  • if ya want watch..."180"movie....on youtube only 33 minutes long

  • Where he said what young men want to know is "how to have sex with their wives at least once a day." First, you will NOT find that answer in the Bible.

"For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions," (2Ti 4:3) (ESV) Remember these Church Plants will at some point be (hopefully) an Established Church. You can't flip a switch and go from "Planter to Pastor". Preach the Word.

  • No one can point out where Mark goes wrong. They can only point to where he hurt their feelings.

  • Such a great message. Many may be offended by it, but they (and me) need a swift kick in the butt and wake up. (And yes, I'm a young man in my 20's.)

  • Hey, here's an idea! Why go plant a church when there are so many "failing" churches? It is more important to keep churches "alive" than to build new ones. I bet Mark's church plants have directly led to the death of many other churches.

  • @GreenbergBass

It takes character and leadership to plant a new church... but when churches get too big, and no new leaders are built, that's when things get stale and go down hill. Founders really care about they plant, but people who just inherit it tend to not care as much.

  • Marks church would be dead as well if he didnt have soo many naive followers listening to his false gospel. Calvinism is from the devil's hell. Just allows ppl to sin its no saving gospel, it's not the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  • @TheKJVberean I can tell your not much of Berean. Shame on you for judging your brother in Christ! Calvanism nor Arminianism is the issue, Jesus Christ His Death and Resurrection is the GOSPEL by which we are saved.(1 Cor 15:1-4) Stop making Predestination and Free will the issue, this is a perfect example of why the Church is in the lukewarm if not totally Cold state that it is in.

  • inappropriate setting for this video!!!

  • The Older men who have sat under the eldership (with Christ as the head) of other pastors is the best approach to how the seeds of local congregations should be started. I think the Church in America has become too capitalistic in its ecclesiology, we need to get back to the basics of eldership and proper teaching of scripture on the basic doctrines of our faith (Salvation by Grace, Triune Nature of God, Regeneration) and growing the Body in sanctification of The Word.

  • I agree there needs to be more men "on mission" in the Body of Christ, but I think its important to note when it comes to church planting it's a very serious business. Not everyone is meant to "plant churches" and I believe the reason why so many of those planting organizations have failed is because they where likely never called by God to do so in the first place. This is why we have separated denominations.

  • Excellent video. I agree with the analogy of a pastor as a good soldier. Refer to the writings of Pastor Stu Weber which I think mirrors what is stated in this video.

  • Maybe the Church is dying because your ideas are false and reasonable society can not accept them.

  • I love this.. this is the way it is, and he's not even saying anything new. Think about it, wait read the word and then think about it....

  • the best u do is read the biography of men like john wesley, jonathan edwards, charles spurgeon, leonard ravenhill..what they all had in common they had a prayer life nothing compared to the one we have today

  • down with religion, down with Christianity

  • 5:20 - 5:57 is awesome!

  • yay!! the age of the blind dogma and the alpha male authoritarian god is ending, the ignorance of Christianity is dying. we have seen how there is a correlation with secularization and freedom. does mark want to go back to the middle ages? look at the countries that are the least religious, they have the least crime and highest standards of living. most Christians do not take the bible literally, they believe in evolution and accept a literal hell. fundamentalists like mark are dying. THANK GOD

  • @robaquarian, there has been NO greater experiment in human freedom than the founding of the United States, which was predominantly Christian at the time. If you think that the USA was founded in a very secular atmosphere, you're a pathetic student of history!

  • a bigger subwoofer into their retarted car, Hahaha

  • aschgedü´allla

  • Why does he mention that a pastor should tell the lady with the tambarine to park it? Any brothers or sisters in Christ that can give me some scripture to say why? Just wondering cause there's a guy at my church that brings one. He just worships though. What's wrong with what he's doing? (no pun intended towards Marc, Iike his stuff).

  • @connorsmog There is a lady in my church that brings a tambourine, stands in the back of the terrace level, and plays it while dancing during the music. Kinda cool. I saw her talking to an Elder several weeks ago.

  • @connorsmog There is a lady in my church that brings a tambourine, stands in the back of the terrace level, and plays it while dancing during the music. Kinda cool. I saw her talking to an Elder several weeks ago.

  • It is a metaphorical sense, what do you think hes talking about actually war ha how on earth do you read a fictional book, seriously? He's clearly saying the quilities of a pastor is like that of a solider. An dby the way "THEJOHNDORAN" I am from Nothern Ireland, and if your not from the country and havent read the history books u shouldnt take about it. Religion was used by the terrioists in the 1970's as an excuss, I grew up round this people they arent christian!

  • "in order to win a war, you need men"

Jesus that's worrying, sorry if this upsets anyone but I don't trust religion when it starts getting involved in war.

We've already had the crusades, 9/11, northern ireland and a thousand other examples where religion has butchered millions just because they worship a different unseen being.

  • I think he meant it in more of a metaphorical sense. It's a popular term used in media today, i.e - war on climate change/war on taxes/war on government spending, ect..

  • also, by his thinking, if the church, no matter the size, were 60% women, the "war" wouldn't be "won"..........

  • I see where your coming from. Christians (I am one) seem to land on the wrong side of history too often.

  • He's not talking about a physical war. But there are theological problems with what he's doing anyway. This focus on increasing numbers is just so unbiblical.

  • terriergal: Driscoll does not focus simply on increasing numbers, I would say you've been educated recently on the incorrectness of wanting numbers so you went into this with a bias looking for it. listen to what Driscoll has to say and what he says in his sermons, he's calling for more men (who are already counted among the elect) to step up and lead. Now of course Driscoll wants to see many come to Christ, but it is far from his focus. Just compare him to the likes of Joel Osteen.

  • @TheJohnDoran

I agree plus you have to love the irony of where he is walking. We need good christian soldiers so you can end up here. Dead for a dogma. No more theist's!

    No more dogma!

  • would you mind explaining why this is a cult? thanks in advance

  • sound points on a church planter

  • Mark, you are a good soldier on a daunting but rewarding mission bringing an awesome message to the world. Fight the good fight.

  • I think lobat is having a laugh.

  • you're just spouting nonsense to the wind without any evidence to back up your attacks on Mark Driscoll. stop being an ignorant troll unless you're ready to actually back up your statements.

  • i can see his fruit: a 8k+ church = the fastest growing church in the least church city in the US

  • a lot of people like crack too but we all know how good it is

  • birney, rebuke lies but please be a witness to grace and love and soften your words and your tone. a rebuking is more powerful if you simply reply with unchallengeable truth. it demonstrates confidence, too, which is a great evidence. some want to just evoke emotion from a believer, to see the emotion they evoke. let it be love, not anger lashed out

  • need>

  • we army chaplins like mark

  • Yes, it is true - the God of the Bible is a warmonger.

  • What do you mean warmonger???

  • He instructs the Israelites to plunder foreign peoples and to "kill every living creature", man woman and child. I would consider this war mongering.

  • Hes is talking about the bible. Not todays world.

  • Exactly.

  • He gives life and has the right to take it for his reasons. The problem you have is that you hate God for being God. You want to be in charge and you aren't.

  • It is strange that you think you have some kind of transcendent power to understand how I feel about God. The word "hate" (in ANY context) causes me to flinch. It disturbs me that you seem comfortable using it. Your church leader has obviously put the "you want to be in charge" idea into your head - it is a dull idea, and one that is rather common amongst the shallower congregations. I love the Lord. I don't believe everything that is in the Bible because it contradicts the Holy Spirit

  • You have cut your own position off at the knees and shown yourself to be a false believer. First of all the bible that you claim to not believe all of also claims to be inspired by the Holy spirit. "All scripture is 'God-breathed' says Paul. Second, you are a false believer because you clearly reject the authority of scripture. You have called God a war monger. That is a hateful thing to say. Therefore I don't need any transcendent ability in order to see your hatred for God. It is quite plain.

  • I don't say any of this in a spirit of animosity. I would pray that you re-think your position, read what scripture plainly says, and repent before almighty God.

  • I bet Sarah Palin would LOVE this scary cretin.

  • I love Sarah Palin! Can't wait to vote!

  • here's a little game for you bible researchers. whose quote are these:

    mattews 10:34

think not that i came to send peace on the earth. i came not to send peace, but a sword

Thomas 16 men think, perhaps, that it is peace which i have come tobring to this world. they do not know (...)that i bring discord, fire sword and war.

  • matthews? like david matthews? and thomas?? there is no such book in the bible.. maybe if you knew more about the bible than 1 quote that a fellow atheist friend gave you, youd sound less ignorant

  • HAHAHAHahahaahaha......!

  • *pat pat* there there..

did you find a bible yet?

  • HAHAHAHAHA!

(ok this joke is getting seriously stale)

to answer your honest question: Yes

now it's my turn to ask you a question: are you ready?

(I will wait for you be ready... honestly... just to see... )

  • ummz wat?

monster lol? explain, also the second half of that sentance makes no sence....

o well im jsut going to guess you just learned how to use the interweb?

im not a driscoll fan, im sure briscoll is just as bad

  • Well insaner169 we are sorry that this deffends you...

  • that what "deffends" me?

  • MARK DRISCOLL IS FREAKING AWESOME, love to see someone address something straight forward like this

  • SO TRUE!! I think there are too many women trying to be Pauls. I am a former escort. Like myself, many have sex ministries and are all female. 50% of men are involved in porn films yet there is not ONE male former sex working doing a ministry 4 Christ.

  • You may not like or associate with this mans style of teaching or the gospel which he promotes. All I can suggest to you is that you open the book and prove him wrong.

  • which book? the bible? the most widely recognized fallacy in the world? the book telling it's ok to have slave, kill gays, that people raise from the dead, that the universe spins around the flat, 6000yo earth, chop a newborn's penis and mutilate, rape and kill women?

All i can suggest to you is that you open the book and prove me wrong

  • 1 - where in the bible does it say that the EARTH spins around the Universe? Job 26:7 says that God "suspends the earth over nothing" - it sounds like the Bible says the earth is suspended in a vacuum.

2 - The Old Testament gives instructions on how you should act if you happen to be a slave or slave owner, but God never supported slavery. Exodus 20:2 - "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

  • ok nice to see you doing so much homework, so here's some more for you, from actual : find historical evidence that egypt had slaves. no no, not paid craftsmen or servants, but SLAVES. Or that moses wandered 40 years in the desert aimlessly without finding anything, living off of...mana? surely a whole clan of hebrews would leave anything behind for archeologists to find?

  • 3 - God strictly forbids rape - in the Old Testament(Deuteronomy 22:25-26) if a man rapes a woman he must be put to death.

    4 - God's commandments forbids murder(Deuteronomy 5:17)which includes killing women.

5 - Circumcison is not cutting off a penis - just the foreskin covering the penis. Also, since the New Testament Circumcision became unnecessary. 1 Corinthians 7:19 - Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God's commands is what counts.

  • ohhh i have so much fun

    about rape and murder:

'Moses speaking: Now therefore, KILL EVERY MALE AMONG THE LITTLE ONES, and KILL EVERY WOMAN who has known a man intimately, but keep alive for yourself all the young girls who have not known a man intimately (Numbers 31)

circumcision: genesis 17.1-18. then Paul says it's not important? that 'only keeping the god-given commandments' is important? Newsflash! chopping a newborn's genitals is one. this is easy

  • oh more about murder: Joshua 6 seemed pretty tame to me: 'they devoted the city to the LORD and destroyed with the sword EVERY LIVING THING IN IT, men and women, young and old, cattle sheep and donkey.''

  • 6 - God does find the sin of homosexuality detestable, but at the same time any form of sexual immorality is detestable to him (1Corinthians 6:18, Colossians 3:5, Matthew 15;9).

7 - God did give me something - SALVATION FROM SIN thru his son Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus died for us, yet you say God never gave me anything - I disagree. Also, It's not for us to seek wordly things from God but to seek spiritual gifts such as faith, hope, love and relationship with God. God is not a candy machine.

  • 6- the laws of rape: if a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay 50 pieces of silver to her father. then he must MARRY the young woman BECAUSE he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.' Deuteronomy 22:28-29

7- considering the PROVEN HISTORICAL EVIDENCE that the romans wrote everything in the bible,

  • why would anyone in his right mind believe anything was made by an all-loving, all forgiving, all-knowing, all-encompassing, all-mighty, although not-there-at-all man in the sky? a god that not only allows slavery, but REWARDS RAPE! my invitation still stands: OPEN THE FUCKING BOOK AND PROVE ME WRONG

  • "Open the f**king book"?

You obviously have an issue with God - I wonder what is the real reason for your hatred? Was God somehow unjust to you? . . .or there is no rational reason for why you hate God? Jesus did command us to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." (Matthew 22:37) I hope that you are not one of the people whom Bible writes about in Romans 1:18-32.

  • Out of context - if she has consented to having sex with him (aka - did not scream because she felt like she was forced to have sex) then the guy pays and marries her. If she did NOT consent and he raped her then he was executed.

Also...did not Jesus command use to "Love your neighbor as yourself"(Matthew 22:39)? If a man rapes a woman is that "loving your neighbor"? I think you'd agree that is certainly not the case. If someone murders a neighbor is that loving the neighbor?

  • Et voilà! there you go, this is the moment where your universe crumbles when common sense emerges. first thing you do? saying I have an issue with god. i don't. he doesn't exist. if he did exist and you could somehow meet him, talk to him, shake his hand or something like that (because on all accounts, you could just share a Guinness with the guy), then he wouldn't be a god anymore.

Out of context?!? RAPE? What is so profoundly WRONG with you? don't try to slither away.

  • you know what? looking back on your prior comments, i realised you're an proselytizer in foreing contries. and that you're a 35 yo virgin, and that you think premarital sex is wrong, and that you seem to know squat about women screaming (in terror or in pleasure), that you ask OTHERS about masturbation. and that you ask us to pray god to give you strenght... Well you have my support 500%: keep your pristine dick as far away from the gene pool. the world has enough giddy childfuckers as it is

  • You do have issue with God...otherwise why get upset over someone who "doesn't exist" and then slander him. Why do you waste time writing angry words about God when he's not there? Perhaps Romans 1:18-32 does apply - you've obviously read the Bible , but you did not put faith in God and instead blasphemed him.

    Ephesians 5:6-7

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them.

  • why i don't have faith in god: because having faith in the sun makes so much more sense, because all you have that proves him is a book written by bronze age barbarians, because other than said book, you have no evidence whatsoever, because the more you understand the life and death the less ressurection seems likely, because not only religion has ALWAYS been a societal retardant, but you have the guts to impede on the progression of science. because christianity is a mash-up of other religions

  • Sorry, I don't go to Catholic Church which accepts false doctrine and Apocrytha books created by the pagan Gnostics in 4th century AD. Bible forbids worshiping of the sun and other heavenly hosts and tells me to worship him only (Deutronomy 4:15-39).

I'm blocking science? ... hahaha! - CERN was not exactly a cheap toy. Cosmologists act like gods, create "theories" without any evidence (ex: superstring theory or multiple universe theory) - all in support of Madame Blavatsky's theosophy.

  • heu... somehow you are responsible for the centre européen de recherche nucléaire, whose principles are all hard scientific method, with your preaching and your profound knowledge of the bible and masturbation. you also don't go to catholic church, which is all false doctrine according to you, but you preach it like you WANT to prove me wrong, but haven't yet so far. don't waste your time; you won't. and keep your bible thumping AND your fraud quoting, i've already proven it's bullshit.

  • now let's see what you've accomplished:

-quoted the bible 14 times, yet somehow say it's a false doctrine

-said doctrine doesn't apply to you, yet you happen to be a preacher of it, and it's supposed to apply to me.

    - threatened me with eternal damnation with same doctrine that doesn't apply to you.

    - supposed that cosmologists act like gods... heu, ok why? because they formulate theories... heu ok.

    - asked others if you could masturbate

    - asked others to pray for you

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • why i don't believe in god cont.:

because god's best and brightest live in castles funded by the gullible masses. because they routinely get arrested for fraud, racket, false representation, child abuse, prostitution, and mass murder. because the weather makes lightning, not Thor. because religion has always been damn wrong, every damn time about every single damn thing, because idiots like konman001 are sooo quick to forget crimes and STILL HAVE THE NERVE TO FLAUNT THEIR BIBLE AT US.

  • my offer still stands: OPEN THE FUCKING BOOK AND PROVE ME WRONG!

do i have an issue with a wife beater, a child fucker, a mass murderer? no, i don't if he's in a book. but i will stand up and arrest any real person who actively defend justify and misrepresent him, so that my children are free.

    forever

  • yes, the sun is an awesome symbol of the true God who created it.

  • The messenger can be anyone, mark speaks from the heart with wisdom and blunt reverence, and yes he is right about the chic'a'fying of modern churches and read your bibles ppl, its all in there, love is all, jesus forgives.

  • I have to agree with this video based on personal experience.

I used to be a First Person Shooter gamer, used to surf porn websites - but then God came, gave me fear in him, kicked my ass and now I am here in Japan evangelizing about Jesus.

  • dude that is so cool, i completely agree, unfortunately some church kids never were blessed enough to hang out with the kinda kids who dig porno and drugsand therefore dont really get how important the whole SHUTUP AND REPENT message is.

i tragically spent a year at my church sleeping w/my girlfriend, not because i wasnt loved, but because i could distort scripture to justify myself.

  • I have similar experience regarding "distorting" the message - I didn't go sleeping with a girl but masturbation has been a problem. I knew that pre-marital sex was wrong so I turned to masturbation and there were plenty Christians (including on YouTube) who were saying that masturbation is OK. At 35 years of age, not being married and evangelizing in a country where majority of people don't know God, temptation of sin can be very strong - pray that God gives me strength.

  • And did god give you anything? NO HE DIDN'T! why? BECAUSE GOD DOESN'T EXIST!!!

  • bless you brother

  • "tough guy" Driscoll... you folks who take this clown seriously with all his fake macho affectations, the sneakers, the gruff voice, got to get real. He shows his hatred in a big way. I don't care for Crhistians, he is one example why. Joel Osteen, I can respect.

  • Joel Osteen is an opportunist and a con man, just like Bill Clinton, but not even that manly. Driscoll, on the other hand, at least has 'some' healthy instincts. I appreciate your imput Panzerguy, but if you're not a part of the Christ Club, then why should Christians listen to you? Kazars and other anti-Christs are forever doing that to Christians..telling them how to better Christians.

  • and if you have a problem with it.....make the case through a video response/rebuttal. Just remember to back it up with Scripture and DO NOT attack the person........CAUSE that would be quite telling.

  • This guy gets it......Praise the Lord for Blunt Authentic Honesty from Men like Mark Driscoll.

  • This dude is a beast. Bangin!

  • Praise GOD for Pastor Mark Driscoll!

  • @anabannana45 praise reason for the fall of christianity and all dogma. jesus is a psychopath and a megalomaniac. mark is a spiritual terrorist that threatens people with hell. message is" bow down to the father and obey or suffer like the worm that you are" good moral people reject this message. mark can spew his rhetoric but he can back it up with logic. the less christian our society gets the better. maybe he wants to go back to the dark ages when Calvin his hero burned people at the stake.

  • @robaquarian What is good moral people? In fact, what is morality? We are products of natural selection. Morality is in a sense religious, even if you don't put a name to it. Therefore, why was Calvin's act of burning people at the stake wrong? I guess they were just not fit to continue. Survival of the fittest, I guess Calvin was the stronger one.

  • @DNGUYEN88 thats a fallacy to assume that if someone accepts the FACT of Darwinian evolution that they advocate social darwinism.most athiests are humanists. morality is not inherently religious. you need reason to be moral. morality means minimizing unessisary harm in the world. your morality is might makes right, do what the master tells you to. your sick god is about torturing people genocide, killing children, just when his vanity is offended.the bible is the most immoral book written.

  • @robaquarian I also wanted to note that your comment about Christianity not bringing anything good to the world is quite ignorant. I just looked up on Forbes largest charities and the top 3 are of Christian start-ups. Not saying that theists or atheists aren't charitable but your statement is rather incorrect and reckless.

  • @DNGUYEN88 try to think for your elf instead of repeating what some idiot preacher tells you. and why not ills jews in the holacaust? arent they going to hell anyway? what hilter did was nothing compared what god is gonna do to them. any system that is based on threats of violence is morally bankrupt. christianity has not brought anything good to this world. only division war and ignorance. get a clue. your logic sucks. i never said i was an atheist. i just dont believe in the alpha male god.

  • @robaquarian So, there is no intrinsic sense of morality than? I'm not even arguing anything else here. You never said you were an atheist, I never said I was religious. I'm just debating on the philosophical argument of where morality derives. If it is reason, than it's just a religious code that humans have put together (hence my religious comment), there is no true morality is there. So if I do something wrong, it's not truly wrong, only when we've reasoned it to be wrong. Right?

  • i can't believe this video was "banned" at it's conference because it left out female church planters. *rolls her eyes*

  • Women church planters is not Biblical.

  • Okayyy... That's what I'm saying. It's a ridiculous reason to ban a video. Why would you downrate me if you agree with me?

  • Only according to that interpretation, of course. There are others that believe differently, please be sensitive to that.

  • The bigger problem here is that Mark's view of Jesus is incomplete and ultimately unscriptural. The image of "Jesus as tough guy" may be appealing to young men, but it is not the whole picture of Jesus and does not paint a true picture of who Jesus is. Mark does not seem to be interesting in developing a complete picture of Christ, simply the one that fits most neatly into his own ideology. This is very problematic and unfortunate.

  • If you make a claim that it is unscriptural, at least back it up with some scripture.

You also make accusations that you have very little foundation for: Driscoll has apologized in the past when he was shown to be wrong.

Driscoll's focus tends to be a bit heavier on the "manly" side of Christ than it perhaps should be, but it's in reaction to the plethora of people who extremely emphasize only the compassionate and "peace loving" sides of Jesus.

  • Sir,

Please provide scriptural basis for the use of soldier metaphor in support Christ's tenants. You ask gdargan to prove a negative, a request that is impossible and futile on its face.

You need to establish how the "plethora of people" are well guided towards the "compassionate and Peace Loving Side of Jesus" via imagery of soldiering, war, death and destruction. I believe this is complete hypocrisy and would like someone to tell me why I am wrong.

  • First, you have been provided with ample scripture from other users, you simple choose to ignore it.

Second, you purposefully missread what I wrote, and since you have no intention of actually trying to understand what I said, I see no point in responding to you.

  • The problem perceived here may be simply due to the fact that this single short video is not attempting or able to provide a picture of Jesus' character in its full depth; it may be just trying to home in on one oft-neglected aspect of his character: that Jesus was not just the "gentle Jesus meek and mild" image that we know of mostly today but was also tough when he had to be.

  • Being faced with opposition that not only sought to undermine him and his cause both mentally, emotionally and spiritually and ultimately to also torture and take his physical life in the most barbaric, cruel and humiliating way possible. To do this requires a large degree of toughness. Jesus was able to be both gentle when he needed to be and tough when he needed to be; that is the measures of a real man and one that is largely missing in men today.

  • Mark has done it again. He's a General in today's church recruiting the masculine men to advance the kingdom.

He's a true apostle and prophet in the church and as such, isn't accepted by much of the church (primarily women and feminine men), like the apostles and prophets of the old and new testaments!

Masculine men, get ready for war!!!

  • Mark is playing soldier and feels himself honored through his cro magnon archetypes of his penis. You seem wanting to enter the sand box to play with him and ultimately accomplish nothing except inflate your own ego.

Maybe you should read up on Golda Mier, Cleopatra and Joan of Arc before you unsuspectingly get owned by a representative of the vagina bearing gender.

  • His message probably isn't accepted by "much of the church" because much of the church doesn't consist of masculine men. And there isn't a darn thing wrong with that. A masculine macho man is NOT more of a man than a more "feminine" man. Get over yourself.

  • FANTASTIC VIDEO!!! We need more of this!

  • What do you did 'fantastic' about it?

  • Exactly. As I said, "There is an epistemological argument of origins that is getting in the way of anything you say actually mattering." No amount of typing until you're blue in the fingers will change the fact that we have completely different world-views. And because of that, I see your position to be completely irrelevant. There is only one God and he can claim intellectual rights to anything he chooses.

  • An argument of origins is not our separator. Your claim to know ultimate truth and have ultimate license to behave as you see fit is. You avow anarchy yet I find no examples of successful ones so I wonder what makes you align yourself with failed philosophy.

What makes you believe your interpretation of origins is more accurate than a religious Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Taoist, Mormon etc... ?

  • He's right because Jesus was right, and Mark is reiterating what Jesus said during his earthly ministry and through the prophets and apostles in scripture.

  • Maybe you can try to answer my question.

Additionally, what is he 'right' about?

  • People like you who place too much esteem on a soldier's sacrifice for this country or any other, are really co-opting an idea that first and foremost belongs to God. This is the whole point of Acts 17, Paul's message at the Aereopagus, and the intentional choice of Mars Hill as the name of Driscoll's church. ANYTHING is fair game if used to further the Gospel. That includes war memorials and cemeteries.

  • Sir,

I don't believe the issue at hand involves my appropriate placement of esteem. I believe the issue, and are personal priorities, for myself relate to intellectual honesty and peaceful coexists between divergent believers.

From your statements I sense we do not share similar priorities or concerns.

  • Eric,

There is an epistemological argument of origins that is getting in the way of anything you say actually mattering. To you, Driscoll is co-opting heroes to push his religious agenda. But, to those of us that know God exists, we know that God, and his followers have every right to use anything that God has created in order to make analogy and appeal to HIS truth. (cont.)

  • Sir,

Per your statement I interpret your view as; "Knowers of my God have every right to use any means on earth to further that agenda". That's quite a bit of latitude given the variety and diversity amongst self-described believers. It also seems to promote lying e.g.: We'll make a video using imagery of soldiers who died for non-religious principles to promote our religious ideology. Do those ends really justify the means?

  • Believe it or not, there is FAR more unity amongst believers in terms of interpretation of scripture and overall purpose than some people would like you to believe. The notion of this "diversity" is mostly bandied around by people who are out just to discredit Christianity. Yes, of course some exists, but it is not that great, and where we do disagree it is usually minor &/or very amicable...

  • Please note I am speaking primarily of Christendom at its grass-roots level, not organisational-level but, even so, that would not be as bad as made out to be.

I am sure you could point to some examples but you will find, on objective & thorough examination, these are minority cases relative to Christendom as a whole, particularly on a global scale.

  • To those who would contend this point, this is something you would only fully appreciate from an inside perspective as opposed to someone with a view from the outside who informs their opinions from a controversy-obsessed news media.

  • Thank you for the considered response.

Do you believe the variation between Mormon, Catholic and Pentecostal sects of Christianity agrees with your claim about the overall degree of unity between them?

I must say find it interesting that nobody in this discussion actually addresses my questions directly.

  • If we can accept that a Christian is someone who believes the Bible is the word of God (a pretty standard definition) I have no interest then in including in that definition a group who gives equal or higher weight to a totally different and contradicting book (Book of Mormon). If you do that you may as well start including other religions altogether. That is why Mormons are called Mormons and not Christians.

  • Ok, so which bible or version there of is found in common agreement? I have yet to find one.

  • I suggest you look at any mainstream translation. There may be some slight differences in emphasis or phrasing due to the different ways of translating other languages into English (due to variation in the English language); you will find, however, that these differences are not contradictions (which would be a problem you would have a reason to object to).

  • In my above comment I could also include those who give equal or greater weight to Papal tradition over the Bible (this is not condoned in the Bible) but if we say we mean those Catholics who accept the Bible as the complete & inspired word of God, yes there is still a great deal more we share in common and I would happily fellowship with them as Christians even if I know there are things we would disagree on. Those even make for good dinner conversations!

  • I really don't understand what it is that would serve as the fundamental driving force towards unification. Truth be told, the answer to this question is both my fundamental yearning and source of consternation. I don't know how to build bridges with people who aren't able to agree on some fundamental basis that defines a common reference point.

  • The truth of the matter is that 'the church' is a building FULL of very damaged people that need Christ, and so are exactly where they need to be. But... we're all damaged and need grace, so we all of us do harm to others from time to time. Laying claim to Christianity doesn't remove that from our lives. So, for the harm that was done to you by whomever claimed to be a Christian I would offer my sincere apologies and ask that you consider the 'human factor'.

  • As for Driscoll, this guy is no exception. He's a human with VERY human tendencies. If you were to spend a month or so listening to his sermons you would see what I mean by that. What I can say is that he's worked hard and long to introduce Christ into the lives of those around him. In the end, it is always a personal choice. What he presents is the choice.

  • The most expensive house, planned and constructed by the most skillful and competent planners and builders, if constructed upon a fissure, merely provides a false sense of security. And the occupants may very well know this but cannot formulate an exit strategy.

  • As for the choice of venue for this particular film, I was in the armed forces, I have friends who are rotating into and out of Iraq as we speak and take more exception to someone speaking for 'us' than I do for someone 'walking on the graves' of dead soldiers. Just my two cents, spend it any damn way you please ;-)

  • In the U.S. our armed forces are controlled by civilian oversight due to our constitution. Thus the conduct of military members and the services in general is the responsibility of citizens. If you revisit the oath you pledged entering the military you will see that you swore to uphold the constitution. That is your primary responsibility and pledge (before your god). So its not "you vs. us" it's "US" defending a constitution and our personal freedom and liberty without religious motifs.

  • That's what I thought... large words in rapid succession are meant to make you and your point relevant.

  • One thing I will say is that nothing you've posted harms my sense of right and wrong (which is based at heart on the Bible's teachings). It's derisive and hurtful to relate an entire sub-culture to a virus, but you know that and make the connection willingly. That doesn't hurt because I'm grounded in my faith. It does strengthen my opinion that someone along the way has done damage to you in the name of Christianity.

  • Once again, for that I am sorry and would ask that you afford the same 'rational thought' that you have applied to other sections of society to your investigation of the Word. Who knows, you might find something to it if you approached it with an open mind.

  • I believe if you read through my comments I have asked many yet unanswered questions. Most responses, your included, try to construct me as 'damaged' and 'anti-Christian' rather than address postulates of your faith.

How do you justify the hypocrisy of using images of America's military in support of religious ideals when the foundation of our country separated church and state and has no national religion?

  • As you walk up the steps to the building which houses the U.S Supreme Court you can see near the top of the building a row of the world's law givers and each one is facing one in the middle who is facing forward with a full frontal view . It is Moses and he is holding the Ten Commandments.

  • As you enter the Supreme Court courtroom, the two huge oak doors have the Ten Commandments engraved on each lower portion of each door.

  • James Madison, the fourth president, known as "The Father of Our Constitution" made the following statement, "We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God."

  • Patrick Henry, that patriot and Founding Father of our country said, "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, not on religions but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ."

  • If you believe Mr. Henry was more than a majority of one your ego knows no bounds.

  • The removal of Christianity from the creation of this nation and any of its more important documents is a stretch at best and at worst an actual misrepresentation of the facts of history.

  • I would say the same about the insertion of such.

  • I suggest John Adams by David McCullough. It is not a 'Christian' book and the author makes no claim concerning his religious beliefs. He works hard to state the facts as they are available. Read this telling portrayal of the creation of our nation, cross reference it with the list of resources used to compile the biography and I don't think you'll be able to make the case that the consitution was drafted by a majority of atheists. It's quite the contrary.

  • The founding fathers never meant to remove religion from the landscape of our society. They meant to insure that all those who are so willing can freely practice their religion of choice (which includes atheists, since the mere belief in the absence of God is in fact by definition a religious belief).

  • My dear friend, if you don't understand by now that that reference by Madison, as with other founders, is a plea for agreement to a common code of conduct derived not by a conviction in the existence of a god but rather a framework to coexist amongst those of divergent beliefs understood by agnostic experience, you might want to renew your library card and put it to use.

  • No matter how someone chooses to interpret Madison's intent (something I won't try to do here, but rather will rely on the man's actual words alone), the fact remains that his reference to the Biblical Ten Commandments makes a clear and concise case for the inclusion of not only religion, but Christianity specifically in the creation of this nation.

  • Your belief that the ten commandments is the result of Christianity is putrid enough example of your contorted historical perspective. At least admit that your advocating our nation's foundation in Judaism, the source of those commandments.

  • "Your belief that the ten commandments is the result of Christianity is putrid enough example of your contorted historical perspective." Read the first book of the Bible and note God's references to the trinity. Christianity shows that the entire Bible (Old and New Testament) is proclamation of Christ's coming and thus Christianity. Putrid is an intersting choice of words...;-)
