  • I said, Oi, Bradfield....No! You may be able rock out with your trio from the valleys, but your brand of clash and slash style rock just doesn't quite cut it in comparison to Heatons gravelly, raw vocal delivery! You sound weak and like you are struggling with the punchiness of the song! Stick to Emptying petrol from Motorcycles in future!

  • WONDERFUL!!!

  • amazing voice james!

  • so unusual it works GREAT

  • @TUUK2006 What don't you like about his voice?

  • lol at Paul Heaton at the end "That last one were fucking brilliant"

  • I love James Bradfield but this does nothing to change my opinion of Beautiful South - they are fucking awful.

  • @manicsforever Whatever.

  • I think its awful!

  • an odd mix on paper - like having Kaka and ronaldo on the same side - but works brilliantly!!!

  • an inspired idea of one of the best beautiful south songs. should of gone the whole hog and made it more "rock"

  • still loving this after all this time

  • he has got a brilliant voice tho

  • He's in pain at 2.04

  • JDB does what he always does and tries to put his mark on cover versions.

    Fair play to him.

Oh and I have seen TBS over a dozen times and I think it's a good live version.

  • Bless Heaton and his f*cking compliments!

  • love that you posted this....I have all these old clips on a video somewhere....is making me nostalgic.....

  • Do you? Could you upload them? Please? That'd be great!

  • JDB can do no wrong

  • wat show was this on?

  • twas on a beautiful south special of the jools holland show;)

  • Song to low in key for Mr JB.

  • This clip looks quite old...?

  • Guessing it was from EMG or this is my truth era cos for a brief time then he seemed to play fenders live but went back to Les Paul's know your enemy

  • This unusual combination highlights firstly what a great song this is and secondly what a great singer James is, the quintessential English band with a great Welsh singer!

  • @broomybank Just song great musicians making music. Nothing to do with lines on a map.

  • Class, well done for putting it on.

    beautiful stuff.

    Hail,Hail

  • I remember watching this when it was on tv ages ago and was so chuffed cos my two fave bands at the time were the Manics and Beautiful South. James' voice fits this song so well, would love to hear himsing more of theirs.

  • I lubs James.

Much better now he has shed the tonnage.

  • James Dean Bradfield = Best voice ever

  • James Dean Bradfield's voice is one of the most treasured possessions on this planet.

  • james is also very entertaning! such a powerful loud voice he has! i'd tap him! lol!

the woman and man are cool too! :)

  • @icecreamscuseme We're not nearly that hard up yet, I hope.

  • @icecreamscuseme It sure is, and ive meet him. They say dont meet your hereos but he is a fantastic down to earth bloke and gave me and my girlfriend free passes to the gig that night. LONG LIVE THE MANICS!

  • Oh man the beautiful south were about to sleep...James ROCKS

  • JDB....A Legend.

  • Prefer PAUL HEATON cos when he sings it he knows all about 'ole red eyes'

  • wow who ever posted that on u tube needs a fuckin knighthood people get in there aka the origanal manchester madhead oh frm bury !!!!!!!!!!!!!! bury fc look out 4 them they rock 4 a shit team hahahaha

  • Was a half decent attempt at doing this song differently, deffo not my cuppa T - preferred the original.

I think the fact that he was trying to go a bit rocky yet the rest of the band kept it original sorta killed it for me. Nice try though!

  • hey rich lad get some rythem man u will see TBS rock so do the manics!!!! chill man chill hahahahaha manchester madhead ooohhhhh frm bezza ??? bury fc >>richie

  • hehe 'get some rythem', check my vids son I got sum geeza.

Just my opinion bud, i love both the TBH and Manics. Just didnt float me boat thats all. ; )

  • JDB is a great singer... all you need to do is listen to Motorcycle Emptiness to hear that but this song really doesn't suit his voice... especially when he kept singing in falsetto

  • ah that was lovely. Nice to see two of the Britain's best bands joining together to have a bit of fun.

  • How can ANYBODY say that JDB can't sing? He's the best in the country ffs!

    Legend!

  • jdb looks so gorgeous with short hair :)

    great song. great performance.

  • hah, youre so wrong.

  • Minedarea

Um ... the Manic Street Preachers grew up knowing each other. I'm interested to know what you're definition of a "bad musician" is. Is it someone who lacks technical ability? Or is it someone who writes music that just isn't your cup of tea?

The Beautiful South aren't really my cup of tea musically, but that doesn't mean I can't recognise that they are good musicians. Also I'd be interested to know what part of the Manics vast and extremely varied back catalogue you object to.

  • Who in the nineties, who was relevant was a better guitarist than James Bean Bradfield? I've gotta hear this. If you think James Dean Bradfield is a bad musician then you obviously know nothing about writing or performing music. I think your silence to the people who have argued with you speaks volumes

  • Love the Manics... not as much as the Beautiful South but... 90's... better guitarist than James Dean Bradfield?

    John Squire - easily.

  • Nope.

The album version of You Love Us proves James' guitar credentials...he's the best :)

  • I Am The Resurrection.

  • Motorcycle Emptiness

  • How is that better?

    I can play that..

    If we must...

    Love Spreads

  • James has a simply stunning voice compared to any1 ever

  • insanedudephil (2 weeks ago) hit the fuckin nail on the head!!!

if it was the same all the time music would fuckin shit!! great version live for the moment dudes!!!

  • six words = NOT A PATCH ON THE ORIGINAL!

  • I think the fact that Paul Heaton says"That last one were fucking brilliant"resolves any arguments!I don't see how 2bands wanting to have fun and try something different can cause so many people 2 argue?!I guess this is why music is going stale, because if anyone trys anything different, the public immidatly judge it. Just listen, don't think of the original, don't think wether you like the band or the image, just listen thats what music is all about.Don't argue..listen.

  • shouty crap version

  • viva la manics

  • I thought I was having a hallucination - two of my favourite bands somehow merged for one song - what a blast !!!:-)))

  • Ah like the Manic laddie.... But Heaton is the man for this tune.

  • what are you talking about? JDB has one of the best live voices I've ever heard.

  • Maybe james doesn't suit the song, but at least he brings a bit of life to teh performance!

    Schowan JAMES YOU LEDGE!

  • JDB...what a voice!

  • ME THINKS ITS ROCKING

    :)

  • Oh my god he cant sing no one is better than Heaton and Hemingway they kick arse

  • who the hell is this guy he has killed a good song

  • James dean Bradfield From The Manics.. A FUCKING LEGEND

  • heaton obviously has a better voice, but this version isnt too bad...

  • Erm... he crucified the song then left it in the middle of the desert to rot. I bet the four stars are from people who haven't heard the brilliant original. Philistines..

  • james d b is a legend,one of the uks best voices,especailly live

  • hehe look at Jacqui Abbott in this video. seems a bit bored but bless her, only 6 seconds of vocals throughout the song.

I like this version, love JDB. it's different! if Paul Heaton liked it then it cant have been too bad!

  • That guy totally trashed this tune

  • what year was this?

  • my two favourite bands (well part of one) together!!

    I love em both!!

  • i agree with anteat

  • How dare anyone slag JDB off! You should be ashamed, he's a living legend.

  • james makes this song worth listening to

  • god that was horrible ,leave the singing to the south

  • these comments are funny....zing!

  • Nice to hear some energy in a Beautiful South song. never woulda thunk their fans could be so militant though. Thought they were all woolly jumper wearing middle aged people who kept poodles and drank darjeeling. My mistake! Viva la revolucion you crazy ticking time-bombs!

(Oh, Caledonianmacbrayne1, I think you should take a bit more time over your typing. 'Fowl' refers to game birds, and 'massacred' is spelt just like that.)

    Peace.

  • haha cheers lol!!

  • To all of you who slagged this off - I pity you, you must be tone deaf and ignorant...

  • Don'y be stupid, this bloke just masicared an amazing song!

Leave it to a pro for Gods sake!!

  • I rest my case...

    Retard.

  • Haha! You're the retareded 1!!

You must be deaf to be able to enjoy this version!! :P

  • At least I can spell !

    Here's a word for you:

    WANKER

  • hahahaha! How dare you use fowl language towards me. You are clearly unable to hold a discussion about something harmless without usind disgusting language. I like many others enjoy watching and having discussions on this site about videos, you obviously are unable to do that without by a total moron.

I think you have a serious anger management issue. Oh and just for the record, have you not heard of a typing error, dick head. There is no spelling error in this: You are an immature hooligan.

  • God, this is painful!

  • Ever heard of the phrase, good song made shite. No, mainly beacause it doesen't excist! (lol). But still, the TBS made a better job of that by far.

  • oh dear....thats pretty bad...

  • I love it BTW

  • spoilt a classic song

  • way to ruin a good song

  • Oh dear! I hope he dosent try to do Perfect 10, or Let love speak itself, or Song for whoever!

  • This man makes the best song ever sound horific! Leave it to Paul Heton...dodgy spelling!!

  • what was this from? Also who is this person, and what has he done with Old red eyes is back?!?! LEAVE IT TO THE PROFFESSIONALS!

  • That was really good.

  • james makes this so emotionless.

just not his song suited to his voice.

  • This is terrible! Too much screaming, squealing and vocal affectations - isn't good singing supposed to be able to tell the story? That was so amateurish. Blecchhhh.

  • amateurish? fuck off it was mint

  • Such a difference to Paul's voice; James has done them proud!

  • Adds a completely diffrnt dimension to the song doesn't it?Saw MSP in manchestr last fri,n TBS on tues in londn,so was quite interestin to hear this.He does try and turn it into a bit of a rocknroll song doesnt he?Puts alot of energy in.Thought was quite beautiful wen he starts higher pitchd,"old red he died",tho up til then wasnt too sure how keen I was.But then u see Dave's face when he sings that bit-a sort of amused/suprised smile-n u think, hell yeah this is such a jazzy cool piece of music!

  • The Beautiful South and James Dean Bradfield...an absoluty perfect combination! the both rock!!

  • sounds like an x factor audition, tuneless

  • Fucking awful. James does not do this song proud. Shouldn't have bothered.

  • It's not that bad, but James plays punk while the Beautiful South have a softer, more poppy sound. The two don't really go together too well.

  • Please don't be offended, but James doesn't play 'punk', he/they did perhaps at the very start of the Manic's career. James is so much more thoughtful/passionate that the general public give him credit. Please have a look at 'Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky' on later with jools; it's on youtube. I did enjoy this version of Old Red Eyes very much too : )

  • typo; 'THAN the general public give him credit.'

  • Paul Heaton is the man

  • "That last one were fucking brilliant, man."

    haha!
