In my opinion, del Monaco captured the essence of Canio better than anyone ever has. If this aria was removed from the opera, Canio would be nothing more than a violent, wife- beating drunk. But this tender and tragic side of him only appears when he is alone. Mario del Monaco gave Canio a dimension that other tenors haven't come close to.
i think Alagna puts to much acting and less soul in it....i love Monaco and Domingo interpretation of this aria

In my opinion, Roberto Alagna sing this better. Maybe his voice isn't as strong, but the emotion comes through so much stronger than it does here...

I completely agree. And this has never been replicated either. This emotion he projects, one can't even name it precisely, yet it shatters the soul.
