How do I get Fusion out of Unity Mode? I have a Windows program that is frozen and alt-ctrl-del does not work. Rebooting does not work because Fusion just "suspends." I can't actually close out of Windows until I can get out of unity mode. I need to get back to "single window." Can anyone help me?
@roncram there should be the section in the right hand corner of your mac. click the arrow pointing north west & south east lol then click view, then the option of what mode to change it to should appear..click your desired option..
@kenzeus Not really. Only 10 to 20% more compared to a matching PC. An hp elite book workstation laptop or a dell precision cost about as much as a macbook pro. The mac haves some nicer hardware features and a much better base software package. Apple just don't want to be in the low end market as they want to mantain quality.
BTW I never owned a mac and love PCs, Seriously considering a macbook pro now as I can have the slick OSX and still develop ,net software using VM ware fusion or parallels
Dell sells outdated laptops & desktops that why they cost "cheap"..
I own a Asus laptop it has a Nvidia GTX 1G vram it cost me only 800$.I can play any video games on it with high settings. If you going to buy a laptop get it from a ODM Original Design Manufacturer
All major Brands like (Dell,Hp,Toshiba,Apple,Vaoi,Gateway, etc.)None of them make their laptops they buy them from an ODM but their brand on it to increase the cost and Profit!
@kenzeus For gaming ASUS does haves nice machines! My requirements are a bit different: I need a processor with 4 cores, good L cache, lots of RAM and a fast hard drive. I use virtual machines to mimic my clients' environment so I can develop and test software. With those as requirements, only the professional PC workstations provide me enough speed so that I don't have to constantly wait on the PC. Graphics aren't a problem as I don't play much this days and I use a PS3 and PSP for that.
@The3XpL0D It does not. Seamless mode sucks compared to unity. I can drag a document(like a movie or word document) from my linux destop and drop it on a unity program like word or a media player :) and it will open it or play it. You can not do that in virtual box. Also virtual programs run inside virtual taskbar and not in the taskbar of the os that you are using
neither, if ur gamer just use boot camp. parallels doesnt support 3d grafics and vmware supposedly does but its really laggy and i tried it with a 3.06 processor and a nividia geforce 9600...
i mean, just in case such is possible of course. the idea of allowing a mac to possibly run a virus file kinda gives me the creeps - even with securities and the possibility of remaking the whole thing again... specially after screwing up a PC hard disk with a virus 1 year ago =(

... just fine. Maybe something is wrong with the deinstaller... pretty weird problem, but happily it was easy to solve. This is just a warning what VMWare can do to your machine, but in general it worked very fine for me. So have fun guys ;)
VMWare crashed my pc. After the installation I couldn't boot any longer. (Blue screen). I googled the hex error code and found out that something is wrong with the network system file. (The one who saves the network connections etc.) So I took the network system file from my XP CD and everything worked fine again. I had and I ll always have a 100% clean system, but somehow VMWare Workstation messed it up... hmm.. the error only occured at the second installation. The first installation worked...
A Mac isn't a 'Mac'. Same processor, same motherboard etc. like a "standard pc". There is no difference. Earlier there were differences like the G3 processor etc, but now....
@spy386 - Damn right, they moved to x86 (i386), architecture, which is when they went all Intel on our ass. Now they have x64, the power pc processor was kind of rubbish, apple programs are twice the size as they should be (Quicktime 60-80mb) supporting both types of cpu.
@spy386 There's still many differences, you just don't know of them. So can I say an HP isn't a "HP" because it's the same components? What about Dell, what about any brand? No, because they all have their own features. Some way better than others.
how do you add windows applications to the dock? stupid question i know, but i just started using vmware fusion and i thought it would jump out at me more.
I think it's a bargain for what it does. It runs incredibly quickly on my Mac. Then again I've been using Virtual PC for years :-) As much as I dislike Windows I have to access various specialist medical applications which are Windows only. I only use each of these programs once each day. At the touch of a button I have instant access to Windows. You can use Spaces to make things even neater, so Windows has it's own virtual workspace and I don't have to look at its ugly mug.
If you think about what you just said then it should dawn on you that as a PC user you have have less choice of applications to run than a Mac user running Fusion, Parallels or Boot Camp.
You fail to point out one thing; people who switch to Mac don't do that because they can't run the applications they want unless thjey;re nut about Final Cut pro, while on the other hand tons of Mac users find it necessary to buy Windows to run the applications they can't run.
A normal thinking person buys a computer for its applications. That you buy an overpriced Mac that also forces you to buy VMWare (and a copy of Windows if you dont have one) seems to me a rather foolish move, especially when you see how well received Windows 7 already is before its even released.
Yet you bash Windows, but at the same time you deny how well it is for...mmm...applications, the main reason we buy computers for.
Because then one certain person or a group of person will own the whole economy of operating systems. Which is huge cause everyone need's an os and it will be expensive (like microsoft is).
Look at bill gates he almost owns the economy of Operating systems, luckily that's is changeing slowly
all of a sudden when i started using vmware fusion when i restart windows xp on it it makes me shut down both my windows and mac via power button.. is there a setting i have to fix?
I need a spot of help =( when I installed it all was fine but when I tried to import my parallels VM it says its still running but when i check the program isnt on! HELP plz
Can you show me where I said Windows apps are not needed? I didn't. Macs are more flexible because you get a great machine/OS plus you can run apps from other OS'. What is really nice is I use Windows apps sandboxed and only allow the full net on the OS X side so I don't have to deal with the virus thing.
Larger render companies do use Macs.
It is cute that you assume someone who has owned/run game companies since 1993 doesn't do "real' work. ^_^
Actually since Ive known them since highschool whatever, they are the team leaders. And well, you "own your own company" 'nuff said about being "sad" ;-)
"the applications are running in a VM instanstance of windows "
1-VM=virtual machine
2-Applications are running in windows
3-Doesnt matter what host OS (windows or OSX - guest OS is windows)
4- My point - why have a mac if you are running windows. Why bother buying a MAC to run the most useful utilities if run in windows ayway.
Were are describing the same process from different ends. You state the obvious when you say it doesn't matter what the host is... but what host is used in the video? nuff said.
My point is you sound like a poser when you have to fall back on "friends' accomplishments. ^_^ And it wasn't company, it was companies - keep it straight.
And the original post AGAIN.. with money you save NOT buying a mac, you could spend on a fast SSD, and for equal the price run circles around a mac as well as run a VM instance of OSX or VM of windows.
You'd end up getting a faster machine and more utility from it.
PS- worked for means game testing ;) and the art deam usually does have mactards but the othe teams are the windoze/programming teams. Again having your own company and living with mum, doesnt count ;-)
PC World - Mac running Windows = Fastest Windows machine. Look it up. You save time and money not dealing with Windows viruses and malware. Plus I won't use a machine that threatens lock out like WGA.
Calling people names make you look grade school. Stick to facts.
Actually NO they dont and if you actually had a JOB rather then live out of mom's house you'd know that alot of the RETARDS cant do some of the work and hand it to the Windoze team to run CS4 in Windows 64 bit with alot of ram, 3ds max same or autodesk. And for large rendering jobs send it to the Linux rendering farm.
Yup, CHEAPER computers are just that, cheap. Sorry but I'm no cheapskate. I like to get value for my money. But if you are too poor to afford it then by all means, go cheap.
And while you pretend you have a better and more useful computer, I saved money have a dell latitude and a SSD drive from intel that makes your Apple, of same price, look retarded.
But then computers tend to reflect upon their owner ;-)
Maybe you should do some research and you'll find Macs hold their resale value longer then similar PCs. You'll also find that consumer satisfaction is much higher for Mac hardware then PCs. And we haven't even gotten into what a joke Windows is. ;-)
nice mactarded response as this video is running windows, the applications are running in a VM instanstance of windows and not OSX.
Why needed? because people need windows to do work. Thats why the mactads complain when they need to do real work and send the large pictures and renders over to the windows team. ;)
Oops but you dont work, only blog as if you did ;)
Minimum Requirements for VMware Fusion * Intel® Mac required. * Minimum 1GB of RAM (2GB RAM recommended). * 400 MB free disk space for VMware Fusion, and at least 5GB for each virtual machine. * Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later. * Operating system installation media (disk or disk image) for virtual machines. * Microsoft Windows (not included).
I am looking to buy VMware, but I have two mac machines ... a early 2008 Macbook pro and a 2009 macbook unibody ... can I install vmware on both the systems using the same key? Coz I dont want to shell out 160 bucks buying the same software twice
Yes, or use the Windows XP re-installation disc that came with a PC. I used my brother's Dell OEM Windows XP disc that came with his Dell laptop. It will ask you for a license key, and so I just used the one on the Windows sticker on the side of an old Dell Dimension tower (I could have use the one on the bottom of his laptop, but didn't want to bother him), and surprisingly it worked.
when im in Unity mode if i were to minimize a windows app the app would disappear. in order for me to maximize the app again i have to exit unity. is their a fix or way around this?
can I load my bootcamp part. so I can use the programs I have already installed on my windows bootcamp part.? since I don't like restart my macbook over & over..
cos that is what I want, & this looks real nice
parallels trial frooze when I tryed open my bootcamp part. so I disliking it for now :P
Yes, VMware should automatically recognize your Boot Camp partition and let you start from it. The first time you do, it'll want to install some VMware tools and then have you re-register Windows once, but after that it should be pretty seamless.
hey sorry for responding so late. well i dont kno what order it is but another one is Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) by c+c music factory. another is mas que nada by sergio mendes and brasil 66
would be grat for music production software to combine win and mac software. But I'm not so sure that it would work with midi, rewire and other music production stuff which makes it easier to compose or arrange songs via VSTi's and similar SW.
You couldnt use rewire / plugins between windows apps and apple apps, you could however use vsti's installed in the virtual pc, bounce the audio and import it into you mac daw! Still good!
Yeah,..this might be right,... but than again,..i think I'd rather invest into a mac and a PC and have two separated machines with separate HW - processor power. I than still can use them to bounce the audio and import it to any machine I need. Or even better its possible to connect two machines trough LAN and use the power of both machines. I wonder if this LAN combining software would work in this virtual version....
VMWare fusion works great! I've installed Visual Studio now and can even use the networking when I use the VPN client either in Mac or Windows. The only problem I have is that the window view (seeing all active windows and being able to select one) doesn't update the windows in Unity mode. I have to hover over to see what they are sometimes...
Is it possible to run Windows Live Messenger with iSight ENABLED ? I tried with Parallels everything was working fine but no iSight detected, even with the "driver".
Nice tutorial^^ come look inside at my blog vmare. You can comment in our blog if you want^^

No, VMware in general is not good for gaming. You never want to virtualize the OS when running games. For everything else, VMware is great.

I have a question. When I open VMWare Fusion on my mac osx, I get this message..
The VMware Tools resume script did not run successfully in this virtual machine.
If you have configured a custom resume script in this virtual machine, please inspect it for errors; otherwise, please submit a support request.
Other than that it does not let me do anything and eventually I have to shut down the software.
Thanks

Actually since Ive known them since highschool whatever, they are the team leaders. And well, you "own your own company" 'nuff said about being "sad" ;-)
"the applications are running in a VM instanstance of windows "
1-VM=virtual machine
2-Applications are running in windows
3-Doesnt matter what host OS (windows or OSX - guest OS is windows)
4- My point - why have a mac if you are running windows. Why bother buying a MAC to run the most useful utilities if run in windows ayway.
jabberwolf 2 years ago
Were are describing the same process from different ends. You state the obvious when you say it doesn't matter what the host is... but what host is used in the video? nuff said.
My point is you sound like a poser when you have to fall back on "friends' accomplishments. ^_^ And it wasn't company, it was companies - keep it straight.
dropbot 2 years ago

Stick to facts.
dropbot 2 years ago
Actually NO they dont and if you actually had a JOB rather then live out of mom's house you'd know that alot of the RETARDS cant do some of the work and hand it to the Windoze team to run CS4 in Windows 64 bit with alot of ram, 3ds max same or autodesk. And for large rendering jobs send it to the Linux rendering farm.
Oops yeah you run squat! And it shows ;)

I've worked games for the following companies, Blizzard, Mindscape, THQ. Your comments make you look stupid since you know nothing about me. ^_^
dropbot 2 years ago
oops you just ran into someone that has friends that worked on Final Fantasy... and others that make games for military contracting with USC.
ooops sucks to be a faker like you ;-)
But dream on, your fantasy world is all you got :P
jabberwolf 2 years ago
I've got to say, using the "friends" line has got to be the saddest thing you could have said. ^_^
dropbot 2 years ago
how about having a CHEAPER computer with better hardware running a vm workstation of OSX.
That way you CAN do everything like running things in SLI mode, games, 64 bit apps that wont run in 64 bit mode in OSX... etc.
And yes this has already been and is being done ;-)
jabberwolf 2 years ago
Yup, CHEAPER computers are just that, cheap. Sorry but I'm no cheapskate. I like to get value for my money. But if you are too poor to afford it then by all means, go cheap.
dropbot 2 years ago
And while you pretend you have a better and more useful computer, I saved money have a dell latitude and a SSD drive from intel that makes your Apple, of same price, look retarded.
But then computers tend to reflect upon their owner ;-)
jabberwolf 2 years ago
Maybe you should do some research and you'll find Macs hold their resale value longer then similar PCs. You'll also find that consumer satisfaction is much higher for Mac hardware then PCs. And we haven't even gotten into what a joke Windows is. ;-)
dropbot 2 years ago
nice mactarded response as this video is running windows, the applications are running in a VM instanstance of windows and not OSX.
Why needed? because people need windows to do work. Thats why the mactads complain when they need to do real work and send the large pictures and renders over to the windows team. ;)
Oops but you dont work, only blog as if you did ;)

What are your Mac's configurations? Such as GHz, RAM, HD, etc.? I just want to know because VMWare Fusion runs so smoothly on your Mac. :)
novangel 3 years ago

Thanks
khurram388 3 years ago
Seriously:
I bought both them VMWARE and PARALLELS
Listen carefuly what I have to tell you:
VMWARE IS THE BEST. Miles away from Parallels. The best tool for you "play" windows on your OSx (no heavy impact on your MAC what so ever!!!!!)
Trust me!
Thanks VMWARE Team. Really thanks.

ratada92 3 years ago
You need an other OS to use it like Windows XP : You install it with VmWare Fusion and create a virtual PC in OSX !
Good Luck :-)

now do i have to buy windows xp separately before instaling this?
studiophoenix 3 years ago
Yes, or use the Windows XP re-installation disc that came with a PC. I used my brother's Dell OEM Windows XP disc that came with his Dell laptop. It will ask you for a license key, and so I just used the one on the Windows sticker on the side of an old Dell Dimension tower (I could have use the one on the bottom of his laptop, but didn't want to bother him), and surprisingly it worked.

can I load my bootcamp part. so I can use the programs I have already installed on my windows bootcamp part.? since I don't like restart my macbook over & over..
cos that is what I want, & this looks real nice
parallels trial frooze when I tryed open my bootcamp part. so I disliking it for now :P
DKQuinsHill 3 years ago
Yes, VMware should automatically recognize your Boot Camp partition and let you start from it. The first time you do, it'll want to install some VMware tools and then have you re-register Windows once, but after that it should be pretty seamless.

would be grat for music production software to combine win and mac software. But I'm not so sure that it would work with midi, rewire and other music production stuff which makes it easier to compose or arrange songs via VSTi's and similar SW.
blueeye007 3 years ago
You couldnt use rewire / plugins between windows apps and apple apps, you could however use vsti's installed in the virtual pc, bounce the audio and import it into you mac daw! Still good!
steakmonster 3 years ago
