Khankonchak. I have gotten goosebumps from listening to this man. Thank you so much for sharing Shtokolov's artistry with all of us lucky YouTube listeners.
An incredibly beautiful mastery of singing, what a thrill to listen to such breathtaking performance.Thankyou for the posting of this jewell of singing.
Wonderful. I had thought that Chaliapin virtually owned this piece, but Shtokolov's voice is more beautiful and his rendition is powerful. I wish someone would do a study about Russian voice training back in the day. It seems as though their basses and baritones in particular could routinely produce lovely diminuendos and floated ppps:) --
If we check closer at the cv´s of many Slav baritones and basses we shall observed that most of them participated in church choirs were dimuendi and ppp´s are essential.
I agree with all the praises written for Shtokolov and his interiorised singing.
Thank you for your kind words, calzio71; I feel the same way. Unfortunately, Shtokolov remains little-known outside of the former USSR, although Youtube has brought his incredible voice to many listeners who had never previously heard of him. I'm very glad that you too have derived such enjoyment from his recordings.
The more I hear Shtokolov, the more astounded I am by his talent and artistry. You are again correct khankonchak when you say this is artistry that defies criticism. That wonderful crescendo that begins at about 5:10 and is held for at least 15 seconds is just beyond description! For my tastes,I have NEVER heard a basso profondo who is Shtokolov's equal!Mille grazie khankonchak for sharing these wonderful pieces with us.Bravissimo Shtokolov!
Amazing! Thank you for posting.

A surprisingly dark tone of voice, strong but never harsh, very smooth and beautiful. A true pleasure to listen to. Thanks for this
