I got The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy in large print for Christmas when I was 8 years old. I sqealed, hugged my grandparents, then sat in a chair and started that first immortal line, "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." It's been a good eight years since then.
I'm a big fan of Lord of the Rings, it is not difficult to understand the true meaning of words of this song. This song always make me cry, no matter how many times again I listened, but afterwards I feel great, I love this song very much.
Thank you Annie and thank you Thank you The Lord Of The Rings!
I was just thinking about my funeral after I commit suicide within 3 years or so and all of a sudden this image of my father, standing at the thingy where people say their last words, came up in my head and he was crying and telling me his last words. I don't know why specifically my father came to mind though. I burst out in tears instantly with that image in mind. I'll definitely have this amazing masterpiece played at my funeral as well.
@DivineDragon74 What are talking about Peter Jackson is working on the 'The Hobbit right now.And some of the cast from the first three movies are suppose to be in this one.
@DivineDragon74 it's the best TRILOGY ever! but harry potter is the best SERIES ever. But i can't really compare. In my opinion, lord of the rings and harry potter are the best fantasies ever!
trilogy and this song are pure magic..upon something what human can create. Every time Lord of The Ring ends and this song starts I cry. I don't want to cry but I can't control my tears..they just run down my cheeks
I cried to this song thinking about my grandpa who died of thyroid cancer (it'll be a year in november since his death) and I just found out I have to sing it in chorus. I hope I don't cry durring practice cause that would be terrible :')
My Grandmother died on Friday evening. I've chosen this to be played, as me andmy cousins; Jake, Wilem, and Mikey carry her Coffin down the Isle. RIP Granny. Never forgotten <3
My son was born on the same day Tolkien was. Jan 3. 2001. Just in time for the beginning of Lotr....he loved Gollum and those he called the servants of the Big Eye...:)
i love to sing songs that i can really sing directly to someone, and this one i will always think of for the two people i loved probably the most, and who i may only see once or twice more ever. if i'm even that lucky. i miss you, carlyn and lucy :( so this will be the next song that drives my family insane.
@zoegreenleaf I've always supposed that it's Galadriel singing, on the White Ship during the last journey to Valinor: "You and I will meet again, ad you'll be here in my arms, just sleeping"...
R.I.P to my twin Brother Mikey.. Not a day goes by I dont think of you Kiddo, and dad too.....He gave up when u left us Mikey...U both have gone into the west... R.I.P Mikey 8-16-81 to 5-15-11 and Pop 3-14-48 to 7-2-11...... My heart is forever broken
I know it' s from Lord of The Rings. But in Celtic Myth, Tir Nan Og is westward. It' s the otherworld. Just wondering if oul Annie was gettin into her Scottish roots here.
This truly is an uplifting song. I haven't seen Return of the King yet but have seen the first two because I am currently reading Return of the King and plan to rent it.
This is my lullaby.. My ' daddy' ( one of myfreinds, who i love dearly) Calls me and sings this to me just because or if he needs me to sleep... ELi Cornell, thank you for changing my life... " Across the sea, a pale moon rises, the ships have come to carry you home."
The theme of elves going into the west in Tolkien has to do with old stories about the Aos Si(commonly mis-named Sidhe; the name of their mound-dwellings) living across the western sea from Ireland. Although strictly speaking of the modern interpretation, aside from the clear in-story meaning, about elves returning homeward (which is referred to as a separation sort of like death and each elf is called to it at a certain time) it does have many nuances about death and possibly meeting again.
@Darkwing3640 he did a crap load more than that! he created an entire mythology and several languages, Tolkien was one of the best writers of all time.
@Darkwing3640 although this was about an aspiring actor i agree i hope he'''s the with his 'Luthien' and happy as can be watching from the West as his legacy remains ongoing R.I.P John Ronald Rowling Tolkien u will be missed and thx for inspiring one of my favorite books and movies and game of all time
This song was played at my brother's funeral today... I loved him so much and he was killed because of alcohol. the cops shot him in the chest after missing with their tasers... R.I.P.: J. P. Salveson
@wtrbender123 Thats a wonderfull thing you said here. You know, I think I will ask my children to play this song when it is time for me to go. Thank you.
2003 was a sad year for me. I lost my grandmother to lung cancer. Then two weeks later I lost two elderly friends as well. When "The Return of the King" came out later in the year and I witness the ending and heard this song...it reminded me of those who I loved and losted earlier in the year. This is why I love this song,
Listening to this song, alone and remembering those I've lost in my life, this song certainly plucks a very emotional string in my heart, each time I experience the hopeful and soothing melody accompanied by suiting and wonderful lyrics vocalized by an amazing singer, tears well in my eyes, and without fail, as soon as the line "Hope fades...into the world of night" is sung, they pour freely down my cheeks. A truly remarkable song that will forever be held in my heart.
@happyangel4eva i sang it with my choir's group at our dean's wife's funeral. it was the saddest thing i think i've ever been a part of. she was a wonderful woman and she deserved a beautiful song like this to send her off. RIP :(
@awesomeshieldmaiden It is. It's said on a place apart at the end of 'Return of the King' in modern book form.
I have absolutely no idea what I would be like if Tolkien hadn't lived. The first time I watched those movies and read his books, I was 10 years old or something. I never stopped loving them. And it changed me. It's hard to explain. But one thing I am sure of: I can't be the only one. And if a lot of people start thinking another way thanks to him, he made a difference to this world.
@JustFlemishMe although this song was about another i agree may he be at peace knowing his books are still a legend and have been beautifully made into a movie even tho he thought it couldn't
@knightace2002 Thanks. But an artist isn't really dead before no one knows him anymore. As long as a single copy of 'Lord of the Rings', 'The Hobbit' or 'The Silmarillion still exists, he'll live on.
@JustFlemishMe lol it was about a young director who died during the filming of the movie and he was a good one too just as good as Peter Jackson at his age. and i said "legendary" bc ppl know about them now but are either rarely read or hardly sold anymore except for a few books still left
@yellowcalx wrong. the Peter's original church started on the Day of Pentecost so it is anybody who agrees with that theology is the real church. not a mockery like the Catholic Church who says a man can absolve your sins. read the Bible slave.
All of you people are arguing about what "into the west" means and its possible religious meanings when that's not even what the song is entirely about. Its not just about dieing or "going into the west." It's saying, "you're dying and going to see those who have died before you. But don't be sad or afraid because when I die too, we'll see each other again."
@neklushp Very true, but in "Lord of the Rings" the Elves, along with Frodo, do not die at the end but they pass "into the west." We see the same theme in the fabulous novel "Strands of Starlight" by Gael Baudino. Heaven is not seen the same by every spiritual pathway, and for those who believe that life continues after death (in whatever form) "into the west" is a beautiful concept. I also want this song played when I pass into the west. Blessed be.
If people would actually read the books...and the history of middle earth books...they'd know more what this is about. It's a mythical place from Tolkien's books. Just because Hell is a mythical place doesn't mean they're the same....... Tolkien wasn't Christian anyways, he was a devout Roman Catholic....
@LadyCeraline You do no Roman Catholics were the first Christan's right? All the other off shoots of Christianity came about because they didn't agree with the rules of the catholic religion.
@LadyLoll1pop As much as I dislike religious debates, thats not true. Its uncertain about animals, although I believe they do. But nobody ever DESERVES to go to heaven, but some do anyways. Why? Because of Jesus. I realize not everyone believe's in him, and I respect that, but they should. He died on the cross so that those who believe on him, confess their sins, and accept him as their savior will go to heaven. Those too young to understand, like babies/toddlers/infants go to heaven too.

But don't be sad or afraid because when I die too, we'll see each other again."
neklushp 10 months ago 64
@neklushp Very true, but in "Lord of the Rings" the Elves, along with Frodo, do not die at the end but they pass "into the west." We see the same theme in the fabulous novel "Strands of Starlight" by Gael Baudino. Heaven is not seen the same by every spiritual pathway, and for those who believe that life continues after death (in whatever form) "into the west" is a beautiful concept. I also want this song played when I pass into the west. Blessed be.

@awesomeshieldmaiden I was saying I'm the eye of Sauron and that I don't like this song. I like the video though.
pkemonfan101 9 months ago
@pkemonfan101 Um, why don't you like the song? It's so pretty and symbolic and well LOTRish.

If people would actually read the books...and the history of middle earth books...they'd know more what this is about. It's a mythical place from Tolkien's books. Just because Hell is a mythical place doesn't mean they're the same....... Tolkien wasn't Christian anyways, he was a devout Roman Catholic....
LadyCeraline 11 months ago
