It really is such a shame that these beautiful machines are/were being scrapped. To be honest, I'm 19 years old, and was raised around computers, but I would rather get on the footplate to run or fire one of these beauties. Even though I've only run 1.5" and 2.5" scale locos, I get a sense of gratification for keeping up a good head of steam and keeping the train moving. But thank you for capturing these gems when they were running, I love these videos.
@lennyos Oh yes she has for now at least!! I together with my driver bought her at the end of steam. We let a museum look after her and finally we decided to get her back to Glasgow in Scotland where she was built. However a few enthusiasts in SA decided she was not getting exported from SA and done all they could to stop her being shipped. Now she lays under a layer of dust rusting away and never gets looked at and like so many other once preserved locos in SA will one day be scrapped! Very sad
@LifeofRail I am sorry to hear that your efforts to bring her to Glasgow came to nothing. I kow there is another locomotive in Glasgow from the SAR days and also built in Glasgow.
@shabbypants54 Yes, that 15F in Glasgow was the replacement for my mighty beast. We had to bring something over so we brought a old scrap 15F instead. Every time I walk around that Glasgow Museum and see that loco I get rather annoyed as I know my 3488 should be the loco that is there!!! Instead she lays in ruins covered in dust and birds droppings. Its heartbreaking indeed.
@LifeofRail :-) I can well imagine your annoyance. Any chance that you might be able to resurrect yours and get her here? It is so sad that she moulders away in SA in a state of neglect. I am half South African up in Perth north of Ediburgh. What has happened to Steam in SA now? Last tiem I looked things were unhealthy :-(
A fabulous post. You're one lucky bugger to have not only seen these magnificent machines but to ride them as well. I'd give my right arm (well, almost) to be up close to a 25C or NC with a full head of steam.
Afraid they wont publish it with the music. The music I used was "Madonna", "This use to be my playground". I had it tuned to change with the words etc and the pictures representing the words.
