonte 1 year ago
Only people offended can label the offense. You don't with the same eyes as Indigenous people or people oppressed by civilization.
mylabonte 2 years ago
@mylabonte "Oppressed by civilization"? You do realize the colonial sentiments inherent in that formulation do you? The very classification of 'indigenous' is a colonial polemic, implying a distinction between civlized and indigenous peoples. It seems you don't practice what you preach. Also, less hyperbole please; accusing people of a lack of brain capacity is neither relevant nor helpful.
Gottlichesalitter 2 years ago 2
Indigeneous certainly does not imply non-civilized or is opposed to it! Even racists praise the pre-colonial indigenous civilizations like the Aztec Maya and Inca. Just because everyone is "indigenous" to somewhere doesnt mean it is meaningless. It obviously means a lot to Native Americans because without it there would be little else to protect their rights. Indigenous only has meaning in context to describe a relationship. Which is by definition a *colonial* one.
allinllachu 1 year ago
@allinllachu As far as praising' indigenous cultures goes, i think you have a slight misunderstanding. Although the idea of the 'noble savage' is archetypal in western consciousness, this idea is not positive but actually denies those peoples a history: they are the 'indigenous culture' of a specific area; something which is ofcourse utter rubbish. Empires rise and fall in unlettered societies as much as in modern ones and their (oral) literature, art and technology change as much as ours.
Gottlichesalitter 1 year ago
you make a good point about how indigenous people have been denied their history and culture. then see this performance representation is offensive since it reiterates again the stereotypes and misrepresentations of their culture. the context of the performance itself, the costume, movement vocabulary, and even musical choice reflect a rather uninformed notion of aboriginal culture. the routine is hodgepodge of diff.

Andichan04 2 years ago
allright thanks for that man.
333onlyhalfbad 2 years ago
it's offensive because your culture like all Indigenous cultures have been oppressed by the colonizers.

It makes a mockery of a culture.

@italianjen29 the skaters may not have been trying to be offensive but the whole theme was just calling for trouble.
