  • My grandfather was telling my family about this song,we didnt believe him so i looked it up and sure enough here it is.

  • i was born in saginaw :)

  • Does anyone else think Joaquin Phoenix could also play Lefty in a movie as he did Johnny Cash?

  • @freedomlikesummer Not anymore!

  • awsome song

  • Buck Trent at that age means only one thing. This is a guest appearance on the Porter Waggoner Show.

  • Looks like Buck Trent to me, the guitar, banjo playing musician, he can do things with a banjo, that most of us wish we could do.

  • 5inthehole

This is what I found. In the beginning of 1951, Lefty formed the Western Cherokees, led by Blackie Crawford. Soon, the Western Cherokees became his primary band for both live and recording situations. Regards

  • First of all, let's clear up some facts about Lefty.Country singer, songwriter. Born William Orville Frizzell, on March 31, 1928, in Corsicana, Texas. On July 19, 1975, Frizzell died of a massive stroke; he was 47 years old. He was honored with election into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1982. Now for the song itself. Co written by Don Wayne, a tool and die maker from Nashville Tn. Bill Anderson helped to finish the song with Don.

  • 2nd try!- Anyone know the name of the lead guitar laying down those licks?

  • Program musta been runnin' outta time. He didn't get to sing

    the whole song.

    Thanks for the nostalgic post.

  • The sad part about this is regardless of your ethnicity no one seems to claim the Saginaw/Bay City area. Stevie Wonder was born in Saginaw off Washington Avenue on the Northside of the city and hardly darkens the towns door (I wouldn't either if a monument in my honor was just a road sign saying "Childhood Home of Stevie Wonder" in front of my house). Go about ten miles North to Bay City, Michigan where entertainer Madonna once lived. Hell she wouldn't even come for the key to the city!

    RSAF!

  • @mrrsaf I live in Bay CIty :)

  • great song

  • I like the song and I like his voice, but I just can't accept a dude with an Arkansas twang telling me he's from Michigan. Sorry. lmao.

  • @rb62470 don't take it literally.; Artist sing of stories of others. that's what they do.

  • @cliffcox66 While a lot of songs entail pretending to be someone else, they usually don't come with a glaring inconsistency like this one. I can listen to Sinatra singing "Old Man River", without thinking "hey, he's not black". But to listen a good old country boy telling me he was born up in northern Michigan? Uh-uh. To me, this is a great recording albeit with an asterisk next to it.

  • @rb62470 Right, as I said, he's singing NOT of himself, but a Saginaw resident. Moving on. ...

  • @cliffcox66 His twang is a big reason why his voice is so endearing. It SCREAMS "I'm a southerner!". To portray himself as a northerner is to deny what his voice is telling us. AND as far as your pompousness: Stick your nose in and then decide "moving on"? LMAO. Go ahead and move your sorry ass on. But I know people like you. Something tells me you won't be "moving on". You'll find it necessary to try to get the last word, while all along trying to act like YOU'RE the mature one. SO SAD :(

  • @rb62470 Wow! Calm, take your medication. Its' a good old song as many others. Which of the DSM IV diagnosis do you have? What's your axis I, II, III, IV diagnosis as well? Just curious. I can tell by your responses that little things really get to you. Again just conversing and stating what you have stated, he's southern and singing a song, like telling a story, about a another person. Please, i enjoy hearing from you. Fascinating.

  • @cliffcox66 Yawn. Just a variation of the reply I was expecting. How did I know that pompous-ass wasn't "moving on", as he so eloquently put it? Because angry-boys like he never move on. They are notorious "last-worders". He comes back with "it doesn't bother me and I'm taking the highroad, but I'm going to respond anyway and try to spin it to save face". 3 times yawn. Go ahead have the last word after this. Now I'M moving on, and, unlike you, I mean it. You're pathetic. smh repeatedly.

  • @rb62470 haha, thank you for the profane response. Each one has a lot of angst in it. Keem;em coming. It provided much entertainment at work. I cannot stop responding now. PLEASE, please please do not "move on". We need you!!

  • @rb62470 You know he didn't write this song, right?

  • @rb62470 It s a SONG not his autobiography

  • March 31, 1928: birth of Lefty Frizzell, American singer and songwriter (d. 1975).

  • Hank rip off. I guess originality didnt matter then

  • @MrJmocz it's Lefty's song.

  • @MrJmocz He was definitely a man of immense talent...he was NO ONE's rip off...he was an amazing songwriter and singer.

  • @MrJmocz Actualy Lefty was his own person, singer and songwritter. He didnt rip off no one because he had his own talent. IF anyone one riped offed it was Lefty s brother David who TRIED to sing like his brother and Merle Haggard had that Lefty sound in some of his songs but I love both David and Merle, just saying IF you are going to point know who to point at. Lefty had a Ark and Tex twing to his voice.

  • Notice Lefty played guitar right handed. Oh well, thanks for the

    mem'ries and the post.

  • Who's that lead guitar player laying down those wonderful licks?

  • My fav. country song of all times. Unfortunately I can´t play the original studio version in my country. I have the link here but it is blocked, copyright infringement......sad :(

  • I really like this song. And the video of Lefty performing live is terrific. Thanks for posting.

  • Straight from the heart

  • Typically, this was a huge hit in Michigan and the audience there got all full of themselves just because their state was mentioned in it. Of course, as was the case with Bobby Bare's Detroit City, it wasn't exactly something that necessarily spoke in favor of the area (and in Bare's case, quite the opposite, actually). But the blind jingoism of Michigan prevailed. Great song, nonetheless. Bill Anderson knows his onions. So did Lefty Frizzell. Love it!

  • @MikeBlitzMag

yeah, the raw buying power of Saginaw, Michigan was strong enough to power a single into the Top Ten all by itself.

  • the studio version was /is good too Thanks for posting

  • Classic Lefty tune written by Bill Anderson . Great singer , awesome songwriter . 1964 number one record.

  • Wow another old favorite
