  • Oops hit send too early. After a while, I learned to come in with an open mind and give the album a good solid dozen listens or so before analyzing it. I found that I ended up enjoying each album in a different way and it's really sweetened the whole experience. So, I ask you to revisit this album. Give it another couple of listens. Give us an update. And remember, you must go experience them LIVE. Cheers.

  • I personally like the darker side of III. Go see them live, they'll melt your face clean off. Also, how many times did you listen to the album before doing the review? It sounded like you came in with a preconceived notion of how it should sound and was immediately disappointed when it didn't meet your expectations. This has happened to me with many a Charlie Hunter album. After a whi

  • organ with an effect? it's called a farfisa

  • Great review dude, together with Hidden Hand I like the I & III best.

    Subbed :)

  • This guy is an awful reviewer

  • Most definitely up there with their first two albums

  • What a twat

  • Out of all the music that i hear while delivering pizza's ,this band never has me changing the track on my cd player. This also apply's to BUDOS BAND 3,just can't get enough of this awesome sound, especially while cruisin the Peugeot 103. BUY THIS ALBUM!!

This band is creating some of the most legendary sounds in funk. I enjoyed all of they;re work on this album. Thanks,

  • I want the Moonjam back damnit!

  • I know they're repeating themselves, but no other band that does the same sound that good. I'm enjoying it a lot.

  • Good album. Not as good at their previous albums, especially their debut album.

  • I haven't listened to the album yet (just got it Saturday) at the record release show. But I definitely am agreeing about the repetition/recycling issue on my third time seeing them live. Yeah, they're great but need to move into new territory.

  • this cat's ridiculous

  • Black Venom

  • My uncle got the LP of this. He has listened to the first 2 so fair and he says they are good.

  • I've listened to this album a bunch of times and I'm enjoying it. I do agree that it does sound repetitive however I enjoy the exciting nature of the music :D

Its sounds a lot like the Soul Jazz Orchestra as well as the Superbad Soundtrack.

  • Unbroken, Unshaven, my most favourite track, yet most disappointing.

If you listen to the rising crescendo in the end, you think it's gonna maintain that rhythm, yet it just dies off... :(

  • i've only listened to unbroken, unshaven it reminds of the les baxter hells bells soundtrack which is a good thing!xx

  • 0:33 - 0:38 I loled a lot xD

  • Dude! The album has a fuckin Cobra on it! How bad can it be?!!! I havent heard it yet but im getting it asap...

  • I laughed pretty hard when you announced the name is the budos band III

  • I kinda felt the same way. it feels like theyre verging more towards the doom rock sound.still really damn good, but meh. good review, Budos II still no.1 to me.

  • HOLY SHAZBOT!!!! THis is the coolest thing I've heard, along with Dumbo Get's Mad.

  • hahahah

Unbroken, Unshaven = belongs in a Quentin Tarantino film.

just sounds like something he'd use

  • Good stuff anthony

  • Just got all three albums of them on vinyl in the mail today :D

  • i gotta say their stuff reminds me of music tarantino would use. saying what i said before about this being background music.. i think ill put the discography on random+repeat before i go to sleep tonight.

  • so i gave a listen to crimson skies and was somewhat on the fence on how i thought about the genre. decided to go ahead and check out the whole discography. i managed to listen to all 3 albums and i gotta say im digging all of it. its certainly not familiar music to me... its good background music on my large sound system while im busy with somthing. i gotta say i enjoyed all 3 albums. probably 1 the most, but i didnt think 3 was all that bad at all.

  • Don't mind me, just bopping like a bitch to Crimson Skies

  • 2 things

    -1-

I can tell where you're coming from with some on most of the stuff. I never heard their stuff before until now and they sounded good until... I was hearing empty spaces in some of the songs. The organ, well it either isnt enough or is just pointless in some spaces. As far as recycled stuff, it does sound a little repetitive.

    -2-

Jaws has 4 movies out, not 3. But dont watch the 4th... It sucks. The first one was the best. The series just got progressively worse.

    Thanks :)

  • Certainly do agree that if your not into The Budos Band you "Fail at life"...I do feel the same way as you. I felt with this album it would be their chance to take the way they approach music to new heights...experiment if you will. But with repeated spins...I am starting to like it a bit more (I've had the album since last week). And as far as the titles for the albums go. Led Zeppelin did the same thing, and people ate it up.

  • they pulled a ratatat

  • So, no kudos to The Budos (Band) this time around?

  • I remembered when you reviewed their EP a while ago. I loved it. Better than both their albums. I didn't expect this at all and I've got to check it out.

  • Good review. I like the subliminal "SUPPORT TND!" AT 2:59-3:01

  • Personally I like it. As someone said, 'it almost scares you onto the dance floor'.

Can't imagine what dance floor would be playing afro-funk but hey!

i have only listened to it twice so I think there's definitely a possibility of it going stale. It's really well produced but there isn't much colour so I find I can't really listen to it much before getting tired. The EP was great because it would end before that happened.

  • Man you hit the tail on the head, I would have described it the exact same way. exact.

It is very recycled, by my preference differs from you. Origins of man is my favorite song on the second album because it is dark. I Love dark moody music, and the fact that they did it a lot is a big plus for me. I think on all of their albums the horns are too over powering, but the underline groves are so intelligent I could care less. Best Afro beat band out there (In my opinion)

  • the end!! Stop scaring us like that LOL

  • have u ever gave an album 10/10

  • I wasnt expecting the end..

    ..kinda shat bricks

  • I listened to a couple of songs, pretty good, and I see where you're coming from. But I think it still has that same "flow" if you will.

You described them your first review, to a 70's gangster movie, and that's the image thats stuck in my mind since then.

I love that you turned me onto this band, they are incredible.

    <3 TND

  • Anthony I like you responses to your needle drops. It makes us feel good, thanks.

  • I was kinda browsing my other tabs while listening to this video, and all of a sudden this evil voice of inescapable doom blares into my headphones - "YOU FAIL AT LIFE - and ruined my tumblr experience. Thanks.

    :)

  • you impress me yet again anthony fantano! where do you get your vinyls!?!

  • Purple squirrels eating fucking lemons!!!! AHHHH

  • TH[th(three)ree]ree

  • Jaws is a quadrilogy :x

  • Just curious, what are your favourite 2010 releases so far?

  • @handsomerob48 he did a video about this a few weeks ago.

i doubt much has changed in those weeks.

  • @handsomerob48

    youtube.com/watch?v=J1PruMkQPDw

  • @handsomerob48 he already did a vid on that

  • @handsomerob48 I made a video about it. Search it in my uploads. :-)

  • lol i like the way u stand at 0:04

  • Thanks for saying what you feel Anthony, never sell out! Hmm, I wonder what Cal Chuchesta thinks of The Budos Band...guess we'll never know!

  • @bluelebowski I dunno, bit it would probably involve explaining what a Budo is...

  • I like your shirt.

  • @45nothings Thanks! :-D

  • Ahh I love the Budos Band. They play in a club right next to my house almost every weekend. No joke.

  • @Alex703rockstar Srsly? You should invite me sometime!

  • @theneedledrop Haha yes and then I wouldn't have to sneak in cause it's only 18+

  • I didnt even know about these guys, but i love their sound. I will have to go check out their earlier stuff.

  • I don't know the band but I listened to Crimson Skies and Unbroken, Unshaven and it sounds amazing. It reminds me of the Wu Tang Clan, I really enjoy that dark sound. I have to listen to the whole album I guess.

  • @GeistWerk Yeah, those are two of my favorite tracks from the LP. It's great in small doses on some tracks, but some songs really pale in comparison to others. They just don't vary like they do on past albums, and it's kinda lead to something that bored me. Not disgusted by the album at all, but just feeling really "meh." It didn't excite me like their previous efforts have.

  • @GeistWerk Check out "El Michels Affair, Enter The 37th Chamber". Its a funky remake of a Wu Tang album
