  • Kent Nagano should do a shampoo commercial.

  • I think she messed up with her bow during the beginning

  • Why does the composer wear his hair like a Japanese schoolgirl?

  • There has no Natalie Zhu in the concert, the condustor looks like Ken Nagano...

  • Amazing.

  • A lot of people assume that Heifetz was the best. He WAS very good, but I have listened to a lot of Hahn's recordings and some of Heifetz' and I significantly prefer Hahn's. For sure she is technically better. Also I think her interpretations are better, although his are more dramatic. From what I do know about her, I don't know her but have known people who knew her in school, she is a MUCH better person.

  • @MrHbc3 I don't think you can say she is technically better than Heifetz. The difference in sound quality between the two is due to recording quality. I prefer Hahn and Heifetz for different compositions, as their personalities complement certain composers' (although Hahn wins out most of the time). Saint-Saens' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso? Heifetz. Stravinksy's Violin Concerto? Hahn.

  • IIINNNCCRREEDDIIBBLLEE!!!

  • The early part of this sounds a bit like the theme from the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series. It's not the same but I wonder if that was influenced by this?

  • just heard this today and it's already one of my favorite violin concertos :)

  • @wgj7gec me too

  • I love the combination of Berliner Philharmoniker and Hilary Hahn. :)

  • Can anyone say what violin Ms.Hahn may use?

  • @outoftunefiddler Her violin is an 1864 copy of Paganini's 'Cannone' made by Vuillaume. Hahn uses bows by American bow maker Isaac Salchow and French bow makers Emile Ouchard, Paul Jombar, and Emil Miquel.[2] As for her strings, she uses Dominants[2] for the A (aluminum wound), D and G (silver wound) and uses a Pirastro Gold Label Steel E. (from Wikipedia)

  • @outoftunefiddler

Hilary Hahn plays an Vuillaume of 1864.

  • The Phillipe Quint version, here, is better than Hahn's.....Though there are only two movements.....

  • I love how she looks around appreciatively at the orchestra when they have their moments without her. So respectful.

  • She is so cute!!!!!!!

  • my fourth finger hurts when I see 7:12

    haha

    SHE'S THE BEST!!!!!!

  • beautiful

  • the score is hear: /watch?v=_vniCuX5eak&feature=fvsr

  • Why,please, is Natalie Zhu wearing this attractive set of tails and looking strangely like Kent Nagano..?

  • @outoftunefiddler Now, now...let's not be rude, shall we. (Although, I must admit, your comment is very funny!)

  • This is a very strange composition, but she plays very well nonetheless. I have to wonder how she feels about this funky modern stuff, though...

  • @kzrssk

She recently recorded a new violin concerto by Jennifer Higdon, so she must like it.

  • @kzrssk You know, I am sixty-five (65) years old. I have always (perhaps out of necessity?) thought of myself as a "Romantic".I did not know know of this Korngold VC until relatively recently. I do want to comment, here, that I think that Barry White is "funky" or even (Can I say the name?) Isaac Hayes has the funk goin', but in no case is Korngold at any time in this jewel "funky.

  • Terrific! I'm studying this concerto and it's unbelievably difficult, it has certain technical passages that I can't solve at the moment, but she does them incredibly naturally. Perfect. I prefer Heifetz interpretation, because I feel it nearer to the soundtrack mood that marks Korngold music, but Hilary Hahn's is also incredible, a precious gem...

  • @ThorgarManowar can u send me the score of this concerto please??

  • @agrandb i downloaded it from sheetmusic :) but i think it's also on wikipedia imslp

  • Thorgar: Look here at "Glenn Dicterow on Korngold's Violin Concerto" and enjoy

  • somebody get this girl a strad.

she deserves if over most of the people who own one.

  • @iamemod strads aren't all that.

  • @hymnofashes Depends on which one. The one that Perlman owns is one of the best, but there are plenty of Stradivaris that are just as good as Hahn's Vuillaume.

  • @hymnofashes heh! heh heh! heh eheh!! lol rotflmao!!!!

  • Absolutely fabulous. I will finally get to hear her live this weekend playing Tchaikovsky!

  • AHH I WOULD GIVE UP MY LEGS AND NECK MOVEMENT TO PLAY LIKE YOU!! O_O

  • it's funny how people have to compare a live performance of the korngold by hilary to recorded versions by other artists, but it is unfair to take a hilary recording and compare it to a live recording by another artist...anywho... i just love how cartoonish this sounds, she really brings about the character of this concerto, and it's composer.

  • What is prettier, her playing or her face? Can't answer, both divine IMO.

Bravo Bravo ...

  • why is she so good? its unfair :(

  • @hojin92 work.

  • I don't think thats her Vuillaume. The Vuillaume's pegs have carvings

  • the conductor is kent nagano NOT natalie zhu

  • Brilliant; As if Heifitz Soul was reimplanted in Hilary.

  • how old is she in this video??? she looks so young...

  • She's an amazing amazing violinist. However I feel french violins have a tendency to sound very thin, weak and robotic..She deserves a stradivarius...

  • @vlhere I respect your opinion, but I actually love the sound of Villaumes. I mean, listen to Josef Hassid, I believe he played a Villaume in all of his recordings, and his playing is incredibly dynamic, layered, and just plain beautiful. (Though he did play a Strad when Kreisler would lend him one)

  • Can't wait to hear this live at the Chicago Symphony in January 2011

  • Love Hilary, and yet another great one of her performances, but this music belongs in Disney World, with Daffy Duck and friends. Horrid.

  • i liked the stars...of course: wonderful korngold.

  • Love Hilary Hahn. Love her musical choices. Small example at :15 because of the slightly slower tempo she's able to accentuate the syncopation while plucking the strings ... much more effective than missing small points like this at faster tempi. BRAVO HILARY.

  • 4:47 John Williams moment!!

    Love this piece.

  • it's more like a Korngold moment, he did come first

  • @lais898 - hehe, I know Korngold came first really, but I can't really say 'Korngold moment' since that would be a bit pointless... :)

  • interesting comment. last night i attended a performance of this, and the conductor made a few remarks, in which he pointed out the debt owed korngold by williams.

  • There is not enought words...

  • Hilary Hahn,YOU ARE MY TOP FAVORITE VIOLINIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 6:59 I ♥ Horn ...even if he misses one note... its a hard part for the hornists!

    The Violin is brilliant :)

  • heifetz has nothing on this violinist!

  • Hi my name is Elizabeth Hahn and by anychance do you have any family in Texas / west Virginia

  • the youtube user is not hilary hahn...just letting you know.

  • Hilary Hahn is from Lexington, Virginia.

  • I love how Hilary looks as if she has never aged, and what a phenominon she is!

  • HQHQHQAHAHAHAHA

    eURPEAN MoZic is da best@!

  • Absolutely sublime playing by this wonderful violinist who like a musical alchemist turns 'corn into GOLD'! sd goh (malaysia)

  • @301250 i see what you did there

  • Almost, each movement was based on a theme from musical scores he composed for films while in Hollywood.

  • sounds like some Disney animie movie background music....Very playfullmusic...I lik it

  • This Movement, I believe was adapted from his film score "The prince and the pauper" (1937) so that's why it sounds like a movie :)

  • I love Korngold, his music is hardly ever played!

  • I actually prefer Gil Shaham's recording of this, but I guess you can't compare the two.

  • This is at Walt Disney Concert Hall huh!!! awesomeness..i just had my orchestra rehearse there today (we have a concert on sunday there) and that place is the most amazing concert hall i've played in. On the piece, i feel like she has more fun in it than other ppl, just my 2 cents...and my experience of the day haha

  • this is the philharmonie in berlin mate

  • lol my bad xD i got over-excited that it was "in disney hall" haha after a 2nd look i was like "o snap its not..."

  • Bravo! Excellent performance!

This concerto is very technically demanding; her execution is flawless.

Also, very musical in this performance, more emotion than I've seen in other videos.

I think she's only like 30; think about what she'll be doing in ten years!

  • This is my favorite movement from Korngold's violin concerto.

  • bravo! excellent performance!

on a side note, every time i hear this movement i think of the movie feivel goes west! anyone else see it? :P

  • Indeed she's very musical, that's what I like about her, not afraid to break certain standards if she has to, she made the barber 3rd faster than any recording to make it cooler, she fixed the wild Stravinsky 3rd movement, and now I like the way she slowed down at 6:00 of this concerto. I like how that part was clearly defined, all other performances I listened to were just so fast i didn't hear how beautiful that part was.

  • Hahn´s just so musical,isn´t she?

  • kavakos-too fast

    mutter-too fast and very scratchy

    hahn-more musical but slightly slower

  • do u actually realise what u say? it s like a critic with any professional point of view made by an amateur maybe frustrated violinist

  • O.O OMG!

  • She is Heifetz in woman form

  • i don't know if its the microphone or what.. but her sound is just piercing.. phenomenal

  • what a killer cello section....oo and hilary is perfect as usual

  • is there a such thing as love at first sight?

    after this i say yes:}

  • one other thing. anybody seen her last rose of summer video? look it up here on youtube. i think its even more incredible than this. its like theres nothing, absolutely nothing, she cant do perfectly.

  • *breathless* *jaw at the floor* *adoration* i hope to god i can play like her one day.

  • She totally nails it and looks completely nonchalant. ^__^

  • Marvelous! Brava, Hilary!

  • stunning!

  • This girl is splendid. Her generous and wonderful personality comes through in her interpretation. Such dedication and virtuosity should only be rewarded. And something else: Rozendent, you are a bloody idiot! I hope you are not a musician...because you don't stand a chance, if this is your attitude.

  • Beautifully controlled, expressive and such a clear tone.

  • She is so naturally, without anything stress moments..Just love it:)

  • It's a great performance, played to perfection by Hahn. The only thing is that it is too fast for my taste. Especially the Galop Theme should be more pesante, it doesn't fully reflect Korngold's unique sound. For this reason I slightly prefer Shaham's performance over Hahn's, that one is a bit more laid-back but gives also the orchestra a bit more opportunities to shine.

  • It's actually not the fastest expression:) Listen to Anne-Sophie Mutter's version and it's so fast that it's if she skipped certain notes. But no offense to Mutter. It's just a different interpretation.

  • What control! What lyricism!

This is Hahn at her best. Nobody can play this song better than this.

  • I like to see somebody try to sing that.

  • lol

  • find some words set it and I'll try

  • I need to discovered WHY?!I don't like her...I have hard work, because is correct and good... finally I can't solved this..,

  • That's totally fine! I started appreciating Ashkenazy when I found what was at first disturbing me in his playing!

  • I wish I was there to hear her. This concerto is awesome! Hilary is awesome too!

  • well, she is usually sounds better than this (in terms of tone). I really don't care much for this particular performance. She has a very contemporary style of musicianship but she is quite amazing with technique. I don't like her musicianship in general and with this performance she sounds scratchy and . . .just nothing special. haha so I guess I don't know how to answer your question

  • Does any one know who are the makers of her violin and bow? They are great instruments!!!

  • Korngold wrote this encouraged by Heifetz, probably with some sort of consultation.

It was dedicated to the widow of Gustav Mahler (her name was Alma).

  • Actually, Korngold wrote this concerto at the behest of Huberman, who kept bugging him to write a violin concerto over a period of several years. Every time they saw each other, Huberman would go, "So Erich, where's my piece?" Unfortunately, when Korngold finally got around to writing the piece, Huberman had died. Huberman was himself an incredible violinist who once famously left Brahms stunned in a performance of the composer's violin concerto.

  • So ? In my Heifetz-version CD there is the story of the concert made for Heifetz; also a photograph, where Korngold sits on the piano, Heif. looking over his shoulder and pointing something with the bow ...

    Doesn't really matter, anyhow ...

  • The Huberman story can be found in any one of the Korngold biographies. The concerto was not written for Heifetz, though Heifetz was the violinist who ultimately premiered the piece. Korngold actually did a reading with another violinist first, but this other individual found the concerto so difficult that he could barely play it at all, which, for a time, made Korngold afraid that he had made the solo part impossible and would have to go back and rewrite it. Then Heifetz saved the day.

  • for me, this playful movement shouldn't be taken too seriously/sincerely. i'd take a tempo that lets you throw the bow and have fun! i enjoyed kavakos' renditon...

  • You poor sad talentless sod. All you can do is heap scorn on this young woman who has accomplished so much. People like you disgust me.

  • I am referring to zec2006 of course. It does not matter how much better Kavakos or Perlman can play this work, all that matters is that Hahn does a marvelous job. I am in awe of such talent.

  • damn...no wonder everybody thinks classical music fans are snobs...

  • Do you even play violin enough to be saying all these HORRIBLE things about Hilary Hahn? There not nice comments at all.

  • Fair enough.

  • I'm pretty sure the argument here's not whether she's better than anyone or not, but whether you respect "music interpretation". Sure you can say Heifetz's way far better than Hahn. But honestly everyone has his own standard to judge a musician, just like most say Strad violins sound better than any other. But there's no objective evidences to prove at all.

  • I've listened to A.S. Mutter's version and frankly speaking, I don't like it. But I wouldn't say it's rubbish, but rather it's just a different interpretation that's not to my taste. Afterall they all have their own input to the performance, whether you like it or not. I'd just feel it's ridiculous to make any judgement simply because Hahn's version didn't touch you but someone else, and only than you feel those touched are idiots and don't understand music.

  • Way to go, asanjurm the cork sniffer. All claims and no specific evidence or support.

  • ok chump! i don't care your crap because you maybe are deaf or your brain is too small so you can't think that there's a lot of people that plays better than her... I'm a proud musician not a moron that loves to be satisfied whit the first thing that oyu hear. You should expand your listenings... Heifetz is still god over those "humans"

  • Then listen to Heifretz. Nobody's forcing you to listen to Hilary Hann if you don't like her, right? Some people actually like HER (She is by no means my favorite btw).

  • It kinda bugs me when people are always like "listen to Heifetz". Yeah he was like violin god but his time is over and people should be open to new artists and there are more great violinists of the 20th century than just Heifetz, but I do agree that this was a very uninspiring performance and hilary, in my opinion, still has to have more mature musicianship. you can hear that she is very young by listening to pretty much any of her recordings/performances/etc

  • I liked this version. You could actually hear the notes. Some violinists run through it to show how clever their technique is.

  • sorry, but kavakos's recording of this blows hilary's out of the water

  • you are right.. I AM ITALIAN and "allegro ASSAI vivace" means very very fast! The right tempos are given By Heifetz and the marvellous rendition of Kavakos and Mutter! listen to those and you will find a true allegro ASSAI vivace ;-)

  • i mean why do they like to keep so much hair, waving it around doesn't it get in the way, doesn't it bug them?

  • why do asian conductors have so much hair!

  • That's a pretty bold statement, robey. By the way, the technique that she brings to the music is what makes it actually sound how it should.

  • I actually didn't mean to post that comment. I thought I discarded it. You're right, it's pretty harsh. But I really must say that not just this performance, but all performances of hers, I find really dry. I know that I am in the minority there, certainly. But for me there is just no comparison between this performance and say, Kavakos'.

  • is there a glitch at 1:47?

  • Just because Hilary plays this slower, does not mean Kavakos is better. Also, remember that she probably has to ability to play this twice as fast.

  • Yes, Kavakos is great! But I like Hahn's relaxed tempo. It may not be quite as exciting but it's very lyrical and fantasia-like, telling a story with her playing.

  • Listen to Kavakos Korngold and we'll talk again later which is the best recording. If you don't know it is posted at youtube.

  • eres la mejor del mundo

  • WoW!!! Thanks for posting! Amazing!

  • Thanks.

  • I think the conductor is Kent Nagano

  • Yes, he is Kent Nagano alright! Great conductor. I've seen him a lot!!!

  • Awsome!! conductor?

  • wonderful!!!

  • Good, but imagine how it must have sounded when Heifetz premiered it.

  • Yeah, he and Mutter, in my opinion, are the best recordings. Hahn is so stiff, but she is so technical. Mutter and Heifetz bring a sexiness and emotional quality to this concerto like not other.

  • You have to listen to Kavakos and we will talk again later which one is the best recording. If you don't know it is posted on youtube.

  • superhuman.
