There are many different styles of Tang Soo Do being taught out there. It is important as martial artists to be respectful of all. It is not outside the realm of understanding to have studios in different parts of town to be teaching differently, never mind on the other side of the world. Tang Soo
hmmm...they must do things differently in other countries. i'm a first dan black belt in Tang Soo Do in Australia and we do things A LOT differently. lol.
@cheycheyRose I agree. I'm a 1st dan black belt in TSD in England, and this looks nothing like the type of one steps we learn. Ah well, each to their own :)
@richardsoobhak - Thank you, that is so sweet of you to comment. I actually painted it for my husband, it's a rendition of a dragon I saw in a Kung Fu book a lobg time ago. I changed a few things (probably for the worse), but I was so stricken by their version I really fell in love with it. I appreciate your comment & Tang Soo!
It also changes the angle of your counter. Sliding the foot back allows you to step away from the business end of the the punch, knife, etc, helps measure the distance to your target, and in this case, allows the attack to strike the back side of the jaw below the ear. Nice technique Sir. Simple and it works.
Also alot of gup members especially Jr gups usually don't initially have the flexibility to effectively land the kick without sliding back. But that's just my opinion. TANG SOO
Sir: Thank you for posting the video. I do have a question though. After you perform the reverse punch, you are sliding your left foot back to your right foot before the right round kick. This looks wrong. I believe you are simply supposed to launch the round kick from the reverse punch stance. Your way takes extra time...Thanks.
@rreith The extra step is to get you off the line of attack .Lets say its a knife not a punch the block may release the knife but maybe no.The reaction to the block will be a swinging motion away from you , there natural reaction to that will be swing back. Now you have allready hit them and are out of the way for the second slice. follow up with a kick at a safe distance.Thats how this can be adapted to other situations. Thanks for the comment hope this explains the step.

I like the look of this art as it has more hand techniques than TKD. We do have TSD in England but the nearest club is 100 miles from me.

I believe realistically it would depend on ur distance. Either way would pass in my studio.
