Education is the solution...i was born poor, experienced eating nothing in a day (but im lucky enough for we here have access to clean potable water)...but i strive hard, even if my stomach is empty i still go to school, coz i believe nobody can help me except myself, i even have to work just to send myself to college...because of perseverance and self-determination, i'm now able to buy what i want, eat what i wanna eat..and most of all, help my other brothers and sisters...i know how hard it is

It is cheaper to import food from America rather than pay to transport from one region to another - inside Ethiopia. As a direct consequence of this, during the great famine of the 1980s, there were plenty of grain and food in the southern region of the country but the country had to rely on cheap imported food to feed its starving people.

To mainmenu895 - No it would not work. As long as average family size is above two, we will never be able to feed everyone. Even if we all became vegetarians and sent all of our surplus food to starving families (who are already vegetarian because they cannot afford meat), if the starving families keep having 7 kids each, then we soon will all be starving. It's still a good idea for other reasons to not eat meat.
@verdulo There is more than enough food on the planet to feed everyone beyond contentment, it's more an issue of food distribution. Actually yes, feeding them will help, but of course must be coupled with education, birth control, woman's rights etc. In many cases in Africa they have so many children becuase the mortality rate is so high. So really it isn't just an issue of giving them the option, have less children or watch them starve, because of the high mortality rate, their religion, etc.

Education is the solution...i was born poor, experienced eating nothing in a day (but im lucky enough for we here have access to clean potable water)...but i strive hard, even if my stomach is empty i still go to school, coz i believe nobody can help me except myself, i even have to work just to send myself to college...because of perseverance and self-determination, i'm now able to buy what i want, eat what i wanna eat..and most of all, help my other brothers and sisters...i know how hard it is

There are as many Ethiopian doctors in the greater area of Chicago as compared to the WHOLE OF ETHIOPIA.
It is cheaper to import food from America rather than pay to transport from one region to another - inside Ethiopia. As a direct consequence of this, during the great famine of the 1980s, there were plenty of grain and food in the southern region of the country but the country had to rely on cheap imported food to feed its starving people.

The saddest thing is that they are not willing to learn from their past experience and result to change their strategy... for better outcome. I say we need to stop and think her befor we go to far.

Let's look at this... poor country - government has no revenue source to invest in infrastracture and agri - aid money received - population explosion - aid money not enough - people are poorer - people starve - implement sophisticated water collection and retention mechanisms and infrastructure to alleviate rain fed agri - no private sector to invest - poor people - government coffers empty - poor country.

To mainmenu895 - No it would not work. As long as average family size is above two, we will never be able to feed everyone. Even if we all became vegetarians and sent all of our surplus food to starving families (who are already vegetarian because they cannot afford meat), if the starving families keep having 7 kids each, then we soon will all be starving. It's still a good idea for other reasons to not eat meat.

@verdulo There is more than enough food on the planet to feed everyone beyond contentment, it's more an issue of food distribution. Actually yes, feeding them will help, but of course must be coupled with education, birth control, woman's rights etc. In many cases in Africa they have so many children becuase the mortality rate is so high. So really it isn't just an issue of giving them the option, have less children or watch them starve, because of the high mortality rate, their religion, etc.

I hate how everyone is sending money and all the kids get is a jacket and a pen or semthing like that. So much money. Wasted. I guess you should have friends in Ethiopia so you know where your money goes. I think most of the money should go into education, so that these kids can one day make their own money. And they need a lot of healthcare, clothes etc.
This is just so sad. I'm praying for them.

I think nobody cares if millions of them die every other decade - is called population control. This just makes me so mad... the man's family is starving, and he says it is "God's will" that he have 7 children. Advice to aid workers. Do not give anything to this family! If they starve, tell them it is "God's will". God takes care of people who are caring. This man is mean and selfish for having so many children when he cannot feed them.

It is the pro-life nuts who are causing these children to starve - by not telling the parents that the good and caring thing to do is to not have so many children. Either have fewer children or watch them starve - there is no third choice. Me feeding them is not the solution. that would only result in even more deaths by starvation when I run out of money.
