1:16 to 1:20, and particularly when the Phantom sings "...in shadow I hide..."
...does anybody else feel like they just fell in love?! I'm not a music person so I have no idea why this sounds so beautiful (perhaps its because the instrument and Gerard's voice hit the same note [I think]), but GOOD GOD is it splendid!!! <3
i have no idea how all of you think the movie surpasses the sage performances.. i have seen in Sydney, NYC, Melbourne... at least the leads in the stage performances can really sing and do it 8 times a week
It is not just with this movie... every time they turn a stage production into a movie they screw it up somehow
@Waxingbeauty Emmy really CAN sing and she's better than 90% of the stage versions, and most of them are actually opera singer so that says a lot. Stage performances are also overacted and not very realistic. The only thing that screwed up this movie is having terrible-acting Gerard Butthead as the Phantom.
@soul416 "Gerard Butthead as the Phantom." - you can't even write his surname right and you're trying to judge his acting))) Butler is the first who acts really and naturally. If you don't like it - watch film with Lon Chaney)))
I love this part of the movie. The first time I saw it, I was totally enchanted. The Phantom is so powerful with his voice, but it's beautiful. <3 <3 I love you Phantom!!
@Pokemon76MayXDrew Not even close. Butler can't sing or act, so it wasn't that hard considering who they hired to do it - hence why it made like nothing in the box office. The stage version isn't any better, Emmy has a better voice for the music anyway, plus the Phantom on-stage generally looks like a woman with lipstick on.
To truly appreciate The Phantom of the Opera you have to see it live. I saw it in Las Vegas last year and it was absolutely breathtaking. I do still love the movie but it will never live up to what I had experienced from the theatre. <3
...sorry, also just wanted to say that I wish they hadn't of left out the Loud thumping bass in the mirror scene. The bass added to the suspense as the Phantom beckoned Christine toward the mirror, and I just wasn't feeling it in the movie.
My thoughts, If you truely want to experience The Phantom, I would suggest you go see the stage version and not rely on the re-adapted version they used for the movie.
Being a suporter of the stage version, I did not like how they humanized the phantom so much in the movie. ie: they showed him locking the door in the mirror scene, he was shown switching bottles for Carlotta's voice in Il Muto, and they had him walk through a mirror to end the show. These were all done 'magically' in the stage prodution, and if they make the phantom dissapear beneath his cloak on stage, surely they could do the same on film...
But not everyone has seen a stage version so you have to realize that most people need that extra two seconds like you said of him switching bottles you cant just expect everyone to know that, ppl are sorta stupid when it comes to musicals. they dont understand like people that watch them constantly like alot of the people that watch this on youtube
Also, actually-- my only complaint about the movie version (being a Phantom fan AND a special effects makeup artist) was Gerard's Phantom makeup-- it was good.... if you wanted to go for someone with, eh, a few relatively nasty burns here and there. I'm sorry, but if you're gonna do the Phantom, he needs to look like he's missing half his freaking face due to a housefire, not just an uper layer of epidermis or two due to a wayward chimanaya. Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent comes to mind suddenly.
Eh, Emmy is real hit or miss with me. Some stuff she rocks the s**t out of (like this, for example) and other stuff leaves some to be desired (like her ending vocalizations in this, yeesh-- granted, we can't all be Sarah Brightman). All in all, I think she did pretty decent!
I think she auditioned for Andrew Webber in his living room when she was 16. he picked the right girl I think. not only has great singing voice but she seems innocent, the way Christine should be portrayed.
ok umm...whoever says she didnt sing for real is stupid and wrong! everyone one in the movie sang their own parts except carlotta or whatever her name is...gosh!
@FantasmaLuna It says that Minnie Driver sung, not just the credits part, but sung as Carlotta. I am a total fan, and I always know this stuff because no one was dubbed I know for a fact! :) I'm 99% sure I'm right! :)
@phantomphan4ever1 No, I remember in the behind the scenes look, she talked about how she was the only one who was dubbed because she wasn't an opera singer. The main reason she was chosen for the role was because of how funny she was.
@FantasmaLuna Are you positive? Because I swear I watched all of them on 2-disc edition and even more like interviews on youtube. I didn't hear that, so can you tell me where that was... not that I don't believe you. :)
@phantomphan4ever1 I think it was an interview with the cast on The View when they were promoting the movie.
It also says in the imdb trivia that she had no operatic experience and was dubbed by Margaret Preece. It's also pretty easy to tell the difference between the two voices are when she sings "Learn to be Lonely." My father actually works in opera and he said that Preece's voice sounded like it had taken YEARS of operatic training and there was training in Driver's voice, but not operatic.
@FantasmaLuna Well thanks! But when I heard phantom went the view i looked it up and it says no one was dubbed! But I'm assumming IMDB is more accuracte than the View
@FantasmaLuna Then it's better apparently to not have trained operatically, considering that most opera singers including the original Christine (Sarah Brightman) - run their words together and can't enunciate. I prefer Minnie's voice because at least you can understand the words that she sings. And it's funny that Preece "Clearly" has operatic training and yet she's just a teacher - so she's obviously not that good.
okay. i LOVE this movie and the phantom, and the song. but i just hate her expression at 1:33 to 2:04. ur lips are so weird and she isn't even singing. oh an she was 16 when she did this not 18
WOW! His voice was at the same time little bit of scary/really calling/Just simply awesome! I love this scene! I'm glad that Christine chose Erik over Raoul, in this scene.
hmmm....i just prefer him..because of his delicate..and he's fragile..i prefer him as the phantom..even..he doesn't need mask to look so pretty in this scene..no mask..i just prefer him as he is..sweet scene..just delicate...

I must confess that i HATE opera...BUT, this movie has made up my mind., the way they make this musical opera...it's so...outstanding! it's amazing! Perhaps it's a little bit rock also? I love it :)
One of the best scenes in the film! I love how when Emmy is singing "Angel my soul was weak, forgive me" she hangs her head like she's ashamed. I also love how she uses her eyes to express her emotions! (She does this before her AOM duet with Meg too, when the Phantom is whispering her name.)
That's my favorite part. In my opinion, Gerry's best vocal part in the whole movie is when sings "I am there inside". It gives me goosebumps every time!
Ahhhhhh! How hypnotic is that! I love this part of the movie and then...DUH! duh duh duh duh duuuhhhhh! Awsome movie. I also love the music. Thanks again for this video. :)

I used to hate her voice, but the more I hear it, the more I like it. Sort of grows on you. But I do think that sarah brightman is better.

She looks like she's drugged at 1:58, but I heard the Phantom would sometimes control her mentally.

I've watched interviews with these two. They seem pretty down to earth. Gerry is just damn funny.

That's my favorite part. In my opinion, Gerry's best vocal part in the whole movie is when sings "I am there inside". It gives me goosebumps every time!
