  • such as the missipippi river flows

  • Wow, at 3:47 - I always thought it was a humble G chord. But it is NOT.. genius!

  • First in best rock, or?

  • I just recently bought an old Roland Jazz Chorus amp from the 80's. It's all solid state but man it really gets the chorus distortion ring like classic Lifeson tone. Dig it!

  • This is ear candy for those of us that play by ear and not tabs. Interesting to hear the use of two overlaid guitar tracks, killer sustain, interesting chord voicings, great tone from lows to highs...awesome stuff.

  • Lerxst always make the most interesting chord choices.

  • huey...oh! i believe it...i had one! and it sounded more like a soft overdrive than a raspy distortion to me! i wish i still had that thing!

  • how can you not like alex's tone? it's gorgeous

  • @bassguitar079 you need to have the multitracks of the song. sorry there isn't a program to do it, unfortunately.

  • @thebigguyconnor

And how do you have access to these tracks? Arent they owned by some record company?

  • Isolated? replayed more like it. Sounds good. I need to get my gear going again.

  • sounds to me like alex played it distorted and then double tracked a clean guitar over it

  • @ak47dragunov thats what i was thinking. he does a similar thing in recording limelight

  • i love alex' guitar/amp tone here. i hate distortion, but i love a crunchy tone where you can hear every note ring! ;-)

  • @sevenismagicman He uses MXR Distortion plus, which believe it or not is overdrive

  • @sevenismagicman Yeaah! I realize that alex use a crunchy tone ...it sounds better I think

  • @sevenismagicman I actually use the crunch for basses with arpeggios or other things, and the distortion for the solos...

  • on the "what you say about his company" verse, do you hear the open string ringing with the other picked notes?

  • I have waited soooooo long for these isolated tracks to finally make it out! Yes!!!

  • can you do one of satch bogie and always with me always with you please?

  • This is interedting. It proves quite nicely how the RUSH sound is fully a collective effort -- in isolation Alex's raw energy is there for sure, BUT it doesn't stand alone -- it's only when blended with the other guys that it REALLY sings!!

  • i never liked alex`s tone but i love his playning

  • How do you isolate just the guitar?

  • @ecktoeman You can't. These isolations are only possible because the isolated tracks from the multitrack masters have been provided to Guitar Hero, it's trivial to rip those from the game discs. There's no way to extract the guitar if all you have to work with is the ordinary mixed version of the song.

  • dude how did u get that ending on the cd version it fades out and continues that one riff that ending sounded like wat they do live

  • Dude, thank you for isolating all 5 tracks of this song! I can now hear things I've never heard before, like that second note note Alex plays at 0:46.

  • @cantonian1 this was actually the Howard Roberts Fusion (also semi acoustic of course)

I believe he also used his "Hentor" customised strat quite a bit

(with the Bill Lawrence humbucker). Marshall 4041 2 x 12s and Hiwatts...

Anyway... Just brilliant! Sounds like 1 main guitar split in stereo with other supporting double/triple qualdruple/ whatever tracks- awesome.

  • I thought his guitar sound on this album (Moving Pictures) was his best sound. Nothing compares to the old ES335 through the chorus/distortion. Just excellent.

  • Alex Lifeson explains how they got the sound about 3 mins in to this:

    youtube.com/watch?v=N665eUvNkDc&feature=related

  • @rhessex Indeed, thx!

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • do jacobs ladder!!!!

  • This song DEFINES power chords.

  • i cant get his sound at all! i can play the song but i have no idea how to get that tone

  • @FenderUsa I got a tone that was pretty close. Use your treble pickup with a little overdrive and tons of chorus. If you have a hollow-body, that's even better.

  • @FenderUsa well i can hear theres some chorus in there some reverb and a touch of delay :)

  • @FenderUsa It's called four guitar tracks!

  • @SciMasterGeneral but even live it sounds close to this

  • @FenderUsa The only live version that sounds anywhere near as fat as this is the Exit Stage Left version. On that he is playing a Howard Robert's Fusion Guitar. The fattest sounding guitar of all time.

  • @SciMasterGeneral Personal experience here, take a Fender Strat (not a cheap ass one either, a really, really high quality one) and put on some Lace Sensor pick-ups....What you hear next will blow your mind for the rest of your life if you plug it into a high quality amplifier. And all I know is that the pick-ups were Lace Sensor Gold and the Strat I don't know the exact model, the amp, don't even ask. But thats all I know, it is it sounds excellent.

  • perfect

  • That's great! How can you do that?????

  • Hi, how are you? Could you tell me the program you used to isolate the track? I'll thank you so much. And I have a Mac... Do you know if exist any program to isolate tracks for Mac?

    PD: Sorry for my english.

  • You probably get many requests, but might I suggest YYZ (album version) first and then Spirit of Radio? Then isolated bass versions so I have something to play to. Listening to this, I find tons of little touches I'm missing in the rhythm parts and it provides tremendous incite into what is going on with the music.

Can someone please, please isolate Steve Howe's of YES's guitar in the first third of Close to the Edge?

    YES Summer 2010 US Tour

  • @pschroeter1 I can definitely get YYZ... Spirit of Radio might be harder - but I think ill be able to get that too.

I love yes - but I dont have any yes isolations.

  • @thebigguyconnor You screwed up and put isolated bass track in the description.

  • @LightningCat315 thanks for letting me know! I'll change it now.

  • @pschroeter1 there's already one for yyz on someone else's channel.

  • @IbanezNick75

I already found it, but I still thank you for trying to help. When I first started seeing these, it took me a while to realize that whether they could possibly exist, depends on whether the song was used in the computer game Rock Band. I guess I have to hope YES finds its way into the game too.

  • @pschroeter1 sometimes these are taken from other sources, like how some of the beatles multitracks got stolen and leaked at one point, and also I get some of my isolations off 5.1 surround sound mixes of songs

  • @pschroeter1 Yeah lol I wish ! Nobody touches Steve Howes stuff,,almost no one.
