That's why he refueled at Tenerife... At that time, it was the most logic thing to do, he couldn't have known then that this decision would have such disastrous consequences.
It's not like he purposely took on extra fuel to cause a big crash.
why not just takeoff in the opposite direction and turn once your in the air clear of the fog? btw how can a jumbo turn at such a steep angle in fog when he can't even see the runway out of his cockpit? Epic Fail goes to Dutch mofo who violated basic procedures.
2:34- BS. The KLM passengers were allowed into the terminal, but the Pan Am passengers were not, because the terminal was too full. In fact, two children on the KLM flight got lost in the terminal and the KLM waited for them to be found before backtracking down the runway. And at 9:03- Clipper Rainbow! (The accident 747 was called Clipper Victor)
Shame these documentaries keep repeating the same mistakes instead of checking their sources. The KLM was quite low on fuel, having diverted to Tenerife. It had enough fuel to get to Los Palmas, but could have been in trouble if Los Rodeos closed again. It did not have enough fuel to get to Amsterdam, so would have had to refuel at Los Palmas anyway. It was therefore safe & sensible to refuel at Tenerife - it was not an unusual decision, just bad luck the airport opened during refuelling.
Ugh how many more times are they gonna show us that cheesy animation at 5:18 ...

At 3:19 the narrator states that Veldhuyzen van Zanten's decision was unnescessary..
This isn't entirely correct, there was enough feul to reach Las Palmas, but not for the flight back to Amsterdam.
He wanted to use the delay as efficiënt as possible by refeuling so that he could fly back immediately.
Otherwise the crew would exceed their working hours, forcing them to stay.
If the crew would exceed their working hours.. there would be serious consequences by the new rule of the FAA.

Is this voiceover guy the same guy that did the voice for Baz Luhrmann's 'Wear Sunscreen' record ?
He sounds remarkably like him.
