i worked at the cokeworks at monkton after the strike i was at jarrow staithes for ten years monkton till the day it shut the lads wa a canny laff mint times after the strike most lads came from all over from different coal works was the good old days coff coff
I worked at Monkton from 1979 to 1986. I worked opposite Jimmy Mulligan on the ram which pushed the coke out of the ovens and into the coke car that he operated. Jimmy was a character, I was shocked when I heard about his tragic death . I also worked on the oven tops on the charger. It was tough place to work. The heat , dust and smoke did no one any good.
this brought back memories, i worked at monkton for 5yrs after the strike mainly on the guide taking the oven doors off and putting the cage in to push the oven of coke out. I worked for nine years before this at lambton which shut after the strike Pity i've got a dodgy chest now through breathing all the dust and fumes in !!!!!!! believe me it was never a good place to work
thank you for posting this vid my dad worked there for 26 years on the shunter taking the coke down to the quencher.sadly he's no longer with us i remember when i was ten he took me on the shunter when he was picking his wages up one friday, and he nearly got the sack for it a big big landmark gone forever.kind regards ron
I seem to remember the name but I cant put a face to it. However if your dad was still on the coke car in 1988 I will have known him as I was "battery machines fitter" from 1985-1990. Sorry he`s no longer around.
Thanks for the reply me dad worked on the yellow coke car and the little green shunter taking the coke down to the quencher, in May 2002 he was killed by two drug addicts in a hit and run in windy nook it was all over the papers and in the news for quite a while, if you go to the evening chronicle and type in Jimmy Mulligan you would see a picture of in there hope this will jog your memory.
This is so awesome!! :) Thank you for the film clips of modern, still operational coke batteries. I'm tired of looking at still pictures, so this was a real treat.
Thanks for your comment, however most of this video is eighteen years old (Monkton closed in 1990).I may have some more stuff to post when I get time.
I have some footage from monkton i even collected my 90 days notice live from the office loved it there

I used to live next to it as a child. I can still remember the smells and the sound of the alarm which can be heard at 1:50.
Good times.

As the epa watches from cars and trucks built by coke plants and they discard the ciggarette butts on the road that pollute worse than anything.

Thanks for posting the vid. I'm making a website about the blast furnace industry and planning a N gauge model railroad with this as the subject.
