  • Todays raps is more degrading to blacks than this was.

  • thumbs up for the simpsons

  • I like to watch, Eve.

  • @ 3:10 is that a french man sticking a gun to a pilot? Cheech and Chong have about every stereotype down in this vid

  • Do you all know who was playing the electric guitar on this cut? It was someone who loved humanity and was larger than himself; one of the Beatles! George Harrison!

  • It's COMEDY people!!! stop taking it so f'ing seriously. It's a caricature of what africans look like and what they enjoy... basketball. It is not offensive unless you are an uptight jerk. Thank god we live in america and a video like this can be watched... seems like some people would have this yanked because they are just guilty white liberals. The whites in the video are not characterized too favorably either... its a damn joke!!! Don't analyze it as offensive. JEEEZ

  • Has anyone ever found out who the original musicians on this video were?...You'd be surprise at the big names they got to play on it...C&C! "RIGHT ON!"

  • that's George Harrison on guitar

  • This is so sweet :) The ladies had big sexy butts, the blacks big lips, the whites bald or old..LOL and the song is the shiggity

  • Can you imagine what they would say now with a white man playing a Chinese man like Charlie Chan LOL

  • @deaconblue9038 Tommy Chong is half Chinese for real, if that's what your talking about.

  • @johnbleroy No what I meant was how back in the day,Hollywood and so forth used to take a smidgen of the "typical" race and exaggerate the hell out of it. For instance in this video the African-American's lips where enormous. In the old show Charlie Chan his eyes where so slanted I can't imagine it was easy for him to see Al Jolson's depiction of a black person, made them seem as black as coal with large lips and tight kinky hair. You couldn't (nor should) get away with that in our time.

  • Being There.

  • Did anyone else see the terrorist in the air plane cockpit with the gun! I was like WAIT... What!?

  • imagine if this song/video was released today? Cheech and Chong would be in jail for more than Marijuana possession

  • you have to be really high for this shit

  • Cheech Marin - Tyrone Shoelaces (Lead Vocals) Darlene Love - Cheerleader (voice) Michelle Phillips - Cheerleader (voice) Ronnie Spector - Cheerleader (voice) George Harrison - lead guitar Klaus Voormann - bass Jim Karstein (often misspelled as Carstein) - drums Jim Keltner - percussion Carole King - electric piano Nicky Hopkins - piano Tom Scott - saxophone Billy Preston - organ Eric Clapton - (uncredited lead guitar)
  • @framzoid Are you making this up??!!LOL everyone of these peeps are famous musicians LOL??!!

  • @coreale52 Actually it's pretty well documented and completely for real. Those two goofballs hung with some heavyweights back then. Chong has said the ones that wanted to participate but couldn't be there due to other obligations was even more of an eye opener than the ones that did...

  • This is so racist...

  • Take the "ball" off your backs! Quit profoundly symbolic. Satire at it's best!

  • the guy at 1:43 has got a boner

  • 2:51 porno

  • I love this, but agree that some of these images of African Americans are a little disturbing today. Still, a look at this style of animation in the seventies, (something that grew out of Underground Comix and R. Crumb) the idea was to defuse every stereotype by owning it ourselves, much the way Lenny Bruce did with language, and later urban street culture did using the n word. For what it's worth---this is still a work of genius.

  • @misspeaches251 - Thank you Misspeaches251, you hit the nail on the head. No one loved this Cheech and Chong parody more than the Black community. This was UNDERGROUND humor when humor was funny and not used for promoting underlying prejudiced and hatred as it is in many cases today.

  • @misspeaches251 Something I have yet to understand...If African Americans using the "N" word as a term of endearment (for lack of a better description) with one another ,removes it's power as a slant. Then why isn't it okay for me,as a caucasian,to do the same with my black friends?????

  • @misspeaches251 whats the n word? Nice? Naughty? nimrod?

  • @misspeaches251 Looks more like MAD Magazine than Crumb

  • lol everything is stereotyped or over exaggerated... love it cause its kinda true

  • I've got more moves than ex lax

  • Comedians can get away with anything and this video proves it. No race is immune to a comedians wit. If you look at the Cosby Kids animated TV cartoon you see the same features that are present here. Bill is black isn't he? With so many problems today do we really need to call this racist? IMO, I don't think so...

  • This is a parody of a real soul classic called "Love Jones."

  • The instrumental backing on this is actually really kickass.

  • i used to think the character's name was basketball jones. then i realized it was tyrone shoelaces. then many years later i figured out his name was a play on words - - "tie your own shoelaces."

  • George Harrison on guitar.

  • Comment removed

  • Holy!,...I never saw the cartoon before......that couldn't be Bakshi could it?........the 70's ruled!

  • @todtubetod it's not bakshi, but around the same time bakshi was working on "coonskin."

  • Wow what a wierd and funny song,I heard this first in the space jam soundtrack

  • This is so racist. lol

  • @SevenShahanshah only if youre looking for racism or to be offended

  • I have an ice cream jones, and I love ice cream cones.

  • 1:55 Nazi!

  • I've got more moves than ex lax

  • Ain nothin like the 70's AWESOME WEIRD SONG I didn't here in 34yrs. Cheech n Chong AWESOME! make me wanna smoke more weed!

  • There was a time, back in ancient history, when Cheech and Chong ruled the world.

  • this is like one of the most racist things i've ever seen lol. i love the song though

  • @AdamRezz this is really one of the most racist things you have ever seen?really? do you live under a rock??

  • @whitemanwaydownsouth are you being sarcastic or something?

  • @AdamRezz not even a little. if this is the most racist thing you have seen, do a lil youtube search "king shabazz wants to kill cracker babies" in this day of everything being about racism and political correctness, if this is the one of most racist thing you have seen, you are not paying attention.

  • @whitemanwaydownsouth maybe I don't go looking for this kinda stuff? Ever think of that? You clearly seem to. But that's your disease, not mine.

  • @AdamRezz if you find this racist, yuo do go looking for racism. this is a cartoon. and if this is one of the most racist things you have seen, you need to look around. with things like nazis, kkk, and the black panthers and all the real racism out there, calling this racist is misuse of the term racist, or some serious racehustling. the disease is yours, political correctness and bieng naive

  • @whitemanwaydownsouth you're a fool

  • @zagomyego LOL care to be more specific?

  • if i was a cartoon, i'd totally nail one of those cheerleaders

  • this song is epic. george harrison on the guitar

  • @GMack17 I don't know what possessed me to look for Basketball Jones tonight, but I swear it was just so I could learn that Harrison was on the guitar. What a surprise! I remember when this song came out and don't recall a thing about Harrison, but media wasn't what it is now. You could miss a lot. : )

  • @calendarpage I bought the album "Los Cochinos" back in 1973. I was a huge Cheech & Chong fan then. I was surprised to see they had recorded a song called "Basketball Jones." Then I saw who the musicians were and was surprised again to see George Harrison on guitar. That is some sweet guitar work indeed.

  • 1:56 lmao It shows a Nazi who hid in Argentina (loads of them did) you can see by their colour that they aint German.

  • If you want to see somethin funny, check out the movie Being There (1975). This cartoon is in the movie.

  • @scopelite website 4 the movie?

  • He'll yeah

  • THIS is music

  • I thought of this after reading about the riot over Nike Air Jordon sneakers! Thanks for posting.

  • This isn't really meant to be racist. It was just a different culture in the 70's. These days everyone thinks everything is racist.

  • @retto228 Yes, That unfortunately is a shame

It's even worse now after and since the 2008 election

  • quite possibly the most bad ass cortoon on the planet

  • im gon 1 on 1 against the whole world, left handed yall

  • you are welcome to your dream but it's still racist. I suppose you feel that the word nigger is'nt derogatory either?

  • I thought this was obviously satirical

  • dislike this if cheech and chong's smoke signals brought you here

  • who is the man with the glasses Cee Lo Green?

  • @ric4022 That's funny. I was just thinking he looked like CeeLo!

  • "I got more moves than ex lax." Rolling on the floor.

  • homer version is better

    shuahsuahsu

  • Fun.

  • The 70s were fucking weird.

  • @aavallone Absolutely. And I'm so glad I grew up then.

  • @aavallone Every past decade seems weird once enough time has gone by.

  • What is this I don't even

  • Did Ralph Bashki animate this?

  • @saj8 No, Paul Gruwell did

  • I first heard this song on a Cheech & Chong LP (I'm old!!). I Love the song, but hate this racist cartoon that goes with it.

  • @Kwekwe What's racist about it? The characters, white, black, yellow, are exaggerations of what they are in reality. Every damn thing now is considered racist. Just stop it and allow yourself to laugh at it. It's funny.

  • @chuggachuggawoowoo the lips that make the black characters look sub human, thats whats racist about it. The white characters look human the black ones dont.

  • @Kwekwe If you think the white characters look human, then there is something wrong with you.

  • @Kwekwe Yeah, that referee totally looks like a normal white person. How's about you relax, this isn't the race riots; it's Cheech and Chong

  • @Kwekwe ...Do you think the white characters look like white humans that you know? They're all drawn as goofy-looking geeks with no lips at all and beady eyes. So what? Like I said...they're exaggerating the physical charactistics of people. In case you haven't noticed, black people often have thick lips, white people often have thin lips. How about the slanty eyed yellow Asians in the video? It's all in fun. I was a teenager when this came out. NO ONE complained about it.

  • Kentucky's best player is a basketball Jones, and I've a t-shirt saying we got a basketball Jones.

  • timeless

  • This song is so awesome after a few bowls. :)

  • If you get passed the unflattering animation, there is some interesting commentary the video/song exposes.

  • i was singing this in class today!

  • This song in this kids ears back then was awsome! Great one liners. I got more moves than Ex-lax, I need help ladies and gentalmens... back then as as 4th grade kid listening to CKLW out of Detroit... MJ, Marvin, Al Green, CCR, Alice Cooper OMG so many songs, white black shhh.... the music man.... the music couldn't see it , didnt care, can only hear it :-)

  • WTF

  • I remember listening to this song in my dorm. I still think it is a funny song. The video was done at the same time Fritz the Cat came out. I guess the fans of the NBA have a basketball jones about right now.

  • Cartoons always make people look funny. Hell look at the Simpsons. Have you ever seen black people look any funnier than white folks in the Simpsons?

  • George Harrison played the guitar on this

  • I think this was absolutely the STUPIDEST song that came out in the 70's. Picture yourself with ONLY a transistor radio, enduring this thing to the (taking FOREVER) END!! When the D.J. would play it, all of us would just go....."OH NO!!! NOOOOO!!!!"

  • ...a portion thereof...didja see the guy in the red fez??

  • I'm black and this song and video is just beautiful ain't a motherfuckin' thing racist about this shit I use to dream like this lil kid. Like I was born to play this sport.

  • @TrashScores Hahaha.... Peter Sellers in the back of the limo. "I cant read... I can't write.. I like to watch TV".

  • Thumbs up if you heard this from Space Jam...

  • man how stoned where they when they made this hahaha

  • yeah some good old fashion racism hahaha well its not racist since cheech marin is mexican.

  • thumbs up if u didnt hear this song on the simpsons :)

  • Bassetbawl Jones

  • I think the most racist people are the people who think it's racist

  • @IgnatiusKalibas Dude are u kidding? The animations are depictions of black physical characteristics. U might wanna take a history of race relations class dude. At 0:36 u have depictions of the "mammy", a dude w oversized lips, the sambo & all. I'mma take a stab in the dark (no pun intended) & say that you're not black.

    - Sincerely, an African American male

  • @J0rdanY0ung417

    heheheheheh, stab in the dark.

    That was funny.

I think the video is cool, and furthermore that its caricature is okay, especially considering the attitude of the main character, his heroic role.

  • @ToothpickMcBrainy i laughed too

  • Comment removed

  • @J0rdanY0ung417 no I'm not African American, I'm Latino, who grew up in most backwoods small town pieces of crap racist places in Texas and Oklahoma. And probably have seen more racism i the past 34 years than alot of Geeks have seen Anime'. and now you brought up the race card, you probably are mad at the world just because your African american. To sum up, I don't use the color of my skin to be a prick

    -Sincerely, an American

  • @IgnatiusKalibas Haha nice try Dr. Phil but I'm not mad at the world at all...quite the opposite actually. The reason I brought up my race is to illustrate that as an AFRICAN AMERICAN, I find the depictions of AFRICAN AMERICANS in this video to be highly offensive. I never claimed that others can't know racism...I claimed that YOU didn't recognize the racism in this video & because it wasn't a negative depiction of your people, you don't find anything wrong with it..

  • @J0rdanY0ung417 Then you must find anything in the media showing blacks as offensive, considering they almost always show them like this.

  • @frylock1998 I'm not gonna sit up here & say that a lotta times we blacks don't bring a lotta shit on ourselves with the way a lotta us carry ourselves in public...the shit's actually embarrassing & downright frustrating. However, there ARE instances where the media portrayal of us isn't the most favorable. But shit like this in the video is blatantly offensive & are the very things we discussed in my race relations class years back in college.

  • @J0rdanY0ung417, the only other two things I think they are mostly shown are as a highschool or college students or a cop. Whether or not this is racist or not is hard to say, because they are shown like this all the time, and if it is, then they would have to shut the whole system down. I would'nt say this video is completely racist, it just shows blacks how they always are shown-either playing sports or being a criminal. I'm Mexican too, so I know how it is to be disliked because of your race.

  • @frylock1998 Right, I'm not saying the video is completely racist, I'm just kinda offended by the illustrations of the black characters in the video, particularly the ones in the background w their nappy hair & exaggerated big lips & all but it's whatever. Truth be told, I'm not even mad, I'm just like "wow really?" & was responding 2 the ppl who said this couldn't be construed as racist or offensive. I'm sorry that you've experienced discrimination because of your race. That sucks bro.

  • @IgnatiusKalibas Go back & re-read my original post to you. Just because I am offended by some of the things in this video doesn't mean I'm mad at the world. None of my gripes with depictions of the people in this video were inaccurate. Who are u to tell me how I should feel about it? If it were a depiction of the stereotypical Fu Manchu-type Asian w exaggeratedly slanted eyes I'd say the same thing so plz quit w the dime-store "YouTube psychoanalysis".

    - Sincerely, "mad at the world"

  • @J0rdanY0ung417 Haters wanna hate

  • @J0rdanY0ung417 And yes i have taken Ethnic Relations classes to try to understand why people hate each other because the simple fact that they are different. Just because we are not the same color doesn't mean that i don't know racism.

  • @IgnatiusKalibas

I understand what you're saying - sometimes people look too hard for there to be an offensive message contained in something that is superficially innocent; but the animation is, to some degree, racist, in my opinion. I don't think it ruins this video or makes it un-watchable because I still thought the song was catchy and the concept was funny.

  • @TMcFadden66 if we ever meet... i'll buy you a drink

  • with George Harrison on lead guitar!

  • if this video came out today it would have been slammed and banned.

  • Getting pumped up for NCAA basketball. WASHINGTON HUSKIES REPRESENT!
