Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are done by the same people. Mugen and Jin are Spike divided into 2 people. Mugen's the wild, trouble making side of Spike and Jin's the calm, cool side of Spike. in episode 20 of Cowboy Bebop just look at Spike's reaction when he sees all these people murder and the killer infront of him. He has no reaction, he just stand there like "whatever, I don't care" That's totally how Jin would react.
I've said this before and I'll say it again. Spike and Mugen are NOTHING alike. Spike is nice to most. Mugen isn't. Spike has a goal. Mugen just wants to fight. Spike's a bounty hunter. Mugen is...well I don't know what he is...he's not a samurai I know that. He's a capoeira/samurai/thug hybrid. They are completely different if you open your eyes to see it. Just because they have the same english voice actor doesn't mean they are the same.
I'd like to think that Mugen is Spike's ancestor, rather than copy ^^.
First, they are voiced by two different Japanaese voice actors. The ONLY time where this is done is the English dub. But Steve Blum is awesome anyway. Second, other than somewhat looking alike, I see no similarities. Their personalities differ, as well as strategies, and other than rapid fighting skills, that's where it stops.
Other similarities are on the shows themselves, not the two characters.
it would be great if the producer (shinichiro watanabe) would actually make a clip like a bonus on dvd or something where mugen and spike would actually fight each other, after initially recover from the shock that they look alike ! :D
I always thought it was a good way of getting a similar type of show, without changing the ending on BeBop. I like how when it was brought to America, even the English dub had the same voice actor.
Although they are similar, there is some differences. Mugan seems to have no point in his life, and no one he cares for before the show really starts (he also seems angry more often) As for Spike, he at least had a goal to reunite with a long lost love. And seems to enjoy life a little more.
yes i do realize that, but its jut a commentary n the fact that he seems to use the same kind of character in each of his series... either keep making the same series or do something different! I'd rather have more cowboy bebop episodes and no samurai champloo. and whats worse, both in the English and Japanese versions Spike and Mugen are voiced by the same actors.

The difference is the time the live. They are the same character, but I think he wanted to see what Spike would be like during edo period.
Plus, they do have their differences.

@Xerxes667 The creators made Mugen in the image of spike, he's a homage, and in my opinion and better character.
