@crack1q2 I watched your video and OMG, what the hell are you thinking? I have some racks in my garage that I will give you free. I just picked up a Homonic 7' aluminum rack that you can have and again free. I live in Van Nuys, CA. Email me at threecablers@aol.com
@jayqueezy If you are talking about charging for play, I would get sued for that but if you are talking about making/selling the arcade...Yeah I could and it would be fun. I loved making it. Lots of hard work though.
@atxguitarist I'm not sure. Is that how its figured. I suppose if it is distributed over 4 casters it might be. I don't even remember what the rating was on the casters. I do have to say that I wished I would have gotten larger wheels because it is a pain to move it when there is a little bit of sand or dirt on the ground. The casters get stuck. lol
@OBSysteme - Right now it is hosting a calendar that syncs with iCal on my Mac. The server is used more for learning about and playing with software. I suppose I could just use a small desktop computer but theres no fun in that. I also have used it in the past for a render slave/master for Blender 3D. Fun stuff.
@youngrelleus19 - No. I don't steal. Some companies are willing to give away their old hardware because it costs nothing compared to having it recycled. They actually have more stuff ready to be recycled right now but I have no interest in it because the hard drives have been removed.
@youngrelleus19 What he said. I got my hands on a pretty good SGI Octane 2 once. It was €40, including the screen. That thing has a supercomputer arhcitecture and that hunk of iron feels like one too.
@PoweredbyCiscoIBM Actually they stay cool all summer. Surprisingly. The garage is insulated and usually stays pretty cool. No problems in the winter either.
@BR177 It does the job. I wouldn't recommend swinging on it or using it as a jungle gym but it does hold a lot of weight. For testing I stood on the sides and bounced a bit with no problems.
Hrm, you have given me some good ideas.. thank you.. I think a coat of paint would make that thing even better, but if you are going for functionality over aesthetics then you nailed it.....(get it) Looks sturdy which is the main thing.
@SeikoPsycho In my case, I don't actually need all the computers. It is more of a want. I use them for learning about servers and for experimenting with software.
Well thank you. It was pretty simple to build. Just a bunch of 2x4s and some screws, Google Sketchup and a few hours. I could have made it better but I was excited and kind of in a hurry. Some of the measurements are off by a bit. lol. I would love to see some pictures or even a video response of your server rack if possible.
Nice video. You should try to find a used APC Smart UPS 3000 model for your equipment. I had gotten rid almost all of my old equipment. One server running VMware ESXi replaced all the old ones.
Yeah I do need to get some sort of UPS running. Right now its not quite needed yet because it is just running and not being used. I still need to come up with a plan for this server rack and system.

Classy. It wouldn't kill ya to throw a coat of paint on it so it doesn't look so ramshackle...
darktek20 1 year ago
@darktek20 Yeah I was going for cheap on this one. Wasn't too worried about it being painted. It just needed to be strong.

If the casters are rated for 150lbs, wouldn't the max weight be 600lbs? since 4 casters are distributing the weight.

That's pretty cool, I'll have to show you pictures of my server rack. Yours is much higher quality than mine is(seriously). It serves me well.
Mine couldn't hold the amount of weight you have on that rack. but mine only cost 18 dollars to build(cheap).

Yep cornboy3 is correct. I used the desktop version. It is Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope). I have a lot of fun experimenting with my servers.
