Dogs experience REM sleep just like humans, waking them up disrupts this. It is a fact that without sleep a human being will die, Im not saying your killing your dog, but I think mental health could be a concern.
@CondemnedPatriot - WTF seriously? The most ridiculous statement I've ever heard. So if we are camping and something comes rummaging through the camp don't wake the dog? I don't think so.
@das1418 Mine does it as soon as it gets dark outside and someone's ringing the doorbell. I mean if it weren't my dog I'd probably be freaked out by this noise. It's really somewhat impressive howling!
Did you get him as a puppy? If so were? I'm hoping to get another soon, but as a puppy, I got Molly when she was two, so never could teach her much, still she's the best dog I have ever had, and now's how to handle cattle.
I have two RRB brothers who are 16 months old. They get along perfectly and all the time too. Wonderful conduct they interact sharing playing working as a team, and can body slam while airborne.
I waited three years to find Two so they would always have playmate and never really fight like two dogs can sometimes over females or food etc.
As for food its "Fromms' dog food for my buddies, no gas no throwing up and quality that started in 1904. Not part of any sales or a company I just care,
I have a rodasian too, he does it all the time. Wen he was a pup he slept in a bench too. If he sees the bench now he wants in, but he too big now haha
I heard you shouldn't wake them when they are sleeping and seem like they are in hot pursuit of something but it was for health reasons. May similar to a human sleep walking.
Never heard the reason why a person shouldn't wake a dog when he is twitching and barking and even growling etc. Never heard the reason why not to wake sleep walkers either but if for no other reason it's disruptive and they are in a different state then just sleeping I think. You hear all kinds of things though and someone even likened a dog twitching to something like a epileptic seizure in a person which I have to say I doubt as dogs wake right up and it seems like a dream more than anything.
Oryon is scared of thunderstorms and doesnt like going out in the rain either. He will go if it is just sprinkling out, but if it is doing more than that, he will hold it till it stops! Crazy dog.
Actually, I have taken classes/seminars in animal behavior, have worked with, and have owned dogs my whole life. My dog is not scared of waking up, he is used to it because he does it every day. If there was a stranger there that woke him up, yes he would be a little apprehensive. My dog has complete trust in me and I in him.
Mine doesnt really like baths or being chased with the hose on hot days, but I havent had the chance to take him to a lake or open waters. Theres no where like that where I live.
wow.. thats awesome!! i want an RR soooo bad!!!! i dont think my wife would be able to handle one tho. plus its a bit pricey around here, i think 4k a dog or something like that. ur lucky to have one!!!! are they a handfull? i bet they chew stuff up like rotties do when im not home!
I paid about 1K for mine. He isnt to much of a handful, just when he wants an over abundance of attention. He doesnt chew much either. He did have a thing for a while when he was a puppy with taking shoe laces out of shoes though. Not really chewing them, but running around the house with them like it is a victory for him to get them out of the shoes. It was pretty impressive though.
health probs on RR prob come from lack of bloodline..I love the breed and had joy of meeting a 100% line RR...OH MY GOD!!! big boy!...they seem well bred anywhere but rhodesia? I cant find a local breeder for 100% line..can anyonw help?
Oh..dogs dreaming is pent up energy sometimes..watch for that!
You are not crazy at all. RR's are wonderful when trained right. Just dont let them get away with to much!!! Or the will think they can do it all the time. :) Kinda like mine.
yea there some genetic mutation there prone to were the the ridge sometimes is foremed inside out and it connects to there septum prty much ther in and out of doctors every few weeks to chek on it.
Its so hard to not wake them up when you are trying to catch them doing somthing funny in their sleep because they are so attentive!!! Even when sleeping! Good luck! I would love to see it!
Dogs dream too so maybe he was talking to another dog in his dream its hard to say my JRT does that sometimes too. RRs are super beautiful I love them. 5 stars for cuteness and a beautiful dog.
I loved it - Our RR would do the same thing and move his paws like he was running in his sleep! We just had to put him down because of some bizarre thing happened where his intestines got twisted (not bloat) and 4 feet of his intestines died inside of him. We did surgery and he survived for 3 weeks! The Vet had no idea why?
i had a female RR named Kenya who had blood cancer and she hung in there for little over 2 years having quimiotherapy (not sure thats the way it spells in english). what a brave animal, she would refuse to die even though she was in serious pain. then one day we had to put her to sleep, a bloody tragedy. lucky us she left us couple of young RR to keep the legend on!!!
I am so sorry to hear that -- and I love the name Kenya! We do know that our RR did not have cancer (we had constant blood work done for a month) so we will probably never know what cause his intestines to twist and his death.
I am so sorry to hear that. It is great to know you did all you could though (with the chemo and all). Alot of dog owners arnt as wonderful as you. She was lucky to be a part of your family.

lol cute my rr done that when she was nly 4 weeks old lol. i remember when she first came out her cage she was scared of everyone and every bone in her body was shaking. lol anyway please watch my one.
My beagle does the same thing when he sleeps! It's so cute, i touch his feet and he starts to move his legs chasing after whatever it is he's dreaming about. Do you think maybe it's an instinct thing? Cause RR's were originally used for lion hunting? How cool is that?
Beautiful dogs aren't they? Mine sleeps very lightly but should not be disturbed in this state, he has no idea where he is. I crated mine too but he is 120 lbs now and won't fit, arrh! If you search for lilmisscarrot here you can see a couple of vids of him being stupid.
my 8 wk old rr does the same thing. i think hes chasing rabbits but he hasnt even seen one yet?? nice dog by the way, crate training is the way to go and they love them. its their own little den.
Hi! I have a RR and she also snores and makes this funny noises, oh, and she kicks as if she were running!! So hilarious!! I have to upload videos of her because i really really love Rasha (that is her name). Your RR is beautiful, but tell me something, i want to keep a male puppy next time she breeds but i am afraid the puppy will be peeing his territory all over my house. How did you manage to train yours? Thanks!
I just got him neutered at 17 weeks. Some vets dont like when you neuter that early, but mine had never even lifted his leg in the house!! He even squats when he goes outside!!! That and I started him off crate training too. Helped to potty train him right away!! He was potty trained in a matter of 2 days! :)
I have a 3 year old male not neutered. He looks and acts exactly as the dog in the video does.Got him at 12 weeks, took him outside to do his thing on a timely basis and had only one mess of each kind in over 2 1/2 years. Both within the first 2 days. The easiest potty training I have ever dealt with. He didn't lift a leg ....the one time he pee's in the house. He still squats as much to pee as it hikes.I just hope your dog doesn't get lazy and fat because you took his energy away.
A RR male should not normally pee in his own house unless he has no choice (it is already his domain and has his scent). Mine seemed to train himself as soon I got him home. He has not been neutered.
Oh no way! My male RR does the same thing when he gets into a deep sleep. The growling, whimpering, and sounds like he has the hiccups, lol! It must be an RR thing! ;)
very sweet. He's dreaming. I hope it was a good dream. =)
