His generally hits a lot more like a typical MMA overhand--with the side of the first knuckle rather than the back of the hand, but that's because the punch doesn't rotate all the way through before he lands it. If you look at the clips in the video above, the second punch they show Fedor throwing is clearly a casting punch. It's not boxing, dude, it's combat sambo. Not the same. Boxers don't throw hammer fists or back fists either.

Oh trust me, he sometimes punches like that. I used to do Spetsnaz and we have some punches that looks like that one but not as a hook. It's really effective trust me. You think Fedor is not punching like that because it looks retarded when you do it slow but if you pay attention you can see that it's pretty similar.
This is a really cool, unorthodox strike. I like it. Fedor said that when he punches, he swings like his fist is a metal ball and his arm is the chain. Of course you can get power out of this punch--it's like a lazy hook, with all the force of your shoulder rotation whipping it into your opponent. It might not work well in straight-up boxing, but I'm sure it'd be useful in MMA, as Fedor has shown.

Fedor's punch is a regular Sambo punch: his wrist's tend to be bend slightly instead of straight as you would be taught in say boxing or muay thai. this adds power but increases likelihood of hand breakage. This video is right of the shoulder leading the punch. But the landing position of the fist is wrong. His fist still lands on the two big knuckles and not on the back of it. You still whip the hand forward using the shoulder, but keep the fist turned regularly.

Hang on I missed a part... When your arms and fists are "locked" as you twist, pretend your shoulder is not, you can move your shoulder attached to the "fixed" arm, your shoulder will go similar to in this, but won't go past your fist if done right...
The turn of the fist and hip rotation makes it resemble a hook, it swings into the opponents face, watch the Sylvia fight, where he starts backing up punching, THAT is what it should look like.
I've spent AGES learning to punch like Fedor, copying all his movements from tonnes of videos, seminars etc. I can do it reasonably well now. Let me tell you, this is WRONG.
I'll try to explain, basically, you do lead with your shoulder, but you DON'T do that backhand circley whip... You basically LAUNCH your hand out and let your body follow it. If you want an easy way to lead with your shoulder, keep your fist and arm in a fixed position then launch it as you twist your hips.
Make your fist and forearm parallel, hold it at your chest facing the direction your chest is, to get the motion, twist your torso only, pretend your arms and fists are fixed and won't move. Then, basically, when you twist your upper body, you LAUNCH it as it is in line with what you want to hit. You twist the body before you throw the punch and it is thrown AS you twist.
That's how to do the Sylvia fight looping strikes, turn over your fist so your thumb points down...
His second most used punch is similar to this, but your fist starts at the hips and usually he mauls with the wrong side of his hands (palm side) it's probably not a real technique, he's just mauling with whatever he can as fast as possible.
Also, he does what is known as "shifting", you move your lead foot out and forward a tiny bit before punching.
While it looks like a straight right or even a hook would have a larger transfer of momentum (from the body), the whiplike motion of the casting punch looks like it gives the fist and forearm higher peak speeds and a higher peak force (and rate of its buildup...) during the initial impact. This may ultimately generate high (and sharp) amplitude distortions of brain-matter near the brain-stem and explain its odd KO power...(?)
It also "wraps around" an opponent's guard/ is hard to block.
fedor was really just putting his hips into those punches and not rolling his shoulder like that. The technique that was being demonstrated was HORRIBLE PLEASE DONT PUNCH LIKE THAT JESUS

Take a step forward and outwards with the leading foot (optionally use your lead hand to slap away their guard), keep your right fist at the side of your chest, twist your body diagonally downwards towards the leading foot, launch the right hand AND your whole body weight into the opponents face. You're back foot will leave the ground if you put enough weight forwards.

@hiverhythm I've seen every fedor fight. He didn't jump into nogs guard as early and in the same way as he did with werdum. Werdum is also a better BJJ artist than Nog. Nog is good but never won a bjj championship. Nog in his prime was better overall in mma, however.

An MMA fighter cant stand like a boxer, due to takedowns, they have to stand wider, they cant bend at the waist like a boxer due to knees and they face many different styles of striking. As shown in the video, this punch is used in numerous ways- As a faint for an elbow and an entry for the clinch and takedowns.

Oh trust me, he sometimes punches like that. I used to do Spetsnaz and we have some punches that looks like that one but not as a hook. It's really effective trust me. This is a really cool, unorthodox strike. I like it. Fedor said that when he punches, he swings like his fist is a metal ball and his arm is the chain. Of course you can get power out of this punch--it's like a lazy hook, with all the force of your shoulder rotation whipping it into your opponent. It might not work well in straight-up boxing, but I'm sure it'd be useful in MMA, as Fedor has shown.

1. pushing off the ground (every action has an equal and opposite reaction. your legs are strong.)
2. the distribution of body weight (twisting your hips).
in these respects the punch is good as far as brute force goes...
not so much when it comes to speed and accuracy...

Fedor's punch is a regular Sambo punch: his wrist's tend to be bend slightly instead of straight as you would be taught in say boxing or muay thai. this adds power but increases likelihood of hand breakage. This video is right of the shoulder leading the punch. But the landing position of the fist is wrong. His fist still lands on the two big knuckles and not on the back of it. You still whip the hand forward using the shoulder, but keep the fist turned regularly.

I'm pretty positive Stephen Koepfer and Reilly Bodycomb, two experts in the field of Sambo know a little bit more about analyzing a Sambo fighter's technique than a bunch of ass holes that don't even train. Yes the punch in the video is a little exaggerated but when you try punching like this you feel a tremendous amount of force come through your hand. You can kind of feel the blood in your arm getting slung into your hand like a whip.

Hang on I missed a part... When your arms and fists are "locked" as you twist, pretend your shoulder is not, you can move your shoulder attached to the "fixed" arm, your shoulder will go similar to in this, but won't go past your fist if done right...
The turn of the fist and hip rotation makes it resemble a hook, it swings into the opponents face, watch the Sylvia fight, where he starts backing up punching, THAT is what it should look like.

I've spent AGES learning to punch like Fedor, copying all his movements from tonnes of videos, seminars etc. I can do it reasonably well now. Let me tell you, this is WRONG.
I'll try to explain, basically, you do lead with your shoulder, but you DON'T do that backhand circley whip... You basically LAUNCH your hand out and let your body follow it. If you want an easy way to lead with your shoulder, keep your fist and arm in a fixed position then launch it as you twist your hips.

Make your fist and forearm parallel, hold it at your chest facing the direction your chest is, to get the motion, twist your torso only, pretend your arms and fists are fixed and won't move. Then, basically, when you twist your upper body, you LAUNCH it as it is in line with what you want to hit. You twist the body before you throw the punch and it is thrown AS you twist.
That's how to do the Sylvia fight looping strikes, turn over your fist so your thumb points down...

His second most used punch is similar to this, but your fist starts at the hips and usually he mauls with the wrong side of his hands (palm side) it's probably not a real technique, he's just mauling with whatever he can as fast as possible.
Also, he does what is known as "shifting", you move your lead foot out and forward a tiny bit before punching.

While it looks like a straight right or even a hook would have a larger transfer of momentum (from the body), the whiplike motion of the casting punch looks like it gives the fist and forearm higher peak speeds and a higher peak force (and rate of its buildup...) during the initial impact. This may ultimately generate high (and sharp) amplitude distortions of brain-matter near the brain-stem and explain its odd KO power...(?)
It also "wraps around" an opponent's guard/ is hard to block.

If you wanna do the Fedor overhand right, it's like this. Take a step forward and outwards with the leading foot (optionally use your lead hand to slap away their guard), keep your right fist at the side of your chest, twist your body diagonally downwards towards the leading foot, launch the right hand AND your whole body weight into the opponents face. You're back foot will leave the ground if you put enough weight forwards.

@hiverhythm I've seen every fedor fight. He didn't jump into nogs guard as early and in the same way as he did with werdum. Werdum is also a better BJJ artist than Nog. Nog is good but never won a bjj championship. Nog in his prime was better overall in mma, however.
