Classics were the best. Was it '89 when both number 1 and number 2 were Ax and Smash of demolition only to be followed by number 3 Andre the giant?
All in all '92 was the best ever. Flair put on a great show. He literally squared off with almost everyone that came into the squared circle and you had Monsoon and Hennan calling the action with Hennan constantly panicking over Flair.
@VisionofOrion Flair tangled with everyone at the Rumble EXCEPT for Ted DiBiase; too bad Teddy couldn't hang onto the ropes or something as Flair entered. Ric could've not only won the title, but fought with the other 29 guys :)
@fivebearrugs Would of been cool. If I remember right, Dibiase was injured thats why he was gone in under two minutes. That was the WWF back then, hurt or not you still had to show up and work, even if it was only for 2 minutes.
@VisionofOrion Wow...I never knew that. I believe you, but was it specifically stated somewhere that he was injured at the time? Another example would be Survivor Series 95 I think, where an injured Shawn Michaels was on the apron for the entire match (his hand was taped up) and then decides to tag in, and accidentally superkick Diesel. It was also a few couple of years ago that I learned that Perfect's back was in bad shape at SummerSlam '91 when he fought Bret Hart.
@fivebearrugs I remember hearing it through the wrestling flyers back then (long before the internet.)...
Michaels was still recovering from being jumped in a bar fight so his role was limited in the '95 SS. His knee was also messed up in '90 Summerslam (rocker days) and was "jumped" before the Rockers match with Power and Glory leaving Michaels out of the match.
Perfect injured his back when he was feuding with British Bulldog. He competed under injury just to drop the title.
@VisionofOrion I was reading an old weekly Usenet column and it indicated that DiBiase was knocked out of the 92 Rumble so quickly because he was on the outs with WWF and talking with WCW about coming in. The author could have been incorrect though.
@peterp21 That could be the case. My source was (at the time) a good friend who read about it in one of the wrestling flyers (Possibly "Wrestling Observer") I actually met Dibiase in person about a year and a half later at an independent promtion which gives credibility to what you heard.
No matter what the reason it was strange to see Dibiase go out so early in a Pay per view.

Bret Hart wasn't in the Royal Rumble in 92...he wasn't even on the Pay-Per View. He was supposed to be westling The Montie for the Intercontinental Championship but missed the show. This was the only show he missed during his WWE days.
After the old school Raw they really do need to do an old school Rumble intro. AN UNPRECEDENTED 40 SUPERSTARS COMPETE IN THE ROYAL RUMBULLLL! including Jack Swagger! The Shaman of Sexy John Morrison! TRIPLE H! KINNNNNG SHEAMUS! Alleged real Nexus leader WADE BARRETT! The UNNNNNNDERTAKER! The World's Strongest Man Mark Henry! The Uso Brothers! CM PUNNNNNK and JOHHHHHHN CENA!
@TheKenolaBar An intro like that would take forever but knowing the WWE they'd want that. Why ya think they have 40 this year, so they won't have to worry about the undercard as much.
these were the days when i used to look forward to the royal rumble cause it had so many huge name wrestlers. without a doubt royal rumble 1990 was the best and the biggest. wwe nowdays is dull and too many boring no talent wrestlers with no personality either. even the crap back then like koko b ware and akeem even had character. i miss the true old days.
Yeah, I miss the good old days myself. this song was great for the rumble. and I loved how they introduced eact wrestler in the rumble and did quick promos every other introduction...
The clock is ticking down to the royal rumble. What means no friends only enemys. 30 men. But 1 winner. What means 29 opponents are getting nervous the more the time passes by. But not me. Im cold, im calculating. I will take my time. I will make no mistakes. While the 29 other opponents will make mistakes and fall one by one in they own defeat. And when you make a mistake. I will be there to take advantage of your mistake. Intil all 29 opponent are eliminated.
My era of wrestling was the attitude era. I remember ordering the 2000 Royal Rumble and loving every minute of it. After watching early 90's Rumbles, I don't even think I'd rate the 2000 Rumble in the top 3 of all time! Just goes to show how awesome wrestling was back then when I favour it over Attitude. Not by MUCH though!
I wished i could sent you back to my era man and see Hogan do what Austin did but 3X as better. For example, Feburary 5 1988, The Main Event Hogan vs Andre WM3 rematch garnered 15.8 ratings, doubles the amount of Austins 1999 8 man tag event which had *taker, rock, kane, ect.* and that was an 8.1. Just watch the match on here and see why its better then any of austins. *I'm not trying to make you GE over Attitutde, just trying to let you watch them*
@tonshaad1230 I'm jealous lol. I love wrestling from 1985-2002 pretty much. The Rock was my favourite growing up as I watched Raw is War. I love the old feuds and characters from the glory days. So many wrestlers like Hogan, Macho, Jake the Snake, The Model, Bret Hart, Ric Flair, Razor Ramon, Shawn Michaels, Warrior and the list goes on. Loved the old stories, gimmicks and effort they put into the story lines. SummerSlam 1992 was awesome as well as pretty much every Pay per view back then.
I couldnt of imagined what the hype for the early years of WWE PPV would of been like, I guess we take PPVS now for granted considering back then there was only like 4 PPVS a year.
@thisisshane90 They were very special back in the day, lol. RR was in Jan on a Sat night, WM in March/April, SSlam in Aug on a Mon night and of course SSeries on Thanksgiving night, and later Tgiving Eve. About a month before the event, Mean Gene Okerlund would do weekly updates for the cards. The first one was always the date and location of the event and maybe the main event. In the weeks to come, there would be more matches added, or wrestlers replacing others...so fun :)
Everyone, ignore the troll known as nicedarren. If you can't be bothered to go to WWE's website and see the PPV calendar still says ROYAL RUMBLE and instead just take what the troll says at face value, then I feel sorry for you.
God I can still hear mean gene yelling over this music ...ORDER NOW WWF ROYAL RUMBLE !! ...:::( The great day's as a kid growing up waiting to see these PPV event's !!
Rumble was too violent? LIKE REALLY WTF? Back in my era no kid paid attention to the name, it was justified by the actions of our heroes! Man Vince you'd do anything for money wouldn't you? Ruin your own company with changing traditional PPVs? Whats next, give Wade Barrett the title and expect people to ACTUALLY get behind him? HULK HOGAN WE NEED YOU MORE THEN EVER NOW BROTHER!
welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllcome everyone to the 2011 edition of the wwe's over the top!!!!!!!!!!! 30 men 1 goal 1 man left standing lol
cant wait till they finally get rid ov the royal rumble the word rumble its very violent over the top which is the new name they've chosen is much nicer lol
This is how i remember the WWE as a kid. 4 PPVs a year, always with the same logo, and the same theme tunes. Awesome. Hype was built up on SuperStars, Wrestling Challenge, and Saturday Nights Main Event. Loved it.
Those were the days. This music would be playing and Vince would be hyping up the event and the wrestlers like crazy. Even the jobbers in the Rumble got the classic Vince introduction.
Nowadays it wouldn't be the same, even if VInce did it again. "Kofiiiiiiiiiiiii Kingstonnnnnnnnnnnnn!" "Jack Swaaaaaaggerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" and such.
@MrNotbadyou lmfao@ kofiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii kingstonnnnnnnnnnnnn & jack swaaaaaaaaaaaaaagger......thats funny, and nope, it wouldn't be the same and might i say...this is the best theme song for this pay-per-view...it was well orchastrated along with the wrestlemania theme...i always loved it when i watch the ending of the pay-per-view and they show the highlights along with the tune...
@MrNotbadyou You are right because he is all worn out from screaming to long over the past couple of years. It just wouldn't sound as great as it did back than.
@MrNotbadyou Besides the hype that surrounded the PPV's, another thing i always liked was the "countdown" shows that took place BEFORE they began! Those were awesome! They ran down the card for the evening and showed highlights of moments that led up to the match! They put 30 minutes up and as you started counting down, those 30 minutes felt like an eternity! You couldn't wait to lose your mind once the countdown ended and they started the event!
I did the original HAAAKKUU!!!!!!

The WWF had a thing with the mild-winter cities hosting the Royal Rumble back in the vintage days:
1989: Houston, Texas
1990: Orlando, Florida
1991: Miami, Florida
1995: Tampa, Florida
1997: San Antonio, Texas

TheKenolaBar 1 year ago 2
@TheKenolaBar An intro like that would take forever but knowing the WWE they'd want that. Why ya think they have 40 this year, so they won't have to worry about the undercard as much.
steeltownbrown52 1 year ago
@steeltownbrown52 I think it's more trying to pretend someone other than Cena or HHH have a chance in hell of winning it.

Cuz Alberto Del Rio has no chance at all.......

@michiyoyoshiku I typed that before the show happened. Kudos to them for picking someone not obvious for once.

Yeah I know you actually Del Rio was pretty obvious but no more satisfying as a winner. Lets just hope they don't botch this and make him a huge star

these were the days when i used to look forward to the royal rumble cause it had so many huge name wrestlers. without a doubt royal rumble 1990 was the best and the biggest. wwe nowdays is dull and too many boring no talent wrestlers with no personality either. even the crap back then like koko b ware and akeem even had character. i miss the true old days.
Andy2481 1 year ago

Not by MUCH though!
zzDzCzCzz 1 year ago
@zzDzCzCzz
*I'm not trying to make you GE over Attitutde, just trying to let you watch them*
tonshaad1230 1 year ago

I couldnt of imagined what the hype for the early years of WWE PPV would of been like, I guess we take PPVS now for granted considering back then there was only like 4 PPVS a year.
thisisshane90 1 year ago

This is how i remember the WWE as a kid. 4 PPVs a year, always with the same logo, and the same theme tunes. Awesome. Hype was built up on SuperStars, Wrestling Challenge, and Saturday Nights Main Event. Loved it.
angrydentist 1 year ago
Those were the days. This music would be playing and Vince would be hyping up the event and the wrestlers like crazy. Even the jobbers in the Rumble got the classic Vince introduction.
Nowadays it wouldn't be the same, even if VInce did it again. "Kofiiiiiiiiiiiii Kingstonnnnnnnnnnnnn!" "Jack Swaaaaaaggerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" and such.
MrNotbadyou 1 year ago 17
@MrNotbadyou lmfao@ kofiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii kingstonnnnnnnnnnnnn & jack swaaaaaaaaaaaaaagger......thats funny, and nope, it wouldn't be the same and might i say...this is the best theme song for this pay-per-view...it was well orchastrated along with the wrestlemania theme...i always loved it when i watch the ending of the pay-per-view and they show the highlights along with the tune...

17NJDevilsfan 1 year ago
@MrNotbadyou Besides the hype that surrounded the PPV's, another thing i always liked was the "countdown" shows that took place BEFORE they began! Those were awesome! They ran down the card for the evening and showed highlights of moments that led up to the match! They put 30 minutes up and as you started counting down, those 30 minutes felt like an eternity! You couldn't wait to lose your mind once the countdown ended and they started the event!
