As an Afro-Latino I would like to say we are all mixed. Even I am mixed. My father a Cuban is mixed of Spaniard, Afro-Cuban, and Chinese Cuban, my mother a Brazilian is mixed of Cafuzo and Moor. Yet we are taught we are Spanish, Portuguese, French etc, doesn't mean we are ignorant and didn't know where our ancestors came from. @pinquifrustri My wife's family is from Cuitlahuac Veracruz near Yanga. They aren't black nor to they have that accent. Just recently my father in law told me about "black" people in Tlacotaplan. He said there were alot of Cuban imigrants in that area. helao and the dropping of the S is similar to caribbean spanish. Which inturn evolved from Andalusian Spanish and that of the canary islands.

@skillkraft I don't know if you saw the series but for many Mexicans they can tell the difference and these is why people are still discriminated against. Like he said when he goes to the capital people can tell and be racist to them. Also even the way they speak Spanish is different with word pronunciation due to many communities being ostracized from the main population. The Thing is Mexico African population is 1% when Puerto Rico is 30% to 40% of the population. Now that is a contribution.
@sportsmarvel I have seen the series, but through my own studies there are many different genetic equations that make up the background. While the most dominant physically are the Cubans, Dominicans and Puerto Ricans, those countries didn't allow interracial marriages until a long period of time after the first free colony in the western region being that of Yanga. The Caribbean happend to be mainly a drop off point were the slave owners picked up there incoming slaves.

@skillkraft The same can be said for Mexico when you are talking about if only 1% or even less make up the population then it really is a non factor in the overall makeup of the population. I mean you can say the same thing about the make up of Argentina which is probably less than 0.1% of the population in Latin America. Where Puerto Rico has a number at minimum is 20% and could be as high as 40% of the population makeup. You are talking about a 5th to almost half of the population total.

As an Afro-Latino I would like to say we are all mixed. Even I am mixed. My father a Cuban is mixed of Spaniard, Afro-Cuban, and Chinese Cuban, my mother a Brazilian is mixed of Cafuzo and Moor. @pinquifrustri My wife's family is from Cuitlahuac Veracruz near Yanga. They aren't black nor to they have that accent. Just recently my father in law told me about "black" people in Tlacotaplan. He said there were alot of Cuban imigrants in that area. helao and the dropping of the S is similar to caribbean spanish. Which inturn evolved from Andalusian Spanish and that of the canary islands.
I enjoyed the program but I don't see black people like they promote in this show.

Like he said when he goes to the capital people can tell and be racist to them. Also even the way they speak Spanish is different with word pronunciation due to many communities being ostracized from the main population. @sportsmarvel I have seen the series, but through my own studies there are many different genetic equations that make up the background. While the most dominant physically are the Cubans, Dominicans and Puerto Ricans, those countries didn't allow interracial marriages until a long period of time after the first free colony in the western region being that of Yanga. The Caribbean happend to be mainly a drop off point were the slave owners picked up there incoming slaves.

@sportsmarvel The Caribbean became a colony mainly made up of slaves, like I mentioned my family comes from Yanga and we have African ancestry within our family you can't see it from a physical standpoint because it has been diluted from 500 years of intermixing. Just from myself to my children their mother is Half Italian and half Ethiopian but doen't look black but more Hispanic with there Grandma being from Ethiopia. My kids have no resemblance of looking black.

@skillkraft You do realize that Ethopians mixed with Arabs & even they question their Sub Saharan Africaness. Also facial features of Ethiopian women are a bit different & their phenotype can vary. I also must say that it is rumored that King Solomon married the Queen of Sheba and she had his son. If add White Jew to the Ethiopian mix it really can come down to likeness. My point is simple Mexican African is 1% of the population you have a higher African population in some European countries.

@sportsmarvel I'm not saying they are 50% black but more so that the African ancestry exist within Mexican people more so in a diluted form, I look like a typical Hispanic person dark hair, dark eyes mocha color skin but my sister on the other hand looks like a person that came from a Black and Native couple but we have the same parents. That is my point that the genetic line still exist within Mexican people it's just hidden.

I remember when I lived in London my friend was African and Spanish Her dad was Spanish and her mom was African from Africa. She actually had blue eyes and dark skin. However when you think of Spanish you think of Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz, David Villa, Gerard Pique, Iker Casillas. Paz Vega. not her even if she was half.

London itself had a large African population about 2% of the United Kingdom population and that does not include mixed race. Also they also began to start to come in around the 16th century. The first record of an African in London was in 1593. His name was Cornelius. Even Japan has a black population.

One of the first blacks in the U.K(Britannia) was St.Maurice, who was a Roman officer in the 3rd Roman Legion that went into Western Europe. He was martered in Britain and became the first African patrion Saint of the Roman Catholic Church.

@skillkraft My whole point was that due to the African slave trade many countries including England, France and Spain had and influx of Slaves to their countries as well as Mexico but the over all make up of the countries is still the same due to the low numbers. I mean 2% of United Kingdom doesn't change its complexion to much and if U add the mix raced it still doesn't make a dent. @skillkraft The same can be said for Mexico when you are talking about if only 1% or even less make up the population then it really is a non factor in the overall makeup of the population. I mean you can say the same thing about the make up of Argentina which is probably less than 0.1% of the population in Latin America. Where Puerto Rico has a number at minimum is 20% and could be as high as 40% of the population makeup. You are talking about a 5th to almost half of the population total.

@skillkraft Honestly I just think professor Gates missed a big opportunity & could have gone to Puerto Rico & Columbia where the Afro Populations are over the 20% range compared to Mexico which has only a 1% Afro population that includes an influx in Afro Caribbeans & Belize people coming to Mexico for work & labor opportunities. I mean Giovani Dos Santos who is a Mexican National but I wouldn't consider him 2 B the overall makeup of the population or face when DNA statistics don't support it.

Their studies have shown a strong presence of Amerindian & European genetic contributions to the overall Mexican population, with a relatively small African contribution that is slightly above the East Asian genetic admixture.[1] Obviously if you are telling me you can pass for a Mexican/Latino man then your likeness has changed. 85% can't though.

It was actually a lot of black kids. I wish I could find it. Professor Gates unfortunately painted the picture like everyone in Mexico is black which if you look up the stats is impossible and look at DNA studies. Much research has been done. It is less than 1% of the population slightly above Asian.

Look up Creole De Couleur. These were the freed people of color here in the US. They were African people with the admixture of European ancestry. Some were African/French AND African/Spanish. It was COMMON practice in the South for Europeans to keep African concubines.
