you have WAY too much on your hands....i have a subaru and an 04 wrangler unlimited...prefer the jeep at the beach for 4LOW when needed...ive owned seven(98/99/00/02/04/06/10) different suby models..yet they dont compare to the jeep when its in 4LOW..i prefer to know that i wont get stuck instead of vdc this, and traction control that....not an issue in a jeep..sorry but the suby stays home on beach days.....
Would have made the first attempt if you used a little brake to lessen the wheel spin. (diffs unloading) Punching it doesn't always solve everything. ;)
If this vehicle had traction control, what would have happened? I think (but not sure) that the system would detect wheelspin, apply brake to the spinning wheel(s), the torque would have to overcome the brakes, and in doing so, more torque would be delivered to the wheels with traction. And the vehicle would move forward. Is that correct?
I would if they made one for it. It would also need a center locking diff as well to keep the power 50/50 front/rear instead of moving it around to get a locker to work correctly.
@jhuntjeeper by applying brake pressure to the spinneing wheel, the differential sends more power to the other wheel that's on the ground. it's an electronic substitute for a lack of a limited slip diff.
Nice one. Great example of how so much of off-road driving is about your angles and knowing where to put the tires. Same car in all cases, but different results based on the driver's choices. And you didn't just take the easy way out and bang through with momentum.

@XXB4XX i think the trim will be low , but idk because i had the impreza 2.5 i and i know that that would never get through that . but i like my forester
I found this video while trying to learn why my 2002 Subara "AWD" isn't (or at least what I thought an "AWD" meant). I got stuck while trying to back it out through a freshly-plowed snow bank and had to shovel it out. Not a big deal, but what puzzled me is why the right rear wheel was spinning away even while the other three weren't moving at all. There was snow packed underneath the back of the car which would lift it somewhat, but I thought the front wheels would grab?
Symmetrical AWD has nothing to do with diagonal spin (in any vehicle). Symmetrical AWD keeps the power equal to all 4 tires when they have traction, and avoids torque steer due to un-equal length half shafts. It also transmits power from front to rear very well. It's the DIFFERENTIAL that transmits power from wheel to wheel on the same axle. So when you are running open diffs (and a weak rear LSD in my case), you'll get diagonal spin, regardless of what type of AWD system it is.
@bluefox4848 i know you are more experienced with this vehicle, but i am not sure about your comment about the sym. awd... there is a video where the back tire has no traction( on rollers) and it continues to push on..... would that not be the same or is that just for one wheel?
No but you would have creditors asking why you smashed your new 70,000$ piece of equipment with 1" of ground clearance when you could have bought a more reliable, better performing, more practical, more fuel-efficient, and symmetrical SUV for less than half the price.. You sound real smart
The diff isn't locked it's LIMITED slip.. which means it slips a LIMITED amount.. Try giving it less power for a longer period of time when you're spinning, and let the diff catch up. Once you feel the power being transferred then give it a little more throttle. Subarus are tricky pieces of equipment, but without a doubt the most versatile vehicles in the world.. I got 472,000 on my Forester now, and I still prefer it to most newer cars.
audi's are based on the same principles there is nothing it can do different based in the same scenario.
A stronger RLD or lockable differential is one of the only things than can change the outcome. Audi and this forester are not able to put the torque down to two diagonally crossed wheels to move the car.
Nope it sure doesn't, not on the Subaru's. Using the rear handbrake trick doesn't work either. These cars a brutal with the diagonal spin. You sort of just have to learn the point of no return with the diagonal spin so you can reverse back out and gain more momentum. Makes it more challenging.
No VDC. Later Foresters (07+) had Subaru's VDC system which intelligently brakes the spinning wheels allowing the others to get traction. The 04's certainly didn't. If I did, there would be literally no way to get this thing stuck. lol.
The rear is Limited Slip diff. Front is open diff. Rear LSD's really only work when both wheels have traction, not so much when one is up in the air. Locking diff would be nice.
Yep, all XT's have the LSD in the rear. It works great on road, but I will admit that it's weak for anything off road, but it does make it a challenge I guess. lol. Cusco makes a damn good rear diff for our cars that helps immensely, but I just don't have $1800 to throw at it.
Change the rear stock lsd with a cusco 1.5 way and you will forget problems like these. Watch my videos to see what a forester with center lock, lsd front-cusco rear can do!!!
@AWDfreak The rear LSD's in this car is fluid coupling and doesn't actually have the ability to move the car with one wheel, despite the subaru marketing. I have this exact car and mine does the same thing. I had a gen 1 rav4 with a torsen mechanical LSD and locking center and it was a much better off-road car. even discounting the better tires and approach/departure angles. Bluefox, cool vid, not exactly "brave" but is clear and doesn't have a crap soundtrack
i seen SUV's do stuff like this without difficulties, but still nice. I want to see this go off roading through it all with a Land Rover Defender 130, Hummer H1 Alpha,
Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited, Toyota Land Cruiser 200, and a Mercades benz G55 amg. i would give that 5 stars. but for this vid, still thumbs up. :)

another method is to lightly ride the brakes. its give the free spinning wheel resistance then sends some power to the wheel with traction.

isn't traction control supposed to help that diagonal spin?

My Forester doesn't have traction control. Just standard AWD with front open diff, and a weak rear LSD.
