  • it´s a stupid video

  • hi is it noisy?

  • Just a couple of questions about this drive:

    1) When the PC is powered off (but still plugged in) does the blue LED still show?

    2) Does the drive spin-down?

    3) Can the blue light be turned off?

    thanks

  • The only thing I can see that would warrant blame to Neil Poulton, is shoddy design! "Hey everyone, look! It's a black box!! OH MY GOD! A BLACK BOX! HE'S A GENIUS! OH WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM NEIL!?

  • I've been wanting to buy this... but i still have my doubts, im hoping you can help me out on telling me how its been since you bought it, is it good not so good?

    thanks.

  • Please keep to expletives away Renewer ! - I had the same problem as many of you. You can open them though, You need three butter knives - flip over the drive, slot one into each end and one on the side (this is the space between the plastic case and the metal part underneath). Ease the plastic away from the metal gently - this will release a notch and the metal part can come out with the disk. The disk is okay. Probably the USB interface is the problem! So maybe you can't reuse the case

  • Sorry, sorry. Loosing all my data to this faulty drive is just so frustrating. The USB drive is fine. I found out that it is actually SEAGATE that makes the drive. Lacie uses the SEAGATE BARRACUDA hardware and covers it with their own case. I've read that SEAGATE has had many problems with their BARRACUDA units.

  • Well. To My Best Understanding "Barracuda" Is The Newest Line Of HDDs By Seagate.

And I Also Know That According To "Seagate"

They're Working On A New Firmware To Resolve The Issue.

  • so, do you reckon it's possible to replace the hard drive by any other in the end? been thinking about buying one of those, but only if i can replace the hard drive by something i like better :)

  • If you want to buy an external hard drive from a brand other than LaCie or Seagate that's up to you. I think Western Digital has good product. But PLEASE do your research before you buy. Check the internet to see if there is anything wrong with a product you plan to buy.

  • Just a point - I found mine very hot and very noisy; the case scratched really easily and the USB port became wobbly after a year of just sitting on my desk. I'm not impressed - who is this Neil bloke anyway?

  • @ cogoo

I Only Know Of Neil Poulton. [Product Designer.]

  • i got the same one but 1TB for 150 dolars

  • I just ordered the 500 GB version of this drive today. I am hoping to have a pleasant experience with it.

  • I bought this unit 1/2 a year ago. I hate it because there was no way to open it up and see if anything was loose when it wasn't working which was today. It worked fine yesterday. I don't know what the problem is. Apparently Lacie 1 tb ext. hard drives are prone to overheating. I can't access my files, and there was some pretty important stuff on it. I needed to get the serial # in order to get tech support, and it's not even on the crappy designed hard drive. FUCK NEIL POULTON!

  • Exact same problem. 1 TB of data is a lot to loose.

  • I Understand Your Anger. But. I'd Like To Point Out That : "U're Blaming The Wrong Person"

See. Neil Is The Product Designer "Only."

In Other Words...He Was Hired By LaCie To Make A Box [Case/Chassis] For The HDD Product Made By Seagate.

And Is Seagate That Is Having Problems With It's HDDs. Not LaCie. If You Check Seagates Website Or Wiki That Model You Will See That The Locking Is Being Caused By Seagates' Product.

If Anything Else Is Loose/Broken Then Yes, Blame LaCie. Not Neil.

  • Yeah u're right, I as angry that my new 1 tb hard drive stopped working. I was frustrated with the design because it was hard to open; I wanted to see if there was something wrong inside. I don't know if I should send a complaint to Seagate or not, can they help me? As of now I will never buy another LaCie or Seagate product again. Apparently, Seagate is aware of this problem with their HDDs.

  • @ renewer

Well. Complains Will Not Really Do Much...The Most You Will Get From A Complain Is To Take Your Anger Out.

What You Can Do Is To File A Class Action "Complain". Or Call The US Consumer Affairs Department If You Are In The US...They Can Assist You Further.

If You File For A Class Action And There Is Enough People Who Did The Same...

[Usually Is More Than 40.000 (To My Best Understanding)] Then You Will Get Some Attention In Court.

  • You Can Visit Wikipedia For More Info : Keyword : Class action

They Other Option You Have Is To Call Seagate And Ask For An Exchange/Repair.

If Your Drive Is Still Under Warranty.

Otherwise They Will Not Really Be Of Any Help.

    [Unless You Extend Your Warranty.]

Keep In Mind That : "This Is Not LaCies' Fault.

    But I Understand Your Frustration.

  • @WiiIPTV Completely OT but I have to.. Why would you make reading a simple comment that much of a pain for others?

itS aS iF i woulD starT tO typE likE thiS - Which greatly slows down reading speed and becomes a bother.

  • See the video respose about the quirky noisy fan on my LaCie 1TB Neil Poulton hard disk (model 301315U with FW 400 & eSATA connectors).

  • hi i got this drive today, i'm using it with my macbook got a question does your hard-drive make alot of noise when its connected but not in use?

  • Not really, only when it's doing a backup...

  • how much was it?...u think it would work gud with a macbook..using time machine?

  • I use it for TM with an iMac..it works fine so far...

Should be the same with a MB, though I have another extra external HDD for my MB (which is loud and ugly btw...)

  • I forgot: it was about 100€, but it should be the same in $

  • I have a Lacie ITB Neil Poulton Design. Although very fast in copying/pasting, I have read reviews online about it being not too reliable.

It is relatively quiet but I also have a Trekstor 500GB drive and it is MUCH MORE quiet than Lacie. I do not care so much about speed but noise is an issue for me. I will return it back to Futureshop before the 30 day window closes.

  • Do you have the usb only version? I hear the multi port one can rev up a little load. I can't imagine it being so noisy that you are going to return it. That start up noise can get annoying but it's definitely not a deal breaker for me. Mine is on all the time.

  • nice unboxing julia and i like the music

  • Well, I just bought one for $119 with free shipping from amazon. I have been waiting on a price drop for a while. Looking forward to it. I plan to use time machine and store media files which I will convert for my PS3.

  • dude, tell me about your lacie HD when you get it, im thinking of getting the same at amazon, saw it on sale too.lol

  • Well I got it and not sure what else to same but it looks awesome. Smaller than what it appears on websites and super quiet. It does make a funny start up/wakeup noise. I think I'll pick another one up for redundancy.

  • do not buy one of these pieces of shit.

it WILL die anywhere between two weeks to one year of purchase.

  • Lacie makes good hard drives. I would put my faith in them. I just picked one of these bad boys up myself. They should all have fanless cooling systems as indicated by their website. You are probably just hearing the drive spin.

  • I bought the 750GB version (with FW 400 & eSATA connectors too) back in November, it's a silent and sexy drive, fits nicely on my desk and worked fine until it crapped out on me along with my data after just two months. I don't mean to diss the brand, but it really gave me a poor impression considering I paid a pretty penny for it.

Checking the drivers back then when I installed it, looks like it is a Seagate drive under that hood. I intend to swap the old disk with a WD.

  • Beware if your LaCie Neil Poulton hard disk is silent! The fan could be defective, drives overheats & dies. See vdeo response & read the "more info".

  • are you happy with it?

  • Yes, it's quiet, it looks good, and it haven't made any problems yet...

  • is it really good? im thinking of getting one.

amazon has the 1TB for sale, $114 i think, right now.

just want to know if its alright

  • I would get it...it's a really good offer!

  • just wait ! your windows or apple doesnt reconise that device later that time, i had the same problem to with my maxtor.

backup the files on micro/sd cards and not external drives as maxtor and lacie.

  • Does it have active or passive cooling? And if you put it on your desk can you hear/feel it vibrating?

  • It has no fan, but a good system for protecting the HD from overheating. The Disc is always on my desk, between Imac and wooden surface, and there is no vibration (you can hear a sound like the fan sound of a laptop).

  • Cool, Thanks.

  • are you sure? I have the same (but the 1 TB version) and it has a fan.

  • hmmm...I'm pretty sure...

Maybe it's because you have a bigger one, which needs more cooling ( Or maybe not, and I'm wrong)

At the HP they say: "Intelligentes lüfterloses Kühlsystem" which means: "intelligent cooling system without fan"

    Reply if I'm wrong :-)

  • Which manufacturer makes the hard drive inside this model? I heard bad things from reviews but I also know someone who has a LaCie drive that hasn't failed for a couple of years? I could've gotten this drive for cheap at Futureshop but was hesitant.

  • ecost is sellin these for $149...refurbished of course but still a good deal.

  • Nice, bought one today, really quiet and isn't getting that hot (my iomega pro is getten a lots hotter than this one, although this had esata)

    BTW witch song is this?

  • It's Papa's got a brand new bag, by James Brown.

    Bye Julia

  • Nice video, maybe i' ll change my Porsche with this

  • LOL...;-) More space than a porsche...thats for sure ;-)

  • :D What computer you use with that? I' ve an iMac, i hope that is quiet too

  • An new iMac, use it with Time Machine.

    Bye Julia

  • Glad to see your so happy with it. Sub'd :D

  • Thanks for subscribing!

  • Any reviews?.. Speed good? How Quiet is it?

  • Hi!

Speed is good (in my opinion) I use it for Time Machine, and it's pretty quiet, because of a really intelligent cooling system...PLUS: there are blue lights downside, which looks totally cool...so, I think it's a good choice.

    Bye Julia

  • Thanks for taking the time to reply J.x
