The great James Hunt. How I followed so enthusiastically this guy's F1 career and was so happy when he turned up F1 World Champion. Hunt was that type of guy that wasn't going to grow old. He was a typical young 1970's F1 driver. He really enjoyed life the way you can only do when you 're young, strong and healthy. James would never get old.
Great James Hunt, an unforgettable caracther of 1970's F1.
@olarcial Agree entirely. James Hunt was a genuine legend, definitely a 70's sporting icon in the same way that Barry Sheen was. Both very colourful characters indeed! F1 is all the worse these days for the corporate BS and the somewhat tame driver's. Can you imagine what JH would have to say if somebody presented him with a sponsors baseball cap to wear post race?! I suspect it would end in the word, "OFF!" lol A Great British driver & sportman- RIP
When drivers were drivers...none of the political Bull these days...Hunt, awesome, charasmatic, great driver, had the xfactor in the fact that he was likeable...(unlike Hamilton)...I was at the Brands race '76...awesome....hunt = legend.
Had Hunt driven the McLaren in 1982 I have no doubt he would have done better than Watson or Lauda. Watson lost the title by 4 points in 1982. Hunt as Lauda's team mate at McLaren would have been something to see. Well,I myself was only born back then, but I still enjoy videos of the classic racers.
After a considering a comback during the mid 1980's, Hunt became a champion breeder of budgerigars and parrots. Rumor has it he died of a heart attack, hours after proposing to his girlfriend Helen.
So basically he "did an Elvis" ? Apparently Elvis autopsy showed he had the internals of a 70 year old even though he was only 44. Scary to think that's what having fun can do to you!
How can you compare Hunts lifestyle to Elvis who died from a compacted colon straining so hard on the toilet it actually stopped his heart, i suppose his greasy hair would have been quite streamlined tho
What was the real story with his death - there was a strange media silence on it here - and there was no internet in 93 so i never really found out what happened - how did a fit guy die young? Drugs?
James Hunt did hit the drugs hard in the 80's. He lost most of his money in Marbella where he opened a big nightclub. He had 2 sons from his failed marriage (same mum? probably.). He was coming off the booze and the drugs - infact he was in full exercise mode.

@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH Yes. Barry Sheene the bionic man. And don't forget to mention the incredible Mike Hailwood.
There aren't just guys like that anymore. The 1970's F1 had really some special guys.
